Eating House 1849 - Kapolei Commons
The Eating House 1849 pays homage to Hawaii’s vibrant culinary heritage, a nod to restaurateurs like Peter Fernandez who, the story goes, opened one of the first restaurants in Hawaii, called the Eating House, back in the mid-1800s, using what was available from local farmers, ranchers, foragers and fishermen.
It’s here that award-winning Chef Roy Yamaguchi blends these two worlds: the easy ambiance and simple flavors of a plantation town with the dynamic modernity of haute cuisine.

Yes, I would recommend Eating House 1849. Food is very good and aside from a maitre ‘d who seemed to be dazed and very confused, the experience was good. There really isn’t much in the way of ambiance, especially the outside area that overlooks a parking lot and a cineplex. They have a good wine list which was fairly reasonably priced compared to other restaurants. Apps and desserts are interesting and yummy.
Dope brah so goob. #goobfoob
Great service even though we were there towards the end of the night on Valentines Day and they were crazy busy
had a 7:30pm dinner reservation and were seated quickly inside the restaurant. Emily was our server and took our orders and gave her recommendations efficiently. Water and Wine served quickly.
Our appetizers, Brussels sprouts and Cauliflower, and the calamari came out quickly and were tasty and delicious.
Caesar Salad lacked flavor and watery.
My steak was brought in medium and my wife's steak was medium with a piece of USDA PLASTIC attached to it. Needless to say wifey was not happy and did not want to order anything else from there. She was horrified a piece of plastic was not seen from the person on the grill.
Despite the manager's offer to order something else and an offer for complimentary dessert. My wife simply wanted to go home. They ended up taking both steaks off the bill but our valentines dinner was already ruined.
At least I can say I’ve tried it however I will not go again. The food was not worth the price.
Our waitress is vey Friendly, always smiling and she kept on checking on us on how we are doing and how’s the food. Pleasant place.
I would recommend Eating House to a friend for its convenience if you're in the area. Not the best reason but here's why, and maybe being Valentines Day is the reason or excuse why depending. They were very busy, seating was very quick and pleasant. Busser brought water but it was a while before the server reached the table. There was a long wait after ordering and runners bring out the food but server didn't come back until main course was brought out to ask if everything was ok. She only touched our table once before asking if we wanted to order desert. I give that busser an A+ as he was bussing tables and still kept our water glasses full. Please promote him to server! Food was okay but a little bland. I had the steamed Opah. Broth was a bit salty and vegetables were a bit under cooked but I love Opah however this chunk was a little tough. The dining area was very noisy. Couldn't hear the music over the bar. The manager should have been touching tables instead of folding cutlery. 4-6 empty tables took over 15 minutes to reset. As a former restaurant manager, that's way too long when you have a line of people by the door. Too many are standing by the line (view via large glass windows) when they could be assisting in resetting the dining area. Given it was Valentines Day, I understand the rush however I would recommend a better pre service game plan and more focus on "Team". Manager (QB), should be touching more tables and making sure that guests are focused upon. Here's the deal, I love Eating House and everything that this restaurant represents. This review is not to grumble but rather to inform you from experienced eyes that these are visible areas and quick fixes that will go a long way. I will definitely be back! I live in Kapolei and I am cheering you guys on for long term success. Tough Love Baby! … Aloha!
Awesome place to eat. Service was really good.
This place is fair. It is a cross between a bar and an upscale restaurant. It is open to the outdoors which isn’t always great when the weather sucks. The food was fine, the menu is lacking, and the service leaves more to be desired. It is a change of pace, but not a restaurant that will become your favorite place to dine.
We had our Valentine's dinner out at the "Eating House 1849" by Roy Yamaguchi. The restaurant is at Kapolei Commons. It is near the shopping center where Target, Ross's, and TJ Max can be found.
We had reservations for 6:15 but got there early. The hostess and manager greeted us and took us to our table. The hostess provided us with the menus and specials. We ordered the Hamachi appetizer, for dinner, the Porterhouse and King crab for dinner and for dessert .... lumpia with ice cream. The food tasted great and we were full. Lindsey, our server and others made sure our glasses were filled and our table cleared for our next dish. The restaurant manager also came by to see how we were doing. There was also live music going on. The place was very busy too.
We had a great experience here at the "Eating House 1849" in Kapolei. We would come back to this restaurant for another meal. I would recommend it to my family and friends as well.
Excellent meal - excellent service by Dayna and Ethan. We have no hesitation bringing our out of town guests there. Exceptional quality of food and service!
We tried this restaurant when they first open and we weren't that impressed. We decided to give them another try and ordered a Porterhouse steak. Husband is very picky with food and sure enough it wasn't cooked as ordered. The saving grace was the outstanding service and they were able to fix the mistake and re make the steak for us. Second time it was perfect. Wine promotion is something that will bring me back.
Food was excellent and service was exceptional. One of our desserts took a little longer than anticipated, so the chef was nice enough to bring out a third dessert that was from the evening menu. He did not have to, but it was fabulous and the ladies and I hope to come back some evening to try out the evening menu! Thank you so very much!
