Eating House 1849 - Kapolei Commons
The Eating House 1849 pays homage to Hawaii’s vibrant culinary heritage, a nod to restaurateurs like Peter Fernandez who, the story goes, opened one of the first restaurants in Hawaii, called the Eating House, back in the mid-1800s, using what was available from local farmers, ranchers, foragers and fishermen.
It’s here that award-winning Chef Roy Yamaguchi blends these two worlds: the easy ambiance and simple flavors of a plantation town with the dynamic modernity of haute cuisine.

Awesome staff n tasty food. I requested a cake with a happy birthday on it. Request granted. This resto is good for birthday n reasonable price. Thanks eating house.
This was a last minute birthday dinner and glad we came. I requested a reservation for a party of 4 at 7:30pm. We arrived early but there were plenty of tables so we were seated early.
Food was good as always and our server was polite. I was upset that no one followed up and sang happy birthday to my daughter. I’m glad I ordered a dessert because they don’t offer a complimentary cake. And if they do I don’t know why she wasn’t offered one even through it’s on the reservation ticket I made.
If you want good food and a place to have a conversation with friends and family come here. If your going to celebrate a special occasion, make sure you let them know. I don’t think they read special request from the tickets on open table.
Great food and drink, variety, service and atmosphere. Frank is doing a fantastic job managing the greeters and servers.
Service was excellent, waitress served both our kids starter quesadillas and desert from the kids menu even though we did not order from the kids menu. Portions were generous and well made. We had the ramen, catch of the day mahi-mahi and the mixed grill. We sat outdoors on the patio and the ambience and noise level were perfect. Only criticism I have was the menu items and prices seem all over the place.
We had dinner on New Years Eve it was comfortable, excellent dinner entrees, great live music and superb waiter service
The calamari was greasy and far from crispy, when waitress came over to ask how it was, I let her know it was greasy which I gat a disinterested stare
The porterhouse was raw not rare and it was difficult to cut partly because of inadequate knives and steak was grissly
Better ways to spend hard earned money
Always have an amazing experience and the food is great!
The Ahi was awesome, as was the Tomato soup! Service was efficient!
Always a great choice! Special flavors and unique dishes.
Excellent food and excellent service. We love this place! Kudos to Roy!
It was awesome!
Undercooked and over cooked steaks.
Heavy handed seasoning the salad with salt.
No seasoning on the steaks.
Disappointing and a bad use of Roy’s name.
Save your money and don’t visit this restaurant.
Open Air next to the Theaters so you can only expect so much. Pricey food for a shorts and t shirt place ( did follow the recommendations of business casual). However, they did have openings for a last minute dinner which is why I went there and shouldn't grumble too much. Noise level was mild consider the location. Portion size wasn't too large but they gave a lot of rice so I was full. Beer selection is good.
I did say it was our Anniversary ( our 23rd Wedding) it was not acknowledged also, presented our movie stub for a free Chefs appetizer-it never came?!
The food was very overpriced and terrible quality. I wouldn’t recommend this if the meals cost $10, yet they cost $40. I got the tuna dip and mahi mahi which was steamed and had an undercooked savory pancake on top. Would strongly recommend spending the extra $10 a person and going to Roy’s.
The foods were a little bit too salty for us.
I have eaten lunch at this location but this was my first happy hour/dinner experience. It was very reasonable & tasty. Andrea was FABULOUS!
Great food, great service. Sunday prime rib special was so worth it!
We absolutely love Eating House! We have been to the location on Kauai, the one on Oahu in the international market place and the one in Kapolei. Each location has a slightly different menu but some things are the same. The food and drinks are always delicious! Definitely a great place for Date Night!
The overall experience was great! The food was tasty and the service was fast and friendly. Never been here before and would go back again...
I brought my Ohana that came from Maui, and Hawai’i Kai. They just enjoyed the atmosphere, the tasty delicious food, the alcohol beverage and mostly our server Rachel, as always, she gives 110% service. I liked the fact that the other servers cared and made sure our water was full, asked if everything was okay.
Thank you so much for making it a memorable evening for them.
The selection of food items and drinks in the menu are very limited and pricy. There were no salt and pepper shakers on the tables to begin with. I had to ask for them. It shows the arrogance of the staff and chef. That arrogance, however was not proven to be founded by the food that was delivered to the table.
The food was fantastic!!
