Dovetail Ratings and Reviews
We checked out six restaurants during Restaurant Week, all of which had a Zagat's food rating of 25 or higher. Dovetail was the best of the six. We have already recommended it to friends and family and will return again soon. The veal was the best we have had anywhere.
The meal was stellar. We came for restaurant week and were very impressed with the offerings and as always with the caliber of the food. The wine special was an added gift. It was delicious and complimented the meal. We are starstruck by every meal we have had at Dovetail but this one was phenomena; because for such a reasonable price we got a memorable meal with the best service ever.
Have been here twice, both very good experiences. The avocado appetizer is simply to die for and so is the foie gras. I'll be back simply for those! Home made corn bread instead of standard bread is sinful. I found the pork entree to be a bit bland, but the duck was very good. Service is outstanding. Nice atmosphere. Recommended!
The service was a little sloppy and waiters were not well coordinated. One waiter would put utensils down and then another would changed them - this happened twice. The lamb dish I had was good but had no color - just some hard peas. Overall its a nice place but not worth the hype.
Dovetail never disappoints. They combine amazing food with just the right portion size to ensure a satisfying tasting that won't make you full and uncomfortable. Another notable feature is the impeccable service. I would not hesitate to bring my parents to Dovetail for a special occasion during which we wanted to be pampered.
Dovetail has never disappointed us. We took out-of-town friends to dinner there
on Sunday when they offer a prix-fixed dinner (Sunday Suppa). This comes with three courses,
many selections in each, and it's all delicious. Topping it all off was
excellent service -- attentive and friendly without being stuffy or intrusive.
Food was good, but not good enough to justify the ridiculous prices. From a $65 tasting menu, I expect food that is transformative, that combines different flavors and textures in a new way and shows me something new about what food can be. But nothing was really that impressive. And while most dishes were at least solidly prepared, the "white gazpacho" suffered from too much vinegar - inexcusable.
The single item I'd love to eat again was the dessert - a concoction of Irish cream, ice cream, crumbled cookies, and mocha cream. Sounds heavy and way too sweet, but it tasted much lighter and was just sweet enough. The flavors were perfectly balanced. A knock-out!
In short, my advice is to skip dinner here, but come by for coffee and dess
Dining at Dovetail is ALWAYS excellent: the staff are courteous and attentive with a perfect rhythm of timing / the setting is elegant, sophisticated and understated / the menu ALWAYS entices: a gem of well designed culinary creations that please the eye and wow the palate / Dovetail delights with its seasonal signature cocktails offering playful and creative mixes - my most recent the monk's sour's featuring yuzu really tickled my taste buds and opened my appetite for the wonderful dining experience unfolding / additionally the extra delicacies presented at the start and completion of the meal are inventive and always delectable and appreciated. Dovetail consistently pleases with its exceptional dining experience
Dovetail has been delicious the 3 times that I have visited. My husband and I went with some friends for restaurant week and had 3 courses for $35. What a bargain. We also had the wine special which was a small carafe for $25. The wine was also a winner. My only complaint about Dovetail is the "buttoned-up service". I personally do not take offense to it, but I can see how some people would. We visited last year for my husband's birthday and although we had a higher tab, service that evening was similar. It was prompt and tight, but not friendly. I have been to other comparable restaurants in the the city that offer a "down to earth" approach toward guests, and I think that Dovetail would be better served with less attitude and more
Dovetail is an excellent restaurant. I have been there a number of times and the food is always carefully prepared. I will return. This time the service was a bit below the level other occasions. The waiter was pushy and the service was not quite at the level of other visits.
I attended Dovetail for restaurant week because I have passed by this beautiful restaurant many times & the normal menu is very pricey. My group was pleasantly surprised to receive complementary corn bread, amuse bouche & cookies for dessert! My friend asked for a substitution on the restaurant week menu & they accommodated it - a true sign of a classy restaurant. Most restaurants are snobby & don't take adjustments to "cheap" restaurant week menus. The food itself was very pretty & quite tasty, not the best meal I ever had because of the limited menu, but you could tell the ingredients were quality & the chef talented. I probably won't go back just because of the expensive nature but if you don't mind the prices, a definite must try!
Was disappointed by the quality of food for Restaurant week. The hake was very bland and boring and the squid salad was overly complicated with the cantaloupe slices. I wanted to be excited by the food so I could come back and enjoy a full meal at full price! The half carafe of wine for $25 was overpriced and uninteresting. I was so excited to go; I'm disappointed that I'm disappointed...! However, the atmosphere and service were lovely.
Great food, attentive service. Dovetail has a way of presenting simple yet elegant food with fine but not overwhelming flavors. Everything had a subtle depth to it that created a really amazing overall dish that never seemed too fancy or trendy. This seems hard to do when the dishes use somewhat nontraditional ingredients and flavor combination that a non-foodie diner might be scared of, but it was amazing.
The background noise was a little overwhelming though, especially since I was with an elderly woman who couldn't hear anything we were saying. But then again, maybe I shouldn't be hanging out with octagenarians who can hold thier liquor better than I c
Appreciate that Restaurant Week choices were characteristic of typical menu. Squid salad and the gnocchi were each memorable. Fish, chicken and desserts were delicious. Compared to Restaurant Week visits to other restaurants, Dovetail excelled in choices offered, food quality, and service.
