We've had good dinners here before, but this time it was a little meh. The buckwheat pasta was a bit gritty, the flavor wasn't as great as it has been other times, the salad and pizza were uninspired. Convenient for a nicer dinner before a movie, but might look for another option.

Disappointed after many good meals in the past. Service was slow. Food (pizza, ravioli, beef cheeks) was ample in quantity but nowhere near as good as in the past. Manager apologized and took cost of food off bill. We had not requested this, and it was beyond our expectations.
We will certainly try again in the future and hope the quality has returned.

Under the circumstances I do not want to give star ratings. I would not recommend to others until we try again.

We had a great time as usual at Donato's : the food is genuine Italian, hand made pasta, great ingredients, recommend to food lovers. One of our party even had truffles on the pasta, pricey but unfortgettable.

We sat right down (we had reservations), but there were long waing times, to order and when we got our food. I noticed that some (chef) friends came in after us and served well before we were. A vegatable substituion was ,well I'll ask the chef? The food and wine was OK, but over priced.

WE've eaten here many times. Always excellent food. I had roasted shrimp with black rice. Outstanding. There were four of us and we all loved our meal.

The food is just excellent as is the service. A little pricey but worth it for the very interesting menu.

We were seated immediately, at a quiet table in a room away from the bar. The manager was great with wine recommendations that matched perfectly with the food. Great Italian dishes and an extensive Italian wines list covering a broad range of regions and price points.

Will definitely return AND recommend to friends!

First time at Donato. I made a reservation a couple hours before and when I got to the restaurant I was seated immediately. My boyfriend was parking the car but had no trouble finding me when he came in. The noise level was high but not annoying. Restaurant was full and it seemed like all the guests were enjoying their stay. I love Italian food and this was a great spot for some authentic Italian! We also tried the calamari which is a must! I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the area. Also the service was spot on. Our server was attentive without hovering.

We found this place through open table while we were in the area on vacation. The food was excellent, the service was attentive and the place was lively but we could still talk. My only complaint was their wine list suffers from the same inflation as many fine restaurants, who seem to think that customers won't hesitate to pay more for a bottle of wine than both of their entrees combined. I am a strong believer that wine lists should include a broad variety of price points, but that seems to be less and less common as we dine out.

Wonderful meal, attentive waiter, great wine list, but..... We had a dinner reservation, but ended up being seated in the bar (?) Noisy and crowded. There were empty tables with table cloths in the dining areas and we were in the bar! With the tight tables, big screen TV, and noise.

Way too noisy! Don’t call “bronzino” sea bass! It’s confusing . Antipasti for $19 didn’t include much beyond bread and lettuce.

The place’s environment was great. Even though the place was about to close when we got there, we were never rushed into ordering or felt any kind of pressure. The menu is somewhat short but there are some great options. I would definitely return.

Donato is a consistent favorite and has never let me down. Squid ink pasta is excellent, but yesterday's branzino was just as good. They also have an Amari list that should be an example to every other bay area restaurant that calls itself Italian.

The food was good, but the menu was a bit limited. I was served a glass of wine that had turned. The color was actually brown (for a rose'). The waiter brought it back and opened a new bottle at our table and poured it. Love the ambience in the restaurant, and location.

A large table of Italian speaking customers tells you it's the place to be for Italian food. Nice menu with some unusual choices like squid ink pasta and pork belly risotto (both delicious!) if you are bored of the typical linguine alla vongole, pasta primavera, carbonara, etc. Prompt service, reasonable price for the quality and selection. Will be our new go-to place!

Went on a Friday night, so restaurant was almost full, even though it is large - two indoor dining rooms plus a good sized outdoor patio. Reservations recommended! As a result, the food was above average. The pours and the service below average. Sediment in the Italian Red was not expected. This place should run a tighter ship and hire a larger and well-trained wait staff, especially for a weekend evening.

Best Italian restaurant in Redwood city, maybe even the peninsula. They have 4 different rooms and a patio. Their staff is very attentive and friendly. Black pasta with octopus is a traditional entree from Venice, which we love. Bagoli with asparagus and ox tail is fantastic. We highly recommend if you are a wine enthusiast. Their sommelier is great!

This was a great find! We stayed 20 minutes away and wanted to check out Redwood City and dine out for a birthday. The menu was fabulous, and everything we had was delicious! I loved the summer squash salad with paper thin sliced zucchini, fresh greens, ricotta salata, a lemony vinaigrette, and the most delicious farm fresh soft boiled egg that had been panko crusted and fried! It was the best salad I've ever had. Our table ordered the orichiette, the ravioli, and a margherita pizza, and it was all outstanding. Would definitely recommend and definitely go back!

Visited on a Saturday night. Establishment was over staffed and yet service was slow and place was not full nor busy. Food flavors were somewhat mixed and lacking focus. Started with pulled boar bruschetta. The meat was dry, bread and meat was not cohesively composed. I had the "Bigoli e Coda", braised oxtail (was greasy) with bigoli pasta (too doughy, chewy). My daughter had the "Risotto con Pancia di Maiale", the risotto was bland with pork belly (good caramelization). My husband had the Agnolotti del Plin (3 meat small ravioli) where the meat sauce suffered from too much tanginess. Overall it was an uneventful dinner experience.

Have enjoyed weekday lunch here before, decided to give it a try for a special birthday dinner. Tried the "tasting menu" blind. It was terrific, too much food almost to finish. Allowed the waiter/sommelier to pick wine pairings for us, and they were terrific choices too. Certainly highly recommended place in Redwood City area.

Donato is a regular stop on the business lunch crowd given its location, business casual feeling, and a reliable menu. Some items were exceptional such as the mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes. Or the Branzino. Others were just average. To be sure, they are a solid choice and again, consistent.
