This was our first time visiting this authentic Italian restaurant in the Elmwood district. The food was delicious but both food and drinks were turned out slower than what we expect. My cousin and her boyfriend arrived early and sat at the bar and even their drinks took a long time to be served so not sure what was the issue. Marco was great with our family's request and overall my aunt enjoyed her birthday dinner. She loved that we sang for her and then again for the other table also celebrating a birthday :)
Appetizer, main, 2 glasses wine, and dessert for each of 2 diners plus 18% tip came out to $200. Not unreasonable for a dinner date given that all the food was delicious. Service was slow but the server was apologetic and kept us up to date. Highly recommend the beet and ricotta salad, the red frilly greens salad .... both quite engaging and tasty. Would go back.
We had to wait a while to be seated although we had a reservation. Others were waiting too. However once we were seated, everything else went well. The service was excellent and the food was creative and delicious. It wasn’t too noisy which we seniors greatly appreciated!
The food was a bit strange overall, and it wasn't very tasty. I would not recommend this place.
Always an awesome time at Donato. Highly recommended.
Excellent food- excellent service as always
Thanks for a lovely birthday dinner for my husband
Everything about it was really excellent. I can't wait to go back.
It was an off brunch but remains a favorite restaurant highly recommend going.
Wonderful selection of appetizers and entrees and the dishes were delicious! Great service by our waiter Marco and the wine steward who’s name I cannot recall. He did an excellent job of decanting and serving the bottle of wine we brought.
Love coming here. Parking is easy in the area and the service and food is just terrific. The noise level is great and we can hear each other talk.
Sat at the bar and had a cocktail. Very good. Arancini were also super tasty. Main dishes and appetizers were good but not amazing. Tables were spacious and comfortable.
Food was great as was the service. We go there often. I totally recommend
It’s a great place for us because we do not finish until 8:30, so we can make a reservation for 8:45 and have a great meal.
This is the first time I ate at this restaurant. I have been to other Donato's and the pasta is always excellent. The service was normal, but they were not very busy. I would go back again.
Great service, friendly authentic
We are not huge Italian food fans which can be heavy on the cheese and pasta, but we were pleasantly surprised by the food and service and will go back. The frisée salad was delicious, as were the tomato salad and the calamari entree. The pork loin was dry and tough. The squash pasta was a little rich for our friend’s taste but others may love it. The Pistachio Semifreddo was excellent.
Everything was excellent but it is a bit pricey. A good place for authentic Italian food.
Wonderful dinner. Creative and pleasant flavor parings. Reasonable prices. I will order the swordfish and black rice again, but it is hard to choose!
Donato's will be our "go-to" restaurant in the future.
One of the best! A wonderful place to have a delicious meal & to be able to carry on a conversation!!!
Delicious! Especially the salad with the egg and the pastas! So good.
Good food, I had the pork special and my associate had the lamb. Both were very good. We split a salad and pasta and both were good as well. The value is exceptional. Bottle of wine and 3 course meal for 2 under a 125, it’s hard to find a restaurant with that quality at that price. The restaurant was crowded but the noise level was acceptable for a business dinner. Sat on the bar side and the service was little slower then sitting on the restaurant side. Would highly recommend it.
Lovely meal. Fresh ingredients and great service. Second time and both were really good. Cocktails are great as well.
3 of 4 dishes completely over salted
Most dishes had too much going on.
Fabulous restaurant in Berkeley! Do not miss it!
My husband and I had dinner there on Saturday night. The waitress took our order, and it seemed like it took about 5 minutes and she served the food. My husband received the wrong dish. They rushed out the correct dish. No bread was served. The waitress gave us the check and came back about 2 minutes later to see if she could pick up the credit card. We were hustled out of there in about 15 minutes total from start to finish. We felt like we had just had dinner at an upscale fast food place. Not going back after that experience!
We loved our dinner! We loved our server. She was so sweet and accommodating to our large family. Seeing Marco was an added bonus! We already made a reservation for the next time we are in town! xo
Food was fine overall — flavors were good but little executionary things had been rushed and preventing the meal from being great.
Service was terrible. They asked me if I wanted more coffee, I said yes, and then they never came back with coffee. I asked 2 times for salt and pepper and never got it, so eventually I just got up and got it myself from the servers station. Weird because the place was basically empty and there were plenty of servers around.
Portions also pretty small.
Wonderful dining experience! Great food and ambience. Wonderful night to celebrate a birthday or any special occasion.
This was our first time to the restaurant which has been on my go to list for awhile. We had a delightful evening. The restaurant is large but cozy, the staff is friendly and helpful and the food is very good and presented well. We loved the sardine appetizer which was fried but not oily, and each of us had a pasta dish. My husband had the slow cooked wild boar and mushroom sugo which was spectacular and I had the squid ink spaghetti with calamari which was tasty but I liked my husband's dish better. We had a nice bottle of wine with dinner and we'd come here again.
I made the reservation the night before. I was surprised that I was able to get the reservation at the
time I wanted. We went to celebrate my father's birthday (he is deceased) It was lovely. My mother
loves to go to Donato& Co.
Our houseguests were treating us and it was our choice. It was a very good decision. As on previous visits, noice level very acceptable, menu interesting, service and food very good. Prices very reasonable. It will continue to be a go-to restaurant.
Wonderful dinning experience. It’s our number 1 go to restaurant for a quite week night dinner or special occasion on weekends. Owner is lovely and always try’s to be accommodating.
I wish the food measured up to the ambience of Donato. The chicken in both the chicken salad and the fried chicken salad were like tasteless leather. This place needs a chef upgrade asap.
A great spot for a working lunch. Excellent menu and service. I’ll be back!
Setting very nice poor service wouldn’t explain dishes or check with satisfaction of meals. We informed waiter of issues without renedy
I have become a major yenta about this (and spoke to the night manager already), but constant music in a resto is very painful for me. It wasn't as loud as many, thank heavens, but it is somewhat distracting. Otherwise Donato's is great, and since we live within walking distance it's become our local "joint".
Everything we ordered was delicious. Wine was superb. Attentive and courteous service. Low noise level made conversation easy. Wonderful place for a great dinner date.
Grazie allo chef a Donato & Co. si mangia sempre benissimo. Questo è un autentico ristorante italiano e lo chef riesce sempre a sorprenderci. Anche il vino suggerito e' sempre di ottima qualita'! Il servizio eccellente! Grazie!!!
