Dovetail Ratings and Reviews
I get a nine course tasting menu and my partner gets a four course dinner. The dishes are delicate. But I would expect a more artistic presentation. I recommend lobster, warm avocado, wagyu beef, venison, and chocolate souffle. I don't recommend tuna, toffee tart.
Wanted to try a Michelin starred restaurant in NY and picked Dovetail - first impressions - warm reception at the door, shown to bar as table was still occupied - lady at the bar was fun, knowledgeable. Shown to table about 10 mins later. Wine list given promptly - we had to ask twice for a menu when after waiting no menu arrived but they wanted to take our wine order asap. We chose the a la carte - and selected the lobster starter - lovely, the mushroom/quinoa dish - too salty for us - we did not finish, venison - very good, chocolate soufflé - yum/ salted caramel tart - good. They did give us a complimentary additional dessert. Food and presentation good - restaurant very noisy and tables close together. We did the wine pairings. Our meal came to about $650 for that I had wished a little less noise and a bit more space.
Service impeccable - kind, professional and accommodating; decor excellent - beautiful, classy ambience; food quality is mixed - canapes, Maine lobster, mushroom consommé and wagyu are top-notch, but veal ravioli (too rich/creamy), beef ribs (big let-down next to wagyu) and turbot (its creaminess and gameyness do not go well together) were disappointing.
Very attentive staff, high level of customer service, staff is very knowledgeable, and the tasting menu will bring you on a journey and is thoughtfully planned. However, a lot of the dishes were just ok. I wouldn't order or crave any of the dishes, except for the truffle risotto balls they gave in the beginning, and maybe the toffee tart at the end. A lot of dishes are duds like the green apple salad. I substituted the foie gras and had the monkfish instead. It was very dry, overcooked and would never order again. I only left full because I kept asking for more bread. So if you want creative dishes that are unique, good, and money is not an option, come here. However I feel if you spend this much on a meal you should be wowed by the dishes. The Wow factor was missing.
Dovetail has been a superb restaurant for many years, and especially noteworthy for the Upper West Side. My recent visit there was a disappointing change from my many prior visits there. Something was different - an absent chef, some bad luck or something else. Regardless, the dinner, including every course, was markedly below the normally high Dovetail standards. I will go again but if the next meal is anything close to my recent one, I will sadly look for a better alternative on the Upper West Side.
Everything about this restaurant is superb! The food is GORGEOUS and DELICIOUS and presented beautifully. The staff is friendly, kind, and helpful. Undoubtedly some of the best food AND customer service we have had in a long time. We will definitely go back next time we are in NYC!
We tackled the problem of New Year's Eve with a wonderful trip to Dovetail.
As with many of the best restaurants, one should not expect uniform excellence on a holiday.
Having understood the realities of holiday dining I can't say enough about the kind and attentive staff, their patience and calm (through the storm of the evening), and truly fine food.
We will look forward to returning for a more relaxed and luxurious meal under more 'routine' circumstances. My best guess is that this is a restaurant - an ambiance- and a sophistication that should be savored; and we intend to do just that.
Many thanks again to a uniformly outstanding staff.
We returned to Dovetail after a long absence and were sorry that we waited so long!
It is, as for as we are concerned, the perfect restaurant. There is nothing to fault and much to praise. It is expensive but worth every cent. The restaurant has gotten everything right - the ambience, the decor, the service and the food. Don't change a thing!
1. This restaurant would call you one day before your reservation for confirming.
2. Very low profile, located in a quiet conner. Decorations are elegant and romantic.
3. Dishes are creative and delicious.
4. Service is very intimate.
I love this place very much!
The food is rather fine. However, being in many restaurants of this caliber, the dining experience is highly over priced. And the food is not that exquisite to justify the price. In fact, it is nothing very special about it except the final bill. And it was not driven by the among of alcohol - we only had a glass of wine each.
The staff are professional and knowledgeable.
Our table is too big for 4 people and not conducive to comfortable conversations with friends that we have not seen for a long time.
These things may not matter or be relevant when a dinner comes down to $100 or so. In Dovetail, the price is much higher for nothing exceptional.
Dovetail is a beautiful and very comfortable restaurant. The noise level is low and tables are spaced generously apart. The décor is elegant without being glitzy, and the service was very good.
I was disappointed in the food this time, though. It had no 'wow' factor and for the price, was overvalued in my opinion.
Because of the overall very pleasant environment, I'm inclined to give it another try. It's hands down the handsomest and most grown up dining establishment in the neighborhood.
So happy to celebrate our wedding here! All food was amazing, service was fantastic and they went the extra mile to make us feel special. Splurged for the white truffle risotto - so worth it. Had the lobster with black garlic, wagyu beef, veal ravioli and soufflé. Everything was on point and couldn’t be happier.
Firstly, I love this restaurant ever since my first visit 4 years ago. The quality is amazingly good. Only real complaint this time is that the server didn’t come back to confirm our dessert selection as we had asked at the beginning. The venison is always my favorite and they didn’t disappoint. The mushroom appetizer was a bit salty. Crudo was fabulous. Have been back many times and will come again many more times.
Looked like a wonderful tasting menu. We ordered the vegetarian and vegetable focused meals, with wine pairings. We found the pairings very poorly curated with the food, not at all complimenting the meal and sequenced strangely, with a rioja followed by a sherry. The adventure continued. A brave attempt but not befitting their reputation nor a place I would recommend.
Dovetail continues to impress with impeccable service and great food. The evening is perfectly spaced out for you to enjoy your meal and never have the feeling of being pushed out or even pushed towards a specific part of the menu - enjoyable, comfortable, and great
I ordered the US Wagyu beef and it came out tough as leather. The waiter swapped it for a piece of Japanese Wagyu and it came out blood rare - not my preference. Sent that back and got it back medium (ok), but *very* fatty. Left it at that. They did give me a nice credit on the bill for my trouble and I will definitely go back, but the food had been exquisite on last previous visits, so a bit of a disappointment this time.
