Doe Bay Cafe
Monday May 13th Doe Bay Café will be hosting a 5 course wine dinner. We are thrilled to be featuring the wines of Angelo Negro from Italy’s Piedmont region. Seating at 6pm. Cost is $100 including wine. Reservations required.
The Doe Bay Cafe is a fun place to go, primarily since it’s part of the legendary Doe Bay Resort. But, the restaurant itself is just average in every way. On can easily surpass the quality of the food at home, and the menu was not all that interesting. One reason to go to an expensive restaurant is to find something that you cannot experience at home. The Doe Bay Cafe did not offer such an experience. The restaurant was too loud, the service a bit slow, and the price was high.
I had moderate expectations going in to Orcas Island for the first time in general. I suspected that it would have little offer in terms of great food and atmosphere for great value. However, the island blew me away, as did Doe Bay Cafe. My favorite part of our visit, dinner at Doe Bay Cafe presented a well-rounded menu of creative flavors and fresh local ingredients. The plating was classy yet approachable. The wine list was concise yet well-rounded. The service was attentive and friendly yet non invasive. I can't wait to go back and would recommend over literally any other restaurant on the island.
I hate to write this review because I am very fond of this place - the food is delicious, considered, flavorful and usually a delight. I also hate to write it because I know there has been a labor shortage on Orcas this year and it has been a problem for many businesses. HOWEVER: we made a reservation for dinner, were seated on time and...35 minutes later our cocktails arrived, 50 minutes later we had to ask for the bread to be brought to us (which they charge for) and one hour and fifteen minutes later after 2 reminders our appetizers were served. There were no updates provided, no apologies given, no comps made.
Doe Bay Cafe plays pro ball in terms of their food - the service should be of the same caliber. It is unprofessional and rude to assume diners should wait seated for over an hour to be served, and if this happens (which we all understand does from time to time) the diners should be given fair warning and compensated for it. At a minimum in any fine dining establishment (our bill was over $200 for 3 adults and 2 children after all) I would expect a round of drinks, free apps, free bread (???) and a sincere thank you for patience waiting. Not one of these things occurred - which is, in the end, straight up inconsiderate and does not reflect the professionalism the food deserves.
Doe Bay is not a formal establishment. But it is priced as a gourmet establishment and if patrons are asked to pay the price they deserve far better treatment. Frankly, i would expect and typically receive far better treatment at any of the lower priced restaurants on the island.
Step it up, Doe Bay - or you’ll lose customers fast.
Outstanding, attentive service with a smile. Charming, rustic setting. Farm to table menu. The pasta dish was favorable as was the fish dish. The only regret was having only one fish dish that was black cod, and not my favorite fish. I was hoping for halibut or salmon.
We had a great experience dining at Doe Bay Cafe. I had been to Doe Bay before to stay and soak but had never had dinner there. Both the service and food were impeccable and exceeded our expectations. I had a friend in town from Denver and he was equally impressed. Molly was our server and she was friendly, warm, and attentive. We would definitely return! Thank You.
Food was very innovative and delicious. Ambiance is casual with the feel of a remote camping site. View is not as interesting as other parts of Orcas Island, but the food and service more than makes up for it. Definitely worth the drive but make reservations far in advance as they are very busy!
Everything was fresh, interesting and fabulous!
I really loved everything. The food at time was not my flavor or sensibility. But some of it was to die for. I suggest you go and enjoy it for yourself and come to your own personal conclusion.
Wonderful place, but for some reason our waitress decided talking to customers wasn’t part of the job description. Very odd. On a previous evening with a different waitress who was more engaged we had a much more enjoyable experience. Food and ambiance is outstanding though.
Wonderful place to dine. The food was absolutely great and the view was nice. We sat outside in the afternoon in the shade of a tree about 5 PM and it where it was very pleasant. I had the salmon and it was probably the best I ever had.
Warm and welcoming service, excellent food from a perfectly dressed nectarine salad to salmon cooked just right, Doe Bay continues to be a gem. An outstanding location and well crafted drinks — could not recommend more highly.
Quaint setting with sophisticated and well-executed menu. Knowledgeable waitstaff. Have a drink outside on the patio overlooking the water and then move inside when the chill sets in. Will be back.
Food was not very fresh, portions were small and the service not great. The setting was the only redeeming quality.
This restaurant is a bit of an unlikely find, tucked away in a low key beach resort in a natural, unpretentious, elegant setting. The indoor seating is fairly nondescript but the outside patio is very nice, the tables spaced far enough apart that you feel like you have a little room. Our cocktails and meals were excellent, the service is great and the atmosphere is lovely. It didn't hurt that it was a beautiful day, but heavy blankets and space heaters are also there in case you get a bit chilled as the sun goes down.
