Very friendly staff, delicious cocktails.
The service was perfect - helpful and knowledgeable but without hovering. The food surpassed my expectation. Felt like fine dining in a cozy casual spot!
Great food, drinks and service I’ll go again for sure
Super hip spot in the Rockridge district of Oakland. The service was excellent and the menu items were a very modern, almost fusion American. The cocktails were fantastic as well.
Great spot for a nice date if you want to impress.
Delicious high quality expertly prepared original menu. The wait staff was very attentive.
Will return. Highly recommended.
The food was imaginative and delicious. We especially loved the hamachi appetizer with duck and mostarda. All our dishes were excellent. Service was friendly and professional, and the room is cozy. We will be back.
Pleasant neighborhood restaurant. - very good hamburger and delicious brussel sprouts. My husband was disappointed as out of many beers that were on the menu. I would go again to try some of the other interesting items that were on the menu.
Beautiful restaurant and great food and unusual menu. All fittings were custom made in a pseudo arts and crafts style, as their logo suggests. Their burger is a specialty but they make a limited amount and they had none left when we got there at 8.30. Many tables back up to the bar and are constantly bumped. Entree could have been warmer.
I really enjoyed our brunch here at Duchess. The fried chicken sandwich, biscuits and gravy and the Bloody Mary were all amazing. Our server was really friendly and attentive. I would highly recommend and will go back!
GOOD STUFF ALL AROUND FOOD WAS A DELIGHT COCKTAILS AT 10:30 AM MADE IT!
Ambiance and service was great here. Cocktails we had were both WAY too sweet.
The food was extremely tasty, although also on the sweet side. However, the portion sizes turned us off, as they were small and lacking the feeling of a complete meal. None of the entrees listed a vegetable on the menu, and when we asked the server, they mentioned that they all had some kind of vegetable puree, like parsnip or squash. The entrees showed up with a smear of puree, really more of a sauce then a "vegetable" portion. While the meat amount was on the small side, it would have been sufficient if it was accompanied by some additional items. What turned us off, was rather the lack of anything accompanying it that made the meal feel incomplete.
In addition, the plating of the meal felt dated — a la 1990's — a sauce smear here, an oil drizzle there, and then a cascade of edible flowers covering the beautiful food. Trying a bit too hard, and it garnered a little chuckle, as we undressed our food of it's flowers.
If you go here, the burger was actually a normal sized burger. That's seemed like the thing to get, as we watched the tables around us eating theirs while we ate our 6 bites of meat sitting lonely on a mostly empty plate.
THE MENU ON LINE WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE ACTUAL MENU , SO WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED. SATURDAY BRUNCH SHOULD HAVE A FEW MORE ITEMS.
Had high hopes. Good Old Fashion cocktails and enjoyed the appetizers. Main meal was fair at best. We both had the Opah - both portions were sinewy and lacked flavor. Way too much use of candied cashews. We had the pumpkin dessert - a weird spice/marmalade was in the middle that was extremely bitter. Would not return.
Excellent service food and drinks
There were 4 of us for dinner and we were able to try a good portion of the menu. Loved the hamachi appetizer and the trout entree. The food was well executed and had unique flavors. Cocktails were delicious. Will definitely be back to eat, and even just for drinks upstairs.
I judge a restaurant by excellent dishes I couldn’t make myself at home and that’s exactly what happened. Truly a taste treat !
I had a 6:45 pm dinner reservation and they had already run out of their burgers. Second time this has happened. They also ran out of bread.
Duchess has delicious cocktails and great food. Especially perfect for a special occasion.
The food was terrific, especially the fried chicken and the soba noodles. So was the service, especially our server, Gloria. But the restaurant was way too loud.
Your loudest sound rating should not be called “energetic.” That makes a negative seem like a positive. It was way too loud and, at times, hard to hear each other,
I had the most amazing corn beef hash. Will be going back just for that!
One of the best drinks I have ever had. We liked the chicken plate so much, we ordered it 3 times. Everything else was great and the presentation was impeccable. Wish I didn’t live an hour away.
Have been here for both brunch and dinner. Enjoyed the brunch more than dinner as I ended up with a stomachache after the latter (possibly nothing to do with the quality of their food). Great cocktails and small but excellent brunch menu with more than one veggie based selection which is always a plus in my book. Loved the seasonal roasted veggies and the smoked trout persimmon sandwich. Small place so wouldn't recommend for groups of more than 4. Overall great addition to the Rockridge neighborhood.
We live in the neighborhood and really loved it when it opened but it has changed in so many ways since then that it is no longer a place that we would go to on a regular basis. Its chefs, hours, menus and vision seem to have fluctuated and it has become a very hipster place with very small portions on the large plates and very inconsistent cooking. We keep wanting it to return to its original unpretentious and delicious food that appeals to a large audience.
Wow, what a gem of a place this is, so glad I found it! The service was out of this world, the cocktails were not only beautiful, but unique in flavor and very tasty. But the food, oh my, the food was just amazing. The presentation was gorgeous, the flavors were out of this world, and everything was so so tasty! My friends and I couldn't stop eating! It was like being in a super cozy, living room with really nice people all around! Highly recommend it!
Really delicious cocktails and great service. The aesthetic of the restaurant was also really cool. It was a little overpriced but overall great for a special occasion or celebration. I am vegan and there were plenty of options for me.
Good food and very well meaning staff. It the service was so disorganized with each krder taking forever, getting forgotten and then being asked by anothwr person for the order we've been waiting for.even my reservationwaschecked kff, or our table reserved, so that I got a message from open table asking why I didn't show. And then the bill was huge. Very pretty decor. With some tweaks, maybe the good food and ambiance would get more attention than the high price and frustrating service.
We could not recommend this fantastic place any higher. Incredibly delicious food, great service and beautiful ambience.
First visit, and overall we were very happy. I took a rare splurge leap on the grilled Albacore tuna with coriander, crispy rice cake, mussel broth, and cherry tomato ragu. First thought was, "Wow, expensive and small portion" (I'm not a dedicated foodie) but in fact it was delicious, substantial and filling. The presentation in a large bowl also makes it look smaller. Perfectly done and I'd consider splurging again for the same dish, but want to try the rest of the menu! Friend had the Soba noodle dish and found it delicious. Love the imaginative, breezy cocktails too. We'll be back!
Innovative dishes. Friendly staff with interesting cocktail ideas, stylish vibe and perfectly cooked meal (ocean trout). Can’t wait to return!
Wonderful cocktail selection interesting food combinations and beautiful presentation.
Great neighborhood restaurant. Small intimate casual with excellent cocktails and creative dishes.
The new chef has upped the ante at this cute restaurant. Everything we tried was delicious. Definitely worth a visit.
Friendly and attentive staff but food was sadly, underwhelming.
Would not know how to braise to save their lives.
During my first visit to duchess I ordered the duck - it was absolutely delicious. The ambiance is lovely and the restaurant is quiet so you can have intimate conversations. A great combination of great food and lovely surroundings.
The food was good but the portions too small. The granola with the duck was bizarre at best!
Everything was over priced
We loved absolutely everything about our experience. The burger was the best I've ever had, the servers were great, and my husband loved his cocktails and dinner.
New Oakland venue with creative cuisine, good cocktails and nice staff