Went during restaurant week and they had a very good deal. It was a three course meal for about $38 (sorry, can't remember exact amount). I got the brussel sprouts and cauliflower for the starter, the meatloaf as an entrée and it came with three small desserts. The brussel sprouts and cauliflower was okay but the balsamic vinegar wasn't a great fit and it overwhelmed the dish. The meatloaf was made with local beef, portuguese sausage, and wild boar with something similar to a demi glace sauce that sounded great, but didn't have a lot of flavor. I liked the mashed potatoes that came with it, but not the root vegetables that also accompanied the dish. The desserts were the best thing with small portions of chocolate cake, cheesecake and raspberry sorbet. The servers were friendly and attentive. Initially my water tasted horrible which I think was caused by a badly cleaned glass. It was quickly replaced and the replacement was fine. The one thing that put a damper on the whole meal was having to shoo away the flies all the time. Overall, not a great experience.
Food was good but service need much improvement. We had to wait 10 minutes by the empty receptionist station before getting seated. Then another 8 minutes wait before our server showed her face. But the restaurant was only 70% full !
This restaurant is indeed lack of good management .
pupus were good. dinner was alright but not worth the price. It can get loud when the restaurant is half full. My steak was not medium rare as ordered it. It was more like medium plus. So I Pointed it out to the server and they took it back. They come back to the table with a steak and after a quick glance, I asked is this a whole new steak? Their response was yes. 🤦🏻♀️ well it turned out that it was the same EXACT steak that they took back. I know this because I cut the corner. So they basically took my over cooked steak, to cook it even more 🥴 Why? I have no clue!! Mind you, by the time the same steak came back to the table almost well done, my company was already done with their meals. It didn’t make sense to have them cook a whole new steak just the way I ordered it to eat alone, so I just ended up not re ordering another steak. Although they were apologetic, Im sadden to say, i would most likely NOT go back. that is the reason for a 3 star rating.
The restaurant was in the right place, easy to find. The food was excellent and the serving portion were generous. The service was friendly and helpful. Recommend to friends.
Went for prime rib night. Asked for medium rare, but was rare - sent back to kitchen. Prime rib was tough and chewy - very disappointed.
We went here for our 3-year anniversary. We came here last year for our 2-year and they gave us a free desert with a “happy anniversary” written on it when we indicated that was the special event on our OpenTable reservation. It was my favorite part of last year’s anniversary dinner. A little disappointed we didn’t get that this year, but everything was good regardless. :)
My husband really enjoyed the whole fried fish with papaya salad. I had Caesar salad with added blackened ahi but the upcharge for the ahi was excessive and the salad needed more dressing. Overall though we enjoyed our meal and will return.
We really enjoyed EH1849 in the past but the food was just not the same as before. My poke salad & the chicken sandwich both needed more flavor. We were there for lunch so I don't know if dinner is any different, but we probably wouldn't return.
Very high ceilings made the venue noisy. The food was great. We thought he paella was top notch!
Had lunch with a good friend right when they opened. We were asked if we wanted to be seated indoors or out in the patio. Chose to sit in the patio - had a nice breeze and not noisy even though it was next to the theatre and other restaurants. It wasn’t a busy day for a Saturday.
Enjoyed the food and appetizers. We had the ramen and the hamachi. Appetizer on the House was surprisingly edamame! We chose to order the Brussels sprouts. Yum! Our waitress, Jamie was super nice, knowledgeable of the menu, and kept making sure we were doing alright.
Will would love to come for dinner next time!
We celebrated our anniversary here. Everything was superb!
Paella was different from traditional style, but so ONO!
Malasada dessert was delish, and so moist and sugary cinnamon’y sweet.
Prime rib was seasoned to perfection, and the buttery mashed potatoes went so well with it.
Who knew they served banana bread beer?! Washed everything down nicely.
My wife and I had dinner at the Eating House on a Wednesday night. To our surprise they offered 25% off bottles of wine. They also had three wine specials that were not described in detail. So we asked our server about the wines, but all she knew was that two are red wines and one is a white wine. She had to ask somebody else to find out which one was the white wine. That was not very impressive.
Beyond that the food was very good (Brussels sprout and cauliflower appetizer, catch of the day and the whole fish, lumpia with ice cream) and also the bottle of wine (Sauvignon Blanc) we ordered.
We had an outside table which is not really outside. The location is next to the entrance to the movie theater (not great).
For the food we would come back. For the ambiance not so much.
While the service was good, the food was pretty bland. I wouldn’t eat here again. But, the ambiance was cool and there was live music. The bar was small, but maybe a good place for drinks on the weekend?
The food, drinks, and service were amazing! The cost of food is high but definitely worth the quality. Great for special occasion or a special date.
The food was good and it was cooked just right. Good cocktails, too.
We ordered the Ahi tuna dinner rare with mashed potatoes instead of the soba noodles. This dish was outstanding! Very flavorful and the fish fresh and perfectly "not cooked". My wife had the Plantation Paella and the flavors were amazing... lots of chicken, Spanish sausage, and the clams and shrimp were excellent. We were both very pleased with the food and our server Jordan.
