Dovetail Ratings and Reviews
we have loved this restaurant for years but over the past 12 months it deteriorated quite rapidly. We gave it another try and decided not to return anymore. Bread we had asked for took almost 15 minutes to come to the table...the water in our glasses was not filtered and smelled of chlorine; the food was fussy without flavor...the desert overly sweet to make up for lack of flavor.
Dovetail is our go-to place for very special occasions. The service is flawless; the food is interesting and delicious; but you pay for the excellence. Value is the one category in which I gave them less than 5 stars but, obviously, we think it's worth it because we keep going back.
I get a nine course tasting menu and my partner gets a four course dinner. The dishes are delicate. But I would expect a more artistic presentation. I recommend lobster, warm avocado, foie gras, wagyu beef, venison, and chocolate souffle. I don't recommend tuna, toffee tart.
Wanted to try a Michelin starred restaurant in NY and picked Dovetail - first impressions - warm reception at the door, shown to bar as table was still occupied - lady at the bar was fun, knowledgeable. Shown to table about 10 mins later. Wine list given promptly - we had to ask twice for a menu when after waiting no menu arrived but they wanted to take our wine order asap. We chose the a la carte - and selected the lobster starter - lovely, the mushroom/quinoa dish - too salty for us - we did not finish, venison - very good, chocolate soufflé - yum/ salted caramel tart - good. They did give us a complimentary additional dessert. Food and presentation good - restaurant very noisy and tables close together. We did the wine pairings. Our meal came to about $650 for that I had wished a little less noise and a bit more space.
Service impeccable - kind, professional and accommodating; decor excellent - beautiful, classy ambience; food quality is mixed - canapes, Maine lobster, mushroom consommé and wagyu are top-notch, but veal ravioli (too rich/creamy), beef ribs (big let-down next to wagyu) and turbot (its creaminess and gameyness do not go well together) were disappointing.
Very attentive staff, high level of customer service, staff is very knowledgeable, and the tasting menu will bring you on a journey and is thoughtfully planned. However, a lot of the dishes were just ok. I wouldn't order or crave any of the dishes, except for the truffle risotto balls they gave in the beginning, and maybe the toffee tart at the end. A lot of dishes are duds like the green apple salad. I substituted the foie gras and had the monkfish instead. It was very dry, overcooked and would never order again. I only left full because I kept asking for more bread. So if you want creative dishes that are unique, good, and money is not an option, come here. However I feel if you spend this much on a meal you should be wowed by the dishes. The Wow factor was missing.
Dovetail has been a superb restaurant for many years, and especially noteworthy for the Upper West Side. My recent visit there was a disappointing change from my many prior visits there. Something was different - an absent chef, some bad luck or something else. Regardless, the dinner, including every course, was markedly below the normally high Dovetail standards. I will go again but if the next meal is anything close to my recent one, I will sadly look for a better alternative on the Upper West Side.
Everything about this restaurant is superb! The food is GORGEOUS and DELICIOUS and presented beautifully. The staff is friendly, kind, and helpful. Undoubtedly some of the best food AND customer service we have had in a long time. We will definitely go back next time we are in NYC!
We tackled the problem of New Year's Eve with a wonderful trip to Dovetail.
As with many of the best restaurants, one should not expect uniform excellence on a holiday.
Having understood the realities of holiday dining I can't say enough about the kind and attentive staff, their patience and calm (through the storm of the evening), and truly fine food.
We will look forward to returning for a more relaxed and luxurious meal under more 'routine' circumstances. My best guess is that this is a restaurant - an ambiance- and a sophistication that should be savored; and we intend to do just that.
Many thanks again to a uniformly outstanding staff.
