Consistently good. We go a couple times a year. Lobster appetizer and ravioli appetizers were terrific, as was the beef. Turbot was good but unexciting.

Dovetail's food and service were top notch. It was exactly what I wanted for my birthday, a chance to eat some truly decadent, out-of-the-ordinary, and well prepared food. The entire staff was wonderful and I never wanted for anything for even a moment! My only critique was that it was on the noisy side in the restaurant, so sometimes I had trouble understanding the servers or my dining companion.

Well executed tasting menu and impeccable service that strives to cater to all needs. It was enjoyable meal. Portions are of course small and pricing is high, but this is NYC.

The food is superb although my wife and I were both somewhat disappointed by the matsutake dish. It was merely good and, thus, not at the level of the other dishes we had. When we return, as we surely will, we won't have this again.
The menu is structured with four prix fixe options. In many such cases, there are supplements for certain items. Dovetail has only two: for adding shaved white truffles as a garnish and for a cheese course instead of one of the many delicious desserts.
The service was attentive and professional if a bit slow. In making the reservation, I let them know that we were celebrating my birthday. Along with our desserts, we were given a plate with an extra dollop of ice cream, a candle and the words "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate. I was very pleased that the occasion was acknowledged and even more pleased that the staff did NOT sing to me.
When we were seated we were asked if we had any allergies and if we were under any time pressure. We weren't and that may have contributed to somewhat more leisurely service than we would have preferred.
It's only fair to add that our four-course prix fixe with wine pairings was quite expensive by our standards. It was worth it for all the reasons stated above but we'll be returning to Dovetail for special occasions only.

I have eaten here a few times. The food was very good each time but not memorable (a few days later I can't remember one thing I ate other than the amuse), but this is a Michelin star restaurant, so,I am holding it to a high standard. I did not overly enjoy my wine pairings which I thought a few of the whites too cold. The service was excellent.

Some really good food. Some quite mediocre. Often in the same dish. The service was at times pretentious and intrusive. Giving guests some time and space, particularly at the beginning when they are getting their bearings, is comforting. The wine we had was good but expensive. In fact the the whole meal was not good enough to justify the cost. I have been to other one star Michelin restaurants that were a lot better. At its best it was good enough. Unfortunately too much was below its best.

As we left Dovetail following a dinner celebrating my birthday, we said to one another," You know, this may have been the best dinner we've ever had at Dovetail." Then we realized that we must have said that a half dozen times. The truth is that Dovetail continues to outdo itself, getting better and better. We lived it up, having matching wines and spirits as well as the gnocchi with fresh truffles. Every dish was superb. The service is perfection. The hospitality is wonderful and the mixologist is wonderful. Don't limit going to Dovetail for special occasions. Every meal there turns into a special occasion.

A cozy atmosphere with professional staff. Food was as expected from a Michelin restaurant. Dishes were all balanced and nuanced with clean flavors. Service was impeccable. Interaction was good too. They stayed and talked as long as I kept the conversation up, they left when I didn't. Very enjoyable time.

My wife and I had a wonderful dining experience at Dovetail. The food was excellent and the service was outstanding. The restaurant is decorated with taste and the ambience is very inviting.
This was our first time here and we will definitely return and try the Tasting Menu.

It was purely perfect. They had a great vegetable focused monday night pre fixe special which was the best thing a vegetarian couple could ask for. French sounding waiter, small and precious vege courses, calm atmosphere, they have it all.

Exquisite service, lovely amuse bouche, wonderful first 2 Course’s of Sunday menu let down only by fact that all 3 deserts were ice cream based.
But this didn’t impact on a warm atmospheric place with great jazz on the sound system and inventive cooking with astonishing flavours and tastes.

A good dining experience overall but the tasting menu needs a considerable amount of work for the price point. I would say a la carte may be a better option. Wine pairings were overall very good. None of the dishes were particularly inspiring. The desserts were definitely the best course, pasty chef clearly pulled his weight.

We went for the vegan friendly food. Were quite dissappointed, just a bunch of cooked vegetables and an avocado with truffle oil on top of it. the service and wine were great though.
The bathroom was sub-standard.
If you're vegan or vegetarian, save your money and skip this one.

Dovetail fails to deliver an experience comparable to other restaurants in its class.

Service was uncoordinated, frequently interrupting us mid-bite to check in or ask the same question another waiter had a mere moment before. The food selections were also excessively confusing with too many distinct menus and upgrades to choose from although the staff was accommodating of our indecision.

We had the tasting menu which was mostly quite pleasant though some courses left us scratching our heads. The pear and ginger sorbet in particular tasted disconcertingly like mildew (or maybe durian, I don't even know, we both had the same reaction to it). The wine pairings were hit and miss.

Overall, I think Dovetail has potential but would benefit from more structure and focus to achieve its namesake ideal.

If you are looking for a restaurant that pays attention to your every need and request this is the one! The food is creatively crafted, beautifully presented and delicious. They alter most of the offerings for dairy free, gluten free, meat free and I imagine other free options. The service is on a high level and the people that serve us are kind and helpful.

I have eaten at Dovetail a number of times over the years and have enjoyed the food and the ambiance. In my last several visits, I have found it moving toward the pretentious. Last night's experience pushed the needle toward the absurd and the dishonest.

We ordered from the Prix Fixe menu where the three-course option (one of the three can be a vegetable!) costs $95. My friend ordered as an entree "roasted chicken, foie gras, napa cabbage, sicilian pistachios." When the waiter cleared the plates, my friend asked why there had been no foie gras and was told that it was just the juice of the foie gras in that dish. We then learned that to actually get foie gras, you would need to order from the Tasting Menu for $145, where one of the choices is "foie gras: graham cracker, huckleberries." At the end of the meal when we asked for the check we were told that we could have the foie gras then or they would put it on our "card" as a note for a future visit. Ridiculous offer.

Also irritating, as we lingered after paying the bill, the staff hovered about asking us repeatedly and disingenuously if we wanted more water until we took the hint and cleared out. Unclassy. Then need Danny Meyers to remind them how to provide a great dining experience.

Dovetail is the best restaurant on the west side. As far as we're concerned, it's the best restaurant in town. We went there last Sunday to welcome a friend from Austin, TX, to town. We had the three-course dinner with wine pairings and, all in all, everything was perfect. The wine pairings were unusually good and the salmon was spectacular. Everything was wonderful.

We have always loved Dovetail for a Sunday evening, but this last visit was not impressive. Service had multiple problems, cocktails that didn't show up until when the first course (with its wine pairing) was already served, regular coffee delivered on espresso order instead of telling diners espresso machine was not working, amuses dropped on the table with no explanation of what they were. Chicken main dish was uninspired - 2 pieces of breast with an accompaniment seasoned with sage that felt like a standard chicken and stuffing. Sundaes - previously a highlight of Sunday evenings, were also not very interesting -- we had talked up the inventive sundaes (sage ice cream! popcorn! fun combinations!) to our guests, but were offered fairly boring options (coconut ice cream w/ fruit, peaches and cream, a chocolate option). For a restaurant at this price point with this kind of reputation, not a good showing. We will have to find another option next time.

The room has class while being casual - not unlike a restaurant you might find in Napa. The ingredients were exceptional but sometimes the combinations were a bit too adventurous for us. Portions were small-ish (typical for tasting menus, but at some point, you just wanted a meal - and not bits and pieces). They made an effort to pick ice cream flavors you would never try elsewhere but came away thinking, “Okay, I never want this again.” On the other hand, the soufflé was perfect. You’ll be very happy you went, but may have second thoughts after the bill arrives. But maybe not. It’s 1 Michelin Star is well deserved.
