Staff was efficient, gracious and accommodating. Everyone in our large party loved their entrees and the starter, was also delicious.
Delicious meal, especially dessert; friendly & helpful staff.
Fun place; would come back to try more of the menu.
Donato is a lovely place. The food was excellent as was the service. I took my friend for a birthday lunch
and we were both delighted and surprised-- it was a vacation from pretentious slap dash Bay Area fancy pantsy. It's fine quality and reasonable.
Donato is like an Italian (as in Italy) mid-range restaurant, unpretentious but elegant, not a trattoria and not
high end. One feels welcomed. We loved everything about the place.
Waiter was particularly patient and accommodating. The restaurant was new to me. Reservations easily handled. Menu was interesting and very Italian.
lunch with a friend - everything just right.. including delicious cauliflower dishes!
We liked the room, our server, and the fact that it was possible to hold a decent conversation. My lamb shank with mashed potato was good but my husband's fish mousse was bland and served with bland polenta - two soft bland foods made for a very odd and unsatisfying dish. The Pavlova-type dessert served in a glass jar was delicious.
Appetizers were only so so. At dinner I ordered the chicken and it was completely dry and very bland. Service was extremely slow and inattentive.
Our first experience at Donato was a ladies' celebration brunch (five of us), and we had a lovely time. The room feels spacious, airy and bright. Our server took great care of us. He was professional and attentive, but also approachable and well-equipped with a sense of humor. We ordered lots of plates to share around the table, including an assortment of unique salads, mussels marinara, a squid ink buckwheat pasta (amazing) and the creamy potato & cheese frico cake with poached eggs & Béarnaise sauce (insane). Funny how everything pairs SO WELL with Prosecco! Oh yes, the desserts were also fabulous! We're happy to have discovered this place--so nice that it's right in the Elmwood--and will definitely dine there again.
Our first two courses the radicchio salad followed by the spicy sausage and shrimp rigatoni were excellent. The lamb shank that followed was disappointing. The mashed potatoes and gravy were great but the meat was rubbery and hard to cut or chew. Lamb shank should be soft and falling off the bone. This was not. Service was attentive. I’ll give this place another shot but my birthday dinner was marred by a poor rendition of lamb shank.
I was very impressed with the service, food and atmosphere. I LOVED the lamb dish that I had. There was a large amount of meat and it fell right off the bone. Definitely a great mix between fine dining and casual.
Simply excellent food, service, ambiance. Loved it all. Definitely will become my go to place for everyday, friends gatherings, and when in need of a good bar
This place is amazing: a real Italian’s taste experience. Do not miss it!
Another amazingly delicious dinner! Menu is consistently great and service was excellent!
We had a lovely time at Donato&Co. It was the first time we came at this restaurant and we were not disappointed. Service was great and food was even better. We had the grilled octopus and squid - sooo delicious, my daughter and I consider this dish a must have. We also had the rabbit tortellini which was ok, ricotta cheese appetizer which was melt in your mouth heaven. For desert we had the pana cotta which was the best I ever had. Service was excellent - just right, not too in your face, but attentive enough. Thank you - definitely will be in our list of favorite restaurants.
We’ve been here 4-5 times and the food, cocktails and wine choices are great for the price.
Great location near College Ave, wonderful Italian food, and welcoming service.
Great atmosphere , courteous staff ,excellent and great fresh food.
Unusual excellent deserts. Highly recommend.
Great food and great service. A very pleasant experience. We will return!
Donato is better than ever. Fish is always excellent, the radicchio salad is a welcome addition to the menu, the shrimp and asparagus fritto misto was perfectly cooked, and the panna cotta was terrific and unusual, with dabs of lemon and anise on the side. We appreciate the calm ambience.
Perfect neighborhood trattoria that never disappoints. Simple food with quality ingredients, excellently prepared. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
the waiter was very good! and attentive. The food was fantastic and was served on time. The coffee was fresh and delicious. This is a great restaurant.
