Did tasting menu (6 course) with a shared wine tasting. Was not cheap but was worth it. All the wines were very interesting, beyond what one would usually drink, and expertly paired. The food was delicious- except for dessert which was mediocre.
Prices are high; food, service and ambiance were excellent. It was a special meal.
My husband and I went to DOC for a date night. We both tried the tasting menu with wine pairing and really enjoyed the food. Each course was presented beautifully and the wine was accompanied with a bit of storytelling about the Italian regions from which each bottle was selected. Really tasty food, comfy ambience. We also really enjoyed watching the chefs cook. Uniquely intimate setting.
Good but nothing spectacular.
Went for Valentine’s Day, fixed menu with great menu. Food was very good in quality but lacking in wow factor. Most dishes were just warm and not hot, even the pasta, risotto and lamb steak. Desserts were lacking as both were pudding type (budino and Panna Cotta). It was evident that the small kitchen lacks the ability to make much else.
Wines were a bit odd with no solid go to for the night. Tasted several that were different but nothing we loved.
I give them all an A for effort but we left a bit underwhelmed.
Sunday family style dinner. Good, but not as awesome as dining during the week. The entire staff seemed fatigued and overworked.
Had the Saturday night early seating. They did a good job of communicating up front about the family style menu and I appreciated the call ahead to confirm any allergies. Overall kind people and well meaning. We ordered drinks soon after sitting down but they forgot to bring them to us and I had to ask about our drinks as the third course was coming out. Food was really great. There was a little mix up on the billing but we figured it out eventually. Not sure I'd spend the same amount of money for that meal again. Very expensive!! But I would go for the Sunday supper which seems like a much better value. VERY NOISY!!!! It was quaint that all of the food prep and dishwashing happened in front of the restaurant for all of the diners to witness but I would prefer a less noisy atmosphere and a little less action during my meal.
The tasting menu shared between 4 friends is an absolutely unforgettable experience. And it has been a reliable go-to for special occasions. Dishes are carefully prepared with deep love and boundless creativity. They called us ahead of our reservation to ask about potential allergies...class act!
The pappadelle pasta was amazing! The space is small, but could easily accommodate disability access.
As always, DOC is AMAZING. It's is so cozy and friendly that you'll want to have a slow, leisurely meal. A slightly slower pace of food arriving would have been the only way to improve a wonderful experience. Highly, highly recommend!
Food excellent. Way too expensive. Would not return
This was a totally enjoyable dinner. We did the Tasting Menu and had plenty of food and enough variety to make everyone happy. The food was interesting and well prepared.
We had another fabulous dinner at DOC, The risotto was fantastic and different than the usual creamy risotto that I have had. My husband had Steel head and he really liked the way is was prepared. We almost licked our plates clean. Thank you for a terrific meal!!!! the music was a bit loud when we first arrived put as soon as we settled it was turned down to a comfortable level which added to the evening.
Great food. A little pricey for a regular night out but delicious.
Delicious prix fixe dinner. Great care and service. Relaxed dining allowing us to savor each course and not feel at all rushed. Nice wine pairings.
Best restaurant in town. Can't wait to come again!
My favorite restaurant in Portland. Oh, and I am from here and have tried them all.
I had read good things about DOC when I made the reservation but was very pleasantly surprised when we arrived to find a small welcoming restaurant with amazing food and exceptional service. It was a very quiet night for them which surprised me. The ambiance is unique and very pleasant.
Food and service was outstanding. Unique experience- would highly recommend
Food was good but nothing outstanding and certainly did not stand out. Customer service left much to be desired. I showed up 3 minutes before my reservation and they left us waiting outside in the rain stating they weren’t ready yet and we were early. We finally just went in (since it was past our reservation time and we were cold and wet. The staff seemed perturbed and one even commented “that’s what happens when you show up early.”
My absolute favorite restaurant - we had the most magical night here. The chef and staff were amazing, the food beautiful and delicious, we were so well taken care of. It was truly an unforgettably wonderful night.
The food was good but our clothes smelled badly from the kitchen not properly ventilated.
Update Open Table details on hours and Tasting Menu
This is such a fantastic dining experience! The chef went out of his way to make a dinner that met one of our diners special dietary needs. As always the food and attention to detail was superb!
Outstanding! These guys really take their craft and love of food seriously and it clearly shows in every dish. Well done!
Service is outstanding and the staff is knowledgeable about cuisine and wine. Highly recommend the wine paring with the tasting menu.
Kind of ehh. The food was beautifully presented, but most of the flavors were not very exciting for my palate. There was a lovely octopus dish, and a nice squash with duck dish. I cannot recall any other dishes that I found notable. The wine pairings were not a good value, and I should have taken my wife's advice and just poured a glass from the bottle she ordered. The sparkling wine they started with the oysters almost ruined the oysters. What is wrong with a nice Sancerre with oysters? I wish I hadn't eaten the desserts - they were not worth it.
One of the best restaurants in Portland. The wine pairing is spot on with wines from small vineyards throughout Italy. The pairs do mean you will be drinking quite a bit of wine. A real pleasant surprise was the bar next door. It's called Nonna and is owned by DOC. their bartender/mixologist made a fantastic champagne cocktail.
We arrived at the time of our reservation and were sent next door by the chef. He explained they weren't quite ready and told us to go get a drink and they woul come get us shortly. We went and got a drink and waited. And waited. When we were offered another drink we reminded them we were waiting to go next door. After some scrambling, someone from DOC came to get us and asked if we had a reservation. Yes. She said So sorry! We forgot to come for you! We were offered free drinks by Nonna and lead to DOC where everyone was 30 minutes into dinner service. We were then rushed into catching up and certainly didn't get the full experience. The chef never came to apologize for forgetting us. So odd. As the dinner was completed, and we paid (no discount offered)...the waitress grabbed us and gave us our bill for the drinks from next door. They had decided not to come the drinks afterall. So we paid. And left. And they lost two patrons. We came home to an email scolding us for missing our reservation. Explaining how that hurts restaurants, etc. Hey, DOC, we were there!!!!
So we came in knowing nothing and left with our mind's blown. It was our engagement dinner. The staff were over the top friendly and knowledgeable. The chef's food was unutterably amazing and paired perfectly with wines that you can't find anywhere. I can't recommend DOC enough. It's totally spendy, but you get your money's worth for sure, if you want a unique, outstanding and memorable experience.
Very Creative thought provoking Cooking. Yet where is the heart with the brilliant mind. Entering is like grandmas off the beaten path in rural Italia. I didn't expect to receive a dining room of high toned hipster. It was more cold and stingy. This may have been our mistake. We were seeking charming sophisticated warmth which this had none of.
$12 for bread... who needs that much bread anyway. wasn't paying attention, yet at $100/person maybe consider little touches that make us feel appreciated. Include the bread fee into the price when spending this much, Serve pastas hot. Dim the lights a bit at 8:30 on a cozy rainy night. Out with the 1980s Depeche Mode Music.
Since its decided to charge a health and wellness fee, present the check verbally acknowledging this. Not a good business practice when not paying attention to the details and then have to tip on top. This charge is still uncommon in PDX.
