Don's Pomeroy House Ratings and Reviews
My wife and I go every year for our anniversary. And usually one other time during the year. Always well worth the price and the food is excellent. A great place to go for special occasions or just a special night out. Definitely a very special, romantic evening.
ONCE AGAIN POMEROY HOUSE DID NOT DISSAPPOINT! THE FOOD WAS FABOULOUS AND THE SERVICE WAS THE BEST! WE TYPICALLY SIT IN THE PUB, BUT IT WAS A SPECIAL OCCASION SO WE DECIDED TO SIT IN THE DINNING ROOM. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! TOTALLY WORTH IT! WE ORDERED OFF THE THEIR PRE-FIX MENU FOR $33 PER PERSON.
Celebrated wife's birthday and got secluded table in an alcove exactly as requested. Subdued lighting and table candle - perfect.
Started with generous vodka and gin cocktails. The seafood chowder was excellent, good French onion soup, very good short ribs in a rich, dark brown reduction, rib eye special was cooked to medium rare as requested and tasty but not as tender as expected, decent wine list with reliable California selections. Service was spot on, obviously experienced wait staff, struck just the right balance of attention yet not intrusive. Complimentary "birthday" eclair. Nice touch.
Looking forward to returning.
I sodium, salt, very much. That's why I ordered the "Simply Prepared Scallops". However, when I cut into them, and took some bites, I had to take the rest home for my husband to eat. It tasted like someone went all out with the salt shaker. Otherwise, the meal was delicious, and we love the atmosphere. I don't understand why cooks go crazy with the salt shaker as there is salt on the table if people want more. We will probably be back again, but have to really impress "NO SALT" PERIOD. Loved the sweet potatoes, asparagus, bread & butter, asparagus.
Beautiful atmosphere - very comfortable.
A bit disappointed - Our first visit to Don's Pomeroy House and while it is a beautiful building, our meals were just ok. We had heard a great deal about it and wanted to try and drove to Strongsville. Nothing we ordered was bad, just not above average. My wife ordered the Vegan Ravioli and French Onion soup. I had the Wedge romaine salad and the CAB sirloin Oscar. We shared the French crumb apple pie. It was a good meal, but we had expected more. If I lived closer we would try again - as it is, not sure if we will return unless we find ourselves in Strongsville for some other purpose.
I took my wife for a nice Anniversary dinner at Pomeroy House and wasn’t disappointed. I was greeted promptly with a “Happy Anniversary” upon seeing the hostess. My wife was very impressed. Our waitress was GREAT and the food was too. It was a bit on the pricey side but very good and well presented. We sat in the dining area which was very quiet and cozy. The pub downstairs is also very nice. Our waitress also surprised us at the end with a comped chocolate eclair that was absolutely fantastic. I thought this was a very nice touch. I would definitely eat there again. Great food...Great service... Great atmosphere... Well done Pomeroy House. Thanks for making our Anniversary a truly special occasion.
We were seated on the patio and the wafting smell from a dumpster full of putrid food permeated the evening. The French Onion Soup was a bland mash of undercooked onions and a tasteless broth. The service was by far the worst I have ever experienced in any fine dining establishment or an everyday restaurant for that matter. My party was chastised by the management for attempting to use our Open Table Dining rewards points. The manager approached our party and standing table side repeatedly explained how I messed up as a customer and he couldn't help me. This drew stares from other diners and was totally tasteless behavior on the manager's part. After showing him an email from Open Table he conceded I might be legit and honored the $50 gift card. The entire experience showed this restaurant to be very sub par in service. Our bill was nearly $210 after the discount. We would've spent more that evening and possibly been a repeat customer, but the performance by this management team has made me a walking taking billboard of negative propaganda about Don P's. The final straw was our waiter upon delivering our bill informing us how lucky we were that the management took care of us. I along with the rest of my party was absolutely flabbergasted at the low level of consideration for the dining customer. As frequent fine diners we have a level of expectation when dining out, especially on special occasions such as this horrible evening was. DON P's WAS THE WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED.
Have been to Don's Lighthouse twice and liked it. Usually go to Red for special dinners, thought we would try something different.
The good: Pleasantly greeting, wished a happy anniversary. Seated immediately at cozy booth in beautiful old dining room. Two glasses of wine I ordered were good.
The bad: Our server. Came over, introduced himself, got our drinks. Then asked if we wanted appetizers. When we said no, he stood there. No question of “eady to order, do you want to hear our specials?” Completely awkward. So I just launched into my order. Still don't know if they had specials. My steak was bloody in middle when ordered medium well. Didn't get to bloody part until a quarter through. Server only stopped by once, pretty much after first few bites, so I couldn't easily tell him. At that point, did not want to bother with it.
The ugly: After plates were cleared, sat for ~10 minutes. Then waiter dropped off check. Never asked if we wanted dessert, coffee, aperitifs. What?? This is best part of a meal. And it was our anniversary! Definitely did not receive anything "comped" as other reviews mention. Not that I looked for a freebie. Just that after not eating a good portion of my steak, I wanted dessert!
Thought about contacting restaurant. But how do you quantify how a restaurant basically hurt your feelings?!
I had expectations based on price point and description. I expect some semblance of warmth from the service. I expect staff to not loudly talk about adults drinking breast milk (which my husband overheard). I expect patrons do not disrupt a fine dining establishment with singing happy birthday or taking numerous pictures with a flash.
Bottom line: Skip it. Much better options are not far from Strongsville. Definitely feel server "profiled" us. Dumb on his part - I used to wait tables and over-tip regularly.
The upside: We are heading to Chicago and have reservations at an old favorite - Chicago Chop House. They should be able to cook my steak properly.
My husband and I had a wonderful Anniversary dinner at Don's! This has been our favorite restaurant for years and we have never been disappointed with our meal or service! The staff is always warm and welcoming, and our server Alicia was top notch! It seems we can never end our evening without a visit to the Pub downstairs for a nightcap! The history of the building is so interesting and certainly adds to the atmosphere. Whether it's dinner and drinks on the patio, in the Pub, or a more elegant evening upstairs in the Library, we always have a wonderful experience at Don's Pomeroy House!
I have had dinners and group parties at Don's Pomeroy House many times over the years, and never once have I ever been disappointed-in any fashion: Food: quality/taste & selections have always been very high above average. Service: unwavering, it has always been attentive, helpful and friendly. Atmosphere: the ambiance of the various dining rooms are perfectly suited, the outside patio is much more casual than any of the dining rooms, as would be expected. The upstairs private dining area is superb for groups of about 25 or fewer. We held an anniversary party with about 20 people attending, the service was just great, there was always a waitress or waiter in presence, but not hovering, and of course each of us were more than pleased with our choices of meals. The value to dollar spent is excellent. I highly recommend Don's Pomeroy House to my family members and friends.
We celebrated our 21st wedding anniversary at Don's Pomeroy House and it was an absolute lovely time. We were given a private room that was enhanced with candles, linen table cloths, china..the works. The room was complete with romantic music piped in and there was just enough room to dance. Absolutely awesome place for a couple to celebrate one another. By the way, the food was exquisite and the service was excellent.
Our only complaint for this visit is that we were at our table for probably 10-15 minutes before our server came over, and she wasn't the most attentive to our needs during our dinner. The busy boy we had was great -- he was always clearing the table and refilling the drinks.
My three sisters and I dined at your elegant and delicious restaurant. We all ordered different meals from the menu and loved every bite. We're pretty particular but this place was especially perfect for us. The birthday eclair was amazing. Than you Ken for outstanding service.