Delicious food and outstanding service from our server, Brie. Our table presented the restaurant with a bit of extra work: We added a fifth guest at the last minute, didn't get our full contingent of guests there until 20 minutes after we originally sat down, and had more mess than the average table, but they took everything in stride and served us an amazing dinner.
Great place, amazing view, and amazing food!
Delicious, seasonal, local food + attentive staff and great views.
Wonderful location- outstanding fresh and organic ingredients from Orcas Island. Nice wine list and bar cocktails.
Excellent service, wine, apps, and really great food. Wonderful location, will come again soon.
Great food and location.
Just lovely food preparation and combinations of tastes! Fresh, their garden to table, seasonal - what more could you want.
We think the food is the best on Orcas Island. Can’t wait to go back.
We walked out. Our reservations were for 8:15. They seated us about 20 minutes late. Come 8:55 and still no one had come by to take our drink order. The staff completely ignored us. We did have brunch there a few days before and the food was very good and the ambiance very charming. I don’t usually rate places based on service, but this time I am. I guess on an island with lots of tourists they don’t really need to care about that. I’m from Portland and competition is high, so servers are usually so nice and at least would tell us why there was a delay, apologize for the wait, and get us drinks ASAP.
Great dining experience as we celebrated my son’s wedding.
Came for dinner after a dip in the hot tubs. Lovely attentive service, delish food, excellent cocktails. The chickpea pancake was insanely good! Never had anything like it. Delicious. The halibut was also excellent.
Doe Bay Cafe is the best restaurant on Orcas Island.
The food was so delicious! Especially the oyster and clam dishes. The cocktails were innovative. And The views of the water & cliffs were beautiful. It is a special restaurant where memories are made.
I love the concept of this restaurant, farm fresh and super local. I had my expectations a bit too high and was let down. I ordered a pasta dish that tasted like hamburger helper rather than gourmet cuisine and it was described as having mushrooms in it, but they were no where to be found. My partner and I were celebrating a special occasion but there wasn’t any acknowledgement of that. But the location is amazing, and it’s got a very cozy vibe.
Yummy food, great location. Interesting and fun cocktails. The ice cream is sooo good!
My wife and I were in the San Juan's celebrating our 25th anniversary, eating in great restaurants every night--and the best we had was at Doe Bay Cafe. Everything we ordered was delicious, creative and unique. We are pescetarian, and there were many options we could choose from. I would highly recommend this restaurant!
So great! I love that they are local and organic. But I really love that their food is so delicious! And we enjoyed the live music! Nice and loud sitting right by the band, and we loved it!!
What a lovely place this is. Doe Bay Cafe is friendly restaurant with high quality food, great service and perfect atmosphere. I can't recommend it too highly. GO! You won't be sorry!
Wait staff was outstanding...knowledgeable, attentive, willing to work with chef on special needs. Oysters great, salmon great.
Loved the multilayered flavored food. Great service. Beautiful view. The noise level got a bit too loud for me. Something about the room makes everything echo. Other than that, it was a lovely space to celebrate my birthday.
My wife and I spent a delightful 4 nights at the resort. The staff is the most friendly and amicable that one could find anywhere. The menu is creative and delicious, the views over the bay spectacular. The ambiance in the restaurant is relaxed and casual.
If I were to suggest on thing, the food tended to be overly rich in oils.
Doe Bay Cafe is defitinely worth a little drive on Orcas Island. You’ll be met with the most scenic views of the island, emerald green water right outside your table, warmest staff and the most delicious farm-to-tabke food. I never knew one could be excited about a memory of tonnato radishes - but it’s possible in Doe Bay Cafe!
Amazing food to complement an amazing place. Had a chickpea pancake that blew my mind!
Food. Service. Atmosphere. Local. Craft Cocktails. Attention to Detail. Did I mention service? A must go while on Orcas. We love Doe Bay Cafe!
The best vegetarian meals ever! Awesome food. Sophisticated flavors.
Servers were friendly, but we sat ignored for over 45 minutes while people who came in and ordered after us got their food first before we even got the bread we had ordered right when we sat down. We had biked the 20 hilly miles out to Doe Bay and I was literally crying from hunger. We just had to sit there with empty drinks and I couldn't even get anyone's attention when I went up to the bar. Get it together! The table next to us had a half-eaten loaf of perfectly warm soft bread just sitting there and when they left, I took it and ate it. It was delicious. The food was out-of-this-world best-meal-of-my-life good as always, except for the accursed bread, which was burnt.
