East is East Chai Lounge - Main Street
As evening descends upon the vibrant city of Vancouver, Chai Lounge comes to life like the courts of the eastern Raja's. Imagine a warm, dreamy and visually arresting venue where global sounds cascade the room over the din of lively conversations. Spicy scents waft from the kitchen followed by an abundance of delicious trans-himalayan cuisine.
Chai Lounge is our landmark location. There is no place like it in Vancouver, and visitors from near and far marvel at the ornate carpets, ceiling mandala's, and the nature-inspired furnishings.
The large central stage features a rotating line-up of world class musicians and dancers. We ask for a small patronage fee of $3 per person which goes to support all the live local music at East is East. Because we are very busy we hold tables for 2 hours. We look forward to serving you.
We really enjoyed great customer service and beautiful music. :)
1st time and it exceeded expectations. Food was excellent and really enjoyed the live music. They seemed to be doing a great job of COVID social distancing and cleaning between guests.
East is East is consistently delicious, the atmosphere and service is always welcoming. Great place.
The food at East is East is amazing and we always love enjoying the Chai Feast. However, the service leaves something to be desired. We arrived for our 6.15pm reservation time, no one acknowledged us for about 5-10 minutes, it then took another 10 minutes to be sat. I asked to clarify if our 90 minute dining slot would be extended as it took 15-20 minutes to be sat which was agreed.
We had three kids with us and sat there for another 30 minutes with no one coming over to take our orders, bring us drinks etc. When we finally got someone's attention, she was super gracious and took us over even though we weren't in her section. She immediately got our orders in & the kids meals came out quick - even quicker than the drinks.
However, since we weren't in her section, we weren't seen all the time. Dirty plates/dishes stacked up, water wasn't ever filled up, drinks weren't replenished. etc.
It took ages for our second round of Chai Feast to come out, which by then took us to our 90 minute window and we had to get our desserts to go.
I love love love the food, music, and people but would suggest keeping slower service in mind when visiting.
In general, I like pretty much everything about this restaurant. Just one suggestion would be the following: Both live and ambient music are fine but it would be interesting to actually listen to music that is related to the restaurant's culture.
The food was delicious, as always. The server was helpful and friendly. All in all, a great experience.
While we understand restaurants are struggling during Covid, the value here is just not here any longer. They removed tabbouleh salad, replacing it with an ordinary green salad (with a 'persian' dressing). The servings are miniscule but prices higher. We froze throughout our dinner as there was no heat turned on, and despite asking to move, was seated by the door creating a cold draft. We found it quite dark, and our table candle snuffed out minutes after being seated, with no one bothering to relight it. I made several efforts to flag someone down to get a knife. The entertainment, flamenco dancers, were so loud that conversation was impossible.
A nice treat.
Beautiful interior designing. Dim lights makes the restaurant feel cozy. The food was delicious and the servers were respectful and kind. The musicians were pleasing to listen to as we ate. I recommend this restaurant who would like to try a Indian-Afghan fusion.
Really excellent. I would recommend the Chai Feast. Very delicate flavours!
Live music was sensational! Welcoming, beautiful atmosphere. The food is spectacular
Having dinner at East is East is the closest thing to travelling abroad! Although I miss the live music and lively buzz in a cozy restaurant full of people, the fabulous food and special atmosphere makes me remember what travelling is like and eating as a cultural experience.
Place and feed are very good. My only recommendation would be to upgrade/renovate the place because it seems a bit outdated already.
Our server was rude in the way she spoke to us! She was not attentive and our food took too long to come. We waited over an hour for our food.
Wonderful ambience, great service, fantastic food, and enjoyable live music.
Always a great place to come with friends.
Good food, pricey but tasty. Very quite with mixed music. Lots of space at lunch time.
So good! Amazing food, great show! Love it here. Its my comfort food.
My absolute favorite part of East is East is their service. Friendly and patient. They give out a vibe that is quite nice. Loved the food as well, excellent choices.
East is East has amazing food and a great dining experience. I would recommend it to everyone, especially the Chai Feast.
As you enter the excellent service is apparent and the ambiance inviting. The offering of a taster of chai is a perfect start to the experience. The menu offers variety and very reasonable pricing. That along with live entertainment transports you to another land far,far away. Highly recommend.
East is East has a beautiful ambiance to enjoy delcious food in & the service is excellent!
Great place as usual- my go to place! Its warm and great food!
The ambience was great. Cozy and plays well with the food. Ordered the Persian's Favorite and lamb was delicious and went well with the lentil soup and a good portion of salad. It was just the right portion for lunch. Can't wait to try the rest of their menu. Definitely will return. Thank you.
For a restaurant with great reviews, has lousy service considering not busy, and not fresh food. I had the GHANDARA BLUES rothi and the rice was hard!! Not impressed over
Great! Love the food and the atmosphere. We will definitely go there again.
Love the chai tasting menu. Delicious flavours, amazing variety. Waiter was excellent. Cellist providing live entertainment was great.
The waitress took off my glass of wine before I finished my wine and I couldn't say anything. And after finish my food she took a long time to take the dishes off. She was super quick to take off my glass of wine but not my empty dish.
Great atmosphere and excellent service
Excellent food. Excellent service. Terrible chairs. Small and spindly.
Found the food to be have a lot of different flavours which was great.
Live music was a big bonus as well!
Love the cozy ambiance, with its rustic, yet interesting eastern feel. The food is well cooked with quality ingredients, but spicing is subtle when compared with the typical Indian restaurant in Vancouver. The presentation is also interesting and thoughtful. This allows one to experience the wonderful flavours minus the typical assault on one's tastebuds, not to mention palate. I love the gluten free options for the flatbreads used in their wraps. There are great options for vegetarians and vegans too. Their gulab jamun dessert is the best I've had in Vancouver. My wife and I always get the feeling of being satisfied with our meals there.
We love the variety of the feast that we ordered. Also, enjoy the live music and the interior design of the restaurant.
What a good place to have a happy Friday. I would highly recommend anyone to go.
This is one of our favorite places in town. They have excellent food, whether you a vegetarian or not, you have an abundance of choices and will have a hard time choosing every time you visit.
Beautiful live music, incredible decor, kind servers wearing masks, the chai feast is excellent value and all you can eat 👌🏻
The only thing I didn't like was the auto gratuity for musicians. I appreciate that they want to support the local arts, but we weren't informed prior to receiving our bill. By that point, it's pretty awkward. I really feel they should ask BEFORE bringing us the bill.
Normally that is something that the restaurant takes care of but they've more or less passed it to the patrons. We covered it because we want to support local businesses especially during this time with Covid, however, what it forces us to do tho, is recalculate the tip, which is unfortunate for the server. We go because we really like the food and service, but this is auto-charge is a damper.
Great place and food to enjoy music and shows with friends! Staff is amazing. They changed my seat to the front when it becomes available as promised.
Love it here! The food is amazing and the live music is so fun. The only thing that I didn't like was that you can' only stay for an Hour and a half. It feels a-bit rushed
Great food and live music, could improve on their service!
When the woman from East is East called me to notify me of the charge for live music, she asked if there was a celebration for my party, and when I told her we were celebrating a 50th birthday she said they would send over a dessert- but this never happened. I was a bit disappointed, but felt embarrassed to "ask" for this from the waitress, assuming it would come but it didn't.
They increased the prices a lot
Chicken rice and a glass of wine 45 per person is quiet a bit
Music was great and staff is outstanding