I like that the tables aren't smooshed together, room for your own table conversation. Food preparation was beautiful and tasty. Portions were a bit small for my husband and sons who eat alot. I would have been fine for any of their portions. Waitstaff very attentive. New favorite go to restaurant when in Oakland/Berkeley
The food is delicious with the exception of buckwheat ravioli which was very bland. Service was excellent. Overall, a relaxing, enjoyable, and delicious meal.
We sat at the window viewing the street. Service was very attentive and sensitive to our pace. The food was a new adventure for us. The Italian food here is mostly northern Italy (Milan area) with variety. I had small plate Pizzelle with perfectly crisp browned crust & cheese melt to die for. Asparagus side was al dente but not too much. Calamari dish wished for more calamari. Prices make dinner doable. Wait! We had a cream-with-crumbles dessert that was heaven. Sigh.
Early dining is ideal! Lots of staff attention
We've been to Donato & Co. a number of times and it is consistently great! Creative Italian menu that changes, but always delivers. Aranccini! Papapedelle! Caceo E Pepe! All fantastic! Highly recommended. Oh, and apologies for the spelling.
The ambiance was great for meeting up with my friend for an early Sunday dinner. I’m pleased to say our service was friendly and relatively attentive. Unfortunately the food was definitely lacking.
I ordered the octopus which wasn’t bad, just not memorable. I found the underlying succotash more interesting. As for the side of polenta, this had to have been the most disappointing dish I’ve eaten in a long while. It was cornmeal and water in a square. No salt, no seasoning. I understand polenta can be a great base - I make it all the time- but there wasn’t even a sauce to use as a vehicle. Just warm cornmeal and water.
The staff was reasonable enough to remove it from the bill. Just can’t say I’ll make a point of going back for the food.
Perhaps I’d have had better luck with the house made pastas
We had an amazing lunch - so fresh and delicious! Gorgeous salads, delicious small pizzas, house made bread and focaccia! Perfect ambiance - perfect for chatting! Lovely high ceiling room. Six of us - great service. Delicious roasted tomatoes. Wonderful find!
The food is soooo bland snd tasteless. Pastas need more flavor and sauce. Does anyone in the kitchen taste anything? The chicken is dry
They need a new chef
First time here. Location is great, loved the vibe; the service was attentive, but overly so, and the food both delicious and beautifully presented.
The atmosphere was lovely and the host and servers were attendant and responsive. The dishes were good but needed just a bit more. My branzino with potatoes was good but seemed a touch overdone and server had problems filleting the whole fish cleanly. The plate could have use a splash of green to contrast with tan potatoes and white fish. Broccolini, spinach or ... My gf really enjoyed the buckwheat ravioli and the beet and cara cara orange salad was lovely. Would go back and try the pasta.
Food was amazing, and they were very accommodating to our vegan guests as well!
Salads were very good, as was the chicken entree. The buckwheat ravioli was disappointing because the veggie stuffing had been marinated in vinegar; it gave the dish a sour unpleasant taste. Service was excellent.
Excellent location and incredibly awesome food.
Real Italian food from Italy.
Best wild boar pappardelle we ever had - and yes, we were born and raised in Italy.
We will be back for sure soon!
The food wasn’t good. We wish we could have loved it. The place is cute. It’s just very mediocre food.
From the first time we walked in you felt right at home. Our server was the best. She knew everything about each dish and even recommended some things to us. I will be a return customer.
This restaurant is in a great location, the ambience is wonderful; the drinks are fun and delicious, and the food is outstanding! I took friends, who were visiting from out of town, and we had a great time! I will definitely be back to try more dishes!
I have recommended Donato & Co to friends and family. Everyone has had pretty good experiences. Any missteps seem to be around service. Sometimes I think the restaurant isn't staffed enough. But aside from that, the food is excellent! Servers are pleasant and efficient. Great value for price. Menu always has something that interests me. We've been for lunch and brunch several times. Must try dinner sometime.