Actually, the food was very tasty, but remarkably, the mixed grill was served refrjicold - not cool fro being left on counter before being served, butRefrigerator cold. Not sure how the chef managed that, but the manager had no explanation. The waiter did t come around soon enough to inquire or correct the situation. Two of us ordered the same meal and both were refrigerator COLD. I am sure the manager spoke to chef after but she never reported back to us. It was an unbelievable experience. The chef should be embarrassed
My family had a great experience with Emily our waitress. Food was Great tried loved the Blackened Ahi & Bone in Ribeye.
Awesome staff n tasty food. I requested a cake with a happy birthday on it. Request granted. This resto is good for birthday n reasonable price. Thanks eating house.
This was a last minute birthday dinner and glad we came. I requested a reservation for a party of 4 at 7:30pm. We arrived early but there were plenty of tables so we were seated early.
Food was good as always and our server was polite. I was upset that no one followed up and sang happy birthday to my daughter. I’m glad I ordered a dessert because they don’t offer a complimentary cake. And if they do I don’t know why she wasn’t offered one even through it’s on the reservation ticket I made.
If you want good food and a place to have a conversation with friends and family come here. If your going to celebrate a special occasion, make sure you let them know. I don’t think they read special request from the tickets on open table.
Great food and drink, variety, service and atmosphere. Frank is doing a fantastic job managing the greeters and servers.
Service was excellent, waitress served both our kids starter quesadillas and desert from the kids menu even though we did not order from the kids menu. Portions were generous and well made. We had the ramen, catch of the day mahi-mahi and the mixed grill. We sat outdoors on the patio and the ambience and noise level were perfect. Only criticism I have was the menu items and prices seem all over the place.
We had dinner on New Years Eve it was comfortable, excellent dinner entrees, great live music and superb waiter service
The calamari was greasy and far from crispy, when waitress came over to ask how it was, I let her know it was greasy which I gat a disinterested stare
The porterhouse was raw not rare and it was difficult to cut partly because of inadequate knives and steak was grissly
Better ways to spend hard earned money
Always have an amazing experience and the food is great!
The Ahi was awesome, as was the Tomato soup! Service was efficient!
Always a great choice! Special flavors and unique dishes.
Excellent food and excellent service. We love this place! Kudos to Roy!
It was awesome!
Undercooked and over cooked steaks.
Heavy handed seasoning the salad with salt.
No seasoning on the steaks.
Disappointing and a bad use of Roy’s name.
Save your money and don’t visit this restaurant.
Open Air next to the Theaters so you can only expect so much. Pricey food for a shorts and t shirt place ( did follow the recommendations of business casual). However, they did have openings for a last minute dinner which is why I went there and shouldn't grumble too much. Noise level was mild consider the location. Portion size wasn't too large but they gave a lot of rice so I was full. Beer selection is good.
I did say it was our Anniversary ( our 23rd Wedding) it was not acknowledged also, presented our movie stub for a free Chefs appetizer-it never came?!
The food was very overpriced and terrible quality. I wouldn’t recommend this if the meals cost $10, yet they cost $40. I got the tuna dip and mahi mahi which was steamed and had an undercooked savory pancake on top. Would strongly recommend spending the extra $10 a person and going to Roy’s.
The foods were a little bit too salty for us.
I have eaten lunch at this location but this was my first happy hour/dinner experience. It was very reasonable & tasty. Andrea was FABULOUS!
Great food, great service. Sunday prime rib special was so worth it!
We absolutely love Eating House! We have been to the location on Kauai, the one on Oahu in the international market place and the one in Kapolei. Each location has a slightly different menu but some things are the same. The food and drinks are always delicious! Definitely a great place for Date Night!
The overall experience was great! The food was tasty and the service was fast and friendly. Never been here before and would go back again...
I brought my Ohana that came from Maui, and Hawai’i Kai. They just enjoyed the atmosphere, the tasty delicious food, the alcohol beverage and mostly our server Rachel, as always, she gives 110% service. I liked the fact that the other servers cared and made sure our water was full, asked if everything was okay.
Thank you so much for making it a memorable evening for them.
The selection of food items and drinks in the menu are very limited and pricy. There were no salt and pepper shakers on the tables to begin with. I had to ask for them. It shows the arrogance of the staff and chef. That arrogance, however was not proven to be founded by the food that was delivered to the table.
The food was fantastic!!
Went during restaurant week and they had a very good deal. It was a three course meal for about $38 (sorry, can't remember exact amount). I got the brussel sprouts and cauliflower for the starter, the meatloaf as an entrée and it came with three small desserts. The brussel sprouts and cauliflower was okay but the balsamic vinegar wasn't a great fit and it overwhelmed the dish. The meatloaf was made with local beef, portuguese sausage, and wild boar with something similar to a demi glace sauce that sounded great, but didn't have a lot of flavor. I liked the mashed potatoes that came with it, but not the root vegetables that also accompanied the dish. The desserts were the best thing with small portions of chocolate cake, cheesecake and raspberry sorbet. The servers were friendly and attentive. Initially my water tasted horrible which I think was caused by a badly cleaned glass. It was quickly replaced and the replacement was fine. The one thing that put a damper on the whole meal was having to shoo away the flies all the time. Overall, not a great experience.
Food was good but service need much improvement. We had to wait 10 minutes by the empty receptionist station before getting seated. Then another 8 minutes wait before our server showed her face. But the restaurant was only 70% full !
This restaurant is indeed lack of good management .
