Restaurant was busy and waiters were trying hard to keep up with the level of business; good buzz in the place. A little distracted as they were busy but food came quickly and promptly. Wine pricing good.
Great and very creative, tasty, Italian-esque food. A little slower-than-hoped-for service, but not bad. Not a "spaghetti & meatballs" kind of Italian joint, but unexpected combinations of flavors, nicely prepared and presented. Definitely recommend it.
We ended up sitting inside - next to to friends. It almost felt like real life. The food, as always, was excellent. It was great to be back, and so pleased that the restaurant has not lost it's charm.
Food was great, service was slow and inconsistent.
Servers seem stressed and are running around constantly but never have time for you. I think this is a management issue because they have been told to move quickly and al and be doin something instead of methodically moving from table to table. Servers were nice and perfectly capable but clearly scared of getting yelled at for not keeping busy enough.
Wonderful setting, excellent food and great service
The food at Donato & Co. is excellent. Our waiter was exceptional (on Mother's Day) in his detailed knowledge in answering questions and was very attentive throughout our stay! As to the ambiance I only gave 4 stars as it smells like the disinfectant that they have to use during the pandemic and I noticed it when I first walked in. It isn't a potent smell, it just gets in the way of the smell of the cooking. I only mention this because I had been there several times before these dreary covid days and just walking in the place and the aromas assured your food would be excellent. Love this place!
Mother’s Day ♥️
Excellent -- even better than "before" if that is possible.
We ate outside so the noise level was low, but we do not know about inside
The food was excellent. Everyone loved their entrees. The Branzino special was great, as was the pasta and the appetizer salads all terrific. We highly recommend donato & co
First night out in over a year. We had a wonderful time, loved the experience and the food. Felt very safe (COVID).
I love Donato every time I go there. I had the rib eye steak on my last visit with delicious potatoes and asparagus. The steak was cooked to perfection with black salt on the side. Yum!
Very good had the pork dish. Overall very good but probably would have preferred a bit more flavor in the dishes. Pretty unique meals.
we are from Pacific Grove and visit Berkeley a couple times a year. Donato and Co. is one of our "every trip" stops. We prefer inside in non Covid times, but were outside this visit. Inside was too crowded so picked outside which is a little noisy being at street level, and was a little cold despite the outdoor heaters. But the service is always good and we quite enjoy the food. It will stay on top of our list.
We were outside but the heater had gone out. It was still quite nice!
Great service, wonderful ambience, food was sub par. Over cooked fish, tasteless pasta, overall very mediocre
The service was really poor our waiter was really hard to find and unattentive, not really sure he cared about his table and making our dinner time pleasant. Food is just okay, more like a cafeteria food. Thank you anyway
indoor seating now available. Made a special requested dish. Very good. Service was good but just a bit slow given that they were almost empty at Lunch. Also. they serve only espresso coffee drinks. Cappuccino was average at best. Sometimes i just want a good brewed coffee with refills.
All in all, very nice experience. Just walk across the street for coffee at Romano.
What started as just a casual Sunday night dinner out turned into one of the most memorable meals of 2021. The food, and I mean all of it, was delicious. We had two starters, a pasta, a main, and a desert, as well as two cocktails. Everything was as if we were in Italy, a place I frequent often and have been missing terribly over this last year. This was some escapist dining. I will definitely be going back again soon and can’t wait to see how things evolve post-covid.
Great food and big servings.
Delicious food. Interesting cocktails. Friendly service.
Had a wonderful dining experience at Donato's. They have all the safeguards in place to make you feel comfortable without detracting from the ambience of the restaurant. The food was wonderful as always. There is something for every palate here from Small plates to Grilled Meats to Vegetarians options. Home made pastas are wonderful and not drowning in red sauce. A more authentic Italian dining experience!
It's a nice space with some outdoor seating on busy Ashby near College Ave. However, the food was disappointing. The bruschetta was unremarkable. The $30+ steak was kind of gristly. And the Cacio e Pepe, one of my favorite pastas of all time, was downright terrible.
Interior very dated! Food and service good. Terrible location for parking - it’s on a very busy street next to an old donut shop. Not what I expected!
Incredible food with fresh pasta, creative dishes made even better with outstanding service in a cool location. Will definitely go back!
The charcuterie was poorly done and the meats smelled old. My pasta was not cooked properly as well as cold and the bread not fresh. Overall I wouldn't recommend.
Loved the salumi plate and the burrata. The fave bean pasta was in a lovely light broth and very tasty.
The ambiance was awkward. The music was very low and you could here the wait staff’s conversations and complaints. The food was overpriced. However, the host and my server were very nice.
Pasta was over cooked... Communication from staff on timing was annoying. Also felt rushed out after spending $600 on dinner. Will not be going back.
The food is very good. Uncomplicated but well executed and ingredients are high quality. The drinks are very good too. Try the 1840 traditionale if you’ve ever enjoyed tequila, and maybe even if you have not. They’ve done a good job adapting to the times with outdoor seating. The staff is also friendly, attentive and knowledgable.
Had a great meal here last week. Service was attentive and friendly. The food was excellent with several meat-free menu items. The house made pasta was cooked perfectly! Will surely be coming back!
Really had a wonderful meal. Such friendly and good service. Food was novel and tasty.
Ambiance was compromised by being outside on Ashby Avenue. Still nice, but not ideal. I’m sure inside has more charm. Food was fantastic, though!
Pleasant seating inside and out. We chose to sit outside as it was a warm sunny day. Grilled calamari was wonderful: fresh, juicy and flavorful. Pasta was superb: just the right texture, and not too creamy. Even the side green salad was fresh, crisp and complex. Great service. For the quality of food, upscale ambience and generous portions, it was reasonably priced. 5 stars for sure!
Food was great. servers were attentive. Owner/chef gave us some background information on the coffee my husband thought was the best he had ever had.
nice food and service, enjoyed the evening, dinner inside
Food is always good here, but the service was exceptional.
Aurhentic Italian food in an attractive, welcoming, atmosphere.
Delicious cocktails and food. The service was attentive, but not hovering. Highly recommend.
Shared a positively lovely dinner at Donato & Co. with my Maid of Honour and Mom the night before my wedding, and I am so happy to report the experience was just delightful!
The menu, food, and drinks were great (we each had some tasty cocktails before sharing a delicious bottle of wine, Tenutarossa's Montelpulciano D'Abruzzo), as was the wonderful service. The ambience was also perfectly vibey yet dressed-up for the happy occasion. This was a perfect way to prepare for the Big Day celebrating this big life milestone with some of my favorite most central women. I so enthusiastically recommend dining with Donato & Co. to anyone with buds to taste!
