I can’t say enough how excellent this restaurant is. Our appetizer was a salumi plate... duck, pork, and salumi plus picked peppers and onion. Delicious. The pasta... cacio y peppe, ravioli, bolognese all perfect. The dessert... Zuppa inglese fantastic. The bread was warm and wonderful. Service was perfect. My favorite restaurant.

The food here is fantastic. The squash tortellini, wood fired squid, cauliflower with pesto were all excellent. The waiter did not bring bread, did not bring cream and did not remember that the gathering was a birthday when serving dessert. The restaurant was not that busy, I have had great service at this restaurant before so I will be back. Since we were a party of six a 20 percent tip was added to the bill. We usually would have added a little extra but not this time.

THIS is my NEW FAVORITE restaurant in Berkeley. Beautiful food, great service, great atmosphere. Nice list of wines by the glass. Not a single complaint.

Food was delicious. Wine pours on the skimpy side. Service was spotty. A large part of the place was reserved for a group. Unfortunately the group did not sit down for about 40 minutes. They monopolized the whole bar and were loud. We were next to the bar and could hardly talk comfortably. They also blocked the way to the restrooms. Not the best place for a quiet meal.

Disappointing the food and service has gone downhill since the first time we went. Will not be going back. The owner made a rude comment to my husband on the way out which was uncalled for and inappropriate.

This is probably my favorite Italian restaurant in the South Berkeley, North Oakland area. I believe it is a bit more in line with common Italian dishes and offers more variety than either Bellanico or Italian Colors.

Our waitress was attentive, personable and very accommodating. She did an amazing job, considering she was the only waitress working the lunch shift in a moderately busy Monday afternoon. The food was tasty, portions adequate. Enjoyed our meal, will definitely return!

This is our third or fourth time at Donato, and It has consistently been very good. The portions are large, the dishes are well thought out, the menu is varied, the service is impeccable, and the noise level is such that we can have discussions without yelling! All in all, a very good neighborhood location. One tiny suggestion: one member of our party ordered the three small pizzas appetizer; the pizzas were mostly dough ... perhaps consider making them differently or smaller or adding filling? But this is a very minor suggestion, as all the other dishes were excellent!

I would personally stick with what they do best: the pasta and dessert dishes. I recommend the Carbonara! Every dessert was fantastic. Yes, our group tried them all.

Lovely food, great service and the amazing noise cancelling system that the previous restaurant installed allows everyone at the table TO HEAR EACH OTHER!!! :) So, great place for a dinner meeting or multi-generational family dinner. I have had dessert meetings in the bar area.

A wonderful experience, not your typical Italian restaurant. Lots of savory flavors without the heavy tomato influence you usually find. Our waiter was "fresh off the boat" Italian and very attentive and friendly. Love this place !

Went for Berkeley Restaurant Week. 3 course lunch menu for $25 was a great deal & included dessert! Only thing was, there was only one option instead of a choice. Good thing all courses were delicious & so unique! I'd come again. Their happy hour looks very fun!

Seven of us shared two charcuterie boards, and each had a cocktail, a different entree, and we shared two different bottles of wine. There was not one slip-up during the entire dinner. The charcuterie, made in-house, was the most unusual and delicious I have had anywhere in the Bay area. The entrees were also both unusual but also truly traditional Italian dishes; not the typical pizza, or tomato base sauces, but dishes like we had in Rome---roasted Duroc pork neck chops served with grilled brussell sprouts and polenta; ravioli stuffed with guinea hen in a light marsala sauce; grilled one-half cauliflower; cacio e pepe; prosciutto di parma and ricotta ravioli; and I believe a pasta with liberty duck sugo. Everyone raved about the the food and the two Italian wines, a Brunello and Nebiola. The desserts were also delicious but not too heavy. And although the restaurant was very busy, the service was excellent, with the server knowing each dish and able to describe it when asked. He was also very knowledgeable about the wines. This isn't an inexpensive restaurant, but it is worth every dollar spent. I highly recommend it for a nice evening out.

This was our first visit and we wanted a reservation for lunch. We found this via Opentable. We got in right on time and had a good table. Noise was minimal. Service was timely and polite. Food was really good. Two had brunch and one had food off the lunch menu and all were quite pleased, we even had a great desert. Highly recommend this place.

I ordered the caccio e Pepe, it was authentic to how I had it in Rome. Would go back and order again. My friend got the oxtail risotto and unfortunately he said he only got 2 bites of meat and the rest was all bones. Considering we went for his bday I was bumbed he didn't enjoy his dish. But I really enjoyed my pasta and would go back.

Tried this restaurant during Restaurant Week. We really wanted to like it, since we loved its sister restaurant Desco (now closed) in Oakland. Wine seemed way overpriced: $15 and $18/glass for average wines. Three-course prix fixe menu ($25) seemed reasonable, but the dishes were mediocre (e.g., too-thick dough on ravioli). Also some odd combinations on the plate. Service was very friendly but not super-competent.

Well, I had lunch her recently for the first time, had wonderful experience and knew I had to bring my wife here ( she had not been here before) for her birthday. Needless to say, my wife was extremely pleased and kept mentioning how awesome the food was, days after. I love the atmosphere, their vision and how nice everyone is. We will return.

Donanto is a neighborhood gem but would also be a worthwhile destination choice. Lovely selection of authentic and homemade dishes. Daily menu specials are seasonally appropriate. Now dined there twice and will return. You can't go wrong with any of the menu choices.

The special crab pasta was extremely ordinary. Two of us ordered it.
The duck portion was lonely on the plate.
Don’t think we will rush back.
