Dovetail Ratings and Reviews
The food is just not there for me. My meal was ok at best. I love the service and romance, and it is very close to our apartment, but the best part is the canapes and bread and wine. My appetizer and entree were barely warm and just not very tasty which breaks my heart to say. I'd have a hard time spending this much there again.
Wow, we haven't been back in 3-4 years but glad to have had the strong instinct and unconscious lure to return . Love the new decor , Love Love Love . Food and Service had always been exceptional from day 1 and earlier days where John Fraser would come out of the kitchen and chat with us , but we never loved decor until now 😜That's a big part of doing a tasting menu or prefix where you want to be comfortable for a decent period of time and now you can. Be sure you will . Fav dishes would include amuse bouche, tuna app with marcona almonds, Summer squash with truffle , Lobster with corn , Rib Eye short rib Incredible.
This is our favorite west side restaurant, and very high on any list of the best in all of NYC. Venue is beautiful, spacious, roomy. Food is creative and enough options to please the pickiest taste. Service is impeccable. Well worth the price. Sunday's prix fixe is imaginative and delicious. Dovetail remains our "go to" place for special occasions.
I was frankly unhappy with this restaurant. I thought it was wildly expensive for the quality and quantity of food served. Even though we did not do the tasting menu, the portions we received were "tasting menu size", and the elaborate descriptions of the many ingredients on the menu did not translate into particularly memorable food. Also, i did not like the fact that one had to go with a minimum of 3 courses; the vegetable selections were way too elaborate and short on the vegetables. The service was excellent, and the ambience nice and tranquil. However, we won't be going back.
My husband and I are vegan, and love going to to Dovetail on Monday nights for the vegetarian specials, many of which can also be made vegan. . We went with our adult children, who as omnivores ordered from the "vegetable focused" non- vegetarian part of the menu. The food, as usual, was delicious and inventive, and all of us were very pleased with our selections. The service was excellent. I would highly recommend Dovetail for all.
I went with my family -- and the food was delicious. We all enjoyed it, including my 13 year old son who is just discovering gourmet food. He tried everything we all had ordered and devoured it all. Small caveat: the black and white tart wasn't to our taste. We all found the extra flavoring a bit much (I've forgotten whether it was green tea or bergamot, but it made the chocolate taste like something other than chocolate.)
We had a great meal, with great service in a lovely setting, but the wine list was so expensive that we probably won't go back. There were almost no wines under $100, even those we have bought ourselves for $19! It's too bad, because in every other way, we had an excellent experience - a creative menu (I highly recommend the duck), beautifully prepared, with first-rate service. There re many truly great restaurants in NYC which always have a selection of reasonably priced wines on their lists - Dovetail should consider doing that too.
Dovetail was fantastic. We had the three course Sunday Suppa tasting menu, and it was delicious. We failed to tell the waiter that our daughter is vegetarian, so when the amuse bouche was served, it was with meat. The waiter came back immediately with vegetarian dishes for her which she said were wonderful. Beautiful restaurant with gorgeous food. I can't rate it high enough.
A lovely restaurant with very attentive service! If you want a special meal, you'll find it at Dovetail!
We enjoyed the 3 and 4 course menus and all the small dishes offered.
It is an expensive place for everyday dining and the flavors and food combinations are very different. The menu could be challenging for those who want ordinary choices.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. I hadn't been to Dovetail for several years; in the interim, it became more of a fine dining experience, with exceptional and attentive service. I am by no means a vegetarian, but found myself ordering a nearly all-vegetable meal that was varied, delicious, and downright exciting. Kudos to all.
Carefully prepared food with good presentation. FIsh is not over-cooked; and meet is tender. Portion is not too large so that you can tase each dish with full attention. Wine selection is reasonably good. The dining area is rather dim, so a quiet occasion is appropriate. Staff is very much attentive. To use this restaurant for a special occasion is highly recommended. Location is a bit remote from mid-town, but it has easy access with metro or via taxi. It is just behind Americna Museum of Natural History--next to Shake Shack.
Dinner was excellent. The service is unparalleled. The servers were all attentive without being intrusive. The timing of the dishes was perfect, leisurely and I pressured without too much time between courses. The flavors were intense and delicious. Even my non-foodie husband who doesn't like fussy food loved every bite.
Had heard great things about the Veg tasting menu but overall was very underwhelmed with the food. Some of the dishes namely Gnocchi and Baked Alaska were phenomenal but everything else seemed to lack depth of flavor. The restaurant has a great wine and cocktail selection.
Second time dining at Dovetail and it lived up to the previous visit in every way. Exceptional food, extensive wine list and extremely attentive service. This attention to detail was no more evident than when, after speaking with William (who served me last year), he not only recognized me, but even remembered the name of the hotel in which I was staying a year ago. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.
We headed to Dovetail for my husband's 40th birthday and were VERY well treated! We opted for the 4 course prix fixe instead of the tasting - we like to always order different dishes per course so that we can try each other's and therefore sample as many things as we can on their delicious menu! The staff were excellent and they accommodated our crazy schedule without batting an eye. Kudos to the hostess for being completely unflappable!
