This place has a good feel to it.things often sound better on the menu than in actuality, though. My butter leaf lettuce salad was weighed down by a heavy dressing, and had browned bits by the stem. My squid ink pasta with calamari was tasty, but was missing the Calabrian chili that was promised on the menu. Everyone was, all in all, happy with their choices. The service was nice.
I had an early weekday dinner, it was quiet and the service excellent. i started with the Arancini deep fried risotto with cheese filling, then the squid ink spaghetti and grilled radicchio. Vert flavorful, and reminded me of the great restaurants in Italy. Go enjoy!
The restaurant is fine. The parking can be hard to find but we were lucky to find one in front within a short time. The food price is reasonable compared to other Italian restaurants. However the food is not that good. My wife ordered a shrimp pasta and was salty. There is no bread come with it. I ordered chicken and it tasted simple, nothing special. By the way, there is no bread basket like I usually see in other Italian restaurants.
Family reunion. Squid ink pasta and ravioli were good but not special. Bread was very good as was coffee and espresso. Parking is difficult. Service was good but not exceptional
Great food - authentic & delicious. Service was a bit slow, but friendly and knowledgeable.
It's my second bad experience at Donato & Co. Last semester I brought some friends with me, and we were poorly assisted by the waiter. The past was "hard" and not "al dente", as they allege it was.
The same happened this weekend. The waiter who assisted us was rude to our guests, questioning his choices. We placed the kids' orders first, but they were only sent to the kitchen later, when the adults were ready to order. According to the waiter, there is a "rule" that determines that all orders from a table must be placed together. The pasta was once again hard - and not "al dente". I consider the price charged is high for the quality of the meal and the service. The restaurant could review this "policy"of one order per table and also considering changing the cooking point of the pastas.
Comfy, stylish and quiet enough to chat. Authentic Italian made with care. Friendly and thoughtful wait staff. Very nice experience in a great neighborhood. We’ll be back.
Tables close together. Person next to us speaking loud making it hard for us to have a conversation. We started with the brochette which was good. My calamari were over cooked and the rogue they-were served with was too salty. The ravioli was also over cooked. Definitely not our usual experience. We like this restaurant.
Nice place. I enjoyed the evening. But I have to say that the food wasn't as good as my expectation with the price tag.
Our waiter, Marco, was amazing. Courteous, thoughtful, knowledgeable and knew exactly when to interject his presence and when to keep a low profile. The food was wonderful! The prawn appetizer with artichoke hearts and a bed of red lettuce was so fresh and tasty.
We had a prosciutto pasta dish and a white fish, all so delicious and well balanced!
Definitely will be back!
Pleasantly surprised by the very delicious food, excellent service, and atmosphere of this new (at least to me) Italian restaurant. We had Sunday brunch and loved it. Will definitely go back,
The food was great, the service was impeccable!
Wonderful food. fresh, inventive, often intense but never belabored. Great atmosphere.
Fabulous service! Impeccable food! Loved the mussels and red frizee salad. Casual and classy. Definitely recommend a visit to this restaurant.
Mom was in from out of town, so we had lunch at a nice place. It was so pretty, the food was delicious and good wine list. Clean bathrooms, pleasant and kind server.
Meal choices are a hit. Desserts are even better. Save room.
Overall very good , I found my grilled octopus grilled to perfection but the ratatouille side dish little too salty and mushy,
The wood bench gets somewhat uncomfortable after a couple of hours.
Celebrating college applications being over
Walked down from The Claremont Hotel. Nice walk. Good food. Hearty pasta, great flavor. Loved the bib lettuce salad. So fresh. Good wine list and knowledgeable staff to navigate some of the lesser known Italian wines.
Staff was efficient, gracious and accommodating. Everyone in our large party loved their entrees and the starter, was also delicious.
Delicious meal, especially dessert; friendly & helpful staff.
Fun place; would come back to try more of the menu.
Donato is a lovely place. The food was excellent as was the service. I took my friend for a birthday lunch
and we were both delighted and surprised-- it was a vacation from pretentious slap dash Bay Area fancy pantsy. It's fine quality and reasonable.
Donato is like an Italian (as in Italy) mid-range restaurant, unpretentious but elegant, not a trattoria and not
high end. One feels welcomed. We loved everything about the place.
Waiter was particularly patient and accommodating. The restaurant was new to me. Reservations easily handled. Menu was interesting and very Italian.
lunch with a friend - everything just right.. including delicious cauliflower dishes!
We liked the room, our server, and the fact that it was possible to hold a decent conversation. My lamb shank with mashed potato was good but my husband's fish mousse was bland and served with bland polenta - two soft bland foods made for a very odd and unsatisfying dish. The Pavlova-type dessert served in a glass jar was delicious.
Appetizers were only so so. At dinner I ordered the chicken and it was completely dry and very bland. Service was extremely slow and inattentive.
Our first experience at Donato was a ladies' celebration brunch (five of us), and we had a lovely time. The room feels spacious, airy and bright. Our server took great care of us. He was professional and attentive, but also approachable and well-equipped with a sense of humor. We ordered lots of plates to share around the table, including an assortment of unique salads, mussels marinara, a squid ink buckwheat pasta (amazing) and the creamy potato & cheese frico cake with poached eggs & Béarnaise sauce (insane). Funny how everything pairs SO WELL with Prosecco! Oh yes, the desserts were also fabulous! We're happy to have discovered this place--so nice that it's right in the Elmwood--and will definitely dine there again.
Our first two courses the radicchio salad followed by the spicy sausage and shrimp rigatoni were excellent. The lamb shank that followed was disappointing. The mashed potatoes and gravy were great but the meat was rubbery and hard to cut or chew. Lamb shank should be soft and falling off the bone. This was not. Service was attentive. I’ll give this place another shot but my birthday dinner was marred by a poor rendition of lamb shank.
I was very impressed with the service, food and atmosphere. I LOVED the lamb dish that I had. There was a large amount of meat and it fell right off the bone. Definitely a great mix between fine dining and casual.
Simply excellent food, service, ambiance. Loved it all. Definitely will become my go to place for everyday, friends gatherings, and when in need of a good bar
This place is amazing: a real Italian’s taste experience. Do not miss it!
Another amazingly delicious dinner! Menu is consistently great and service was excellent!
We had a lovely time at Donato&Co. It was the first time we came at this restaurant and we were not disappointed. Service was great and food was even better. We had the grilled octopus and squid - sooo delicious, my daughter and I consider this dish a must have. We also had the rabbit tortellini which was ok, ricotta cheese appetizer which was melt in your mouth heaven. For desert we had the pana cotta which was the best I ever had. Service was excellent - just right, not too in your face, but attentive enough. Thank you - definitely will be in our list of favorite restaurants.
We’ve been here 4-5 times and the food, cocktails and wine choices are great for the price.
Great location near College Ave, wonderful Italian food, and welcoming service.
Great atmosphere , courteous staff ,excellent and great fresh food.
Unusual excellent deserts. Highly recommend.
Great food and great service. A very pleasant experience. We will return!
Donato is better than ever. Fish is always excellent, the radicchio salad is a welcome addition to the menu, the shrimp and asparagus fritto misto was perfectly cooked, and the panna cotta was terrific and unusual, with dabs of lemon and anise on the side. We appreciate the calm ambience.
Perfect neighborhood trattoria that never disappoints. Simple food with quality ingredients, excellently prepared. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
