Good food and quick, kind service
Everything was terrible!
Last month we had had a less than great experience at Dobbs Ferry during "restaurant week" or some such, where the restaurant was serving 3 courses during this special event.
It felt like they were in over their heads, didn't pull it off, and the service suffered. (At one point 4 of us had 8 plates on a table much too small to accommodate them!)
I'm happy to report that we returned last Saturday night for a significantly better experience.
The food was perhaps the best we have had there...the service was relaxed and efficient.
Enjoyed this pre-symphony dinner. Food was very tasty - scallops on pureed beet, the friend chicken, break pudding. I would have enjoyed one or more scallops than the 3 served!

We were seated next to a loud large group, and we couldn’t hear other people at our own table.
Service was indifferent and food was unremarkable.

Two of us ordered five plates. The dishes were pushed out of the kitchen so fast that we were served everything in 25 minutes. Some of the food was lukewarm and should have been hot. Mostly the drinks and dishes were forgettable.
everything was great minus the fact that the host said they didn’t have my reservation for a party of 8 on a sunday brunch. i even showed him the email confirmation. i was about to get upset but they luckily were able to seat us shortly after without the reservation. i emailed opentable regarding this miscommunication. they also didn’t have bottomless mimosas because i guess the delivery guy never showed up? major bummer for my birthday brunch. also, there were a lot of gnats flying around in the back room.
Service good. Energized crowd. Looked like good cocktails. Food was fair. Best part of meal was biscuits.
Service could use improvement
We live in Marin and Dobbs Ferry has been a favorite place for us to go before attending the SF Ballet on Friday evening. We go early, so we can enjoy a leisurely dinner with a glass of wine. The staff has always been attentive and it's nice to be remembered as season regulars. I had an appetizer with two nice pieces of Salmon on a skewer. It was cooked to perfection and was accompanied by a tasty sauce. For the main course, my husband had the Chicken Scarpariello, Mary's Chicken with Italian sausage, sweet peppers, peperoncini, cottage potatoes and vinegar-butter jus. The flavors were wonderful and chicken was tender. My main course was the Mushroom Salad, that was recommended by a diner sitting close to us. It consisted of Hedgehog and maitake mushrooms, bacon lardons, frisée, arugula, mustard vinaigrette - OMG I couldn't stop raving about it. Absolutely delightful. We are looking forward to going back for our next Ballet. We love Dobbs Ferry! Thank you!!
Reliably delicious food, friendly and efficient service, pleasant surroundings--a great choice before a show at the symphony or ballet. Occasionally even possible to walk in without a reservation.
Loved this place, came for a dinner with my parents and grandparents. They accommodated every generations needs - including lactose intolerances and pescatarians. One of the burgers was over cooked, but they did not charge us after we told the waitress. Would definitely come again, love this neighborhood too
Very good food before ballet - good portion size and overall good value.
The restaurant was freezing. We ordered a special pasta with lobster and shrimp. When it came there was no lobster nor shrimp. When we questioned the waiter, he said it was incorporated into the sauce. Not what we expected for $26
We had the bagel with smoked salmon. Also came with tomato and thinly sliced cucumber. Side of delicious fresh fruit salad. Everything tasted perfectly fresh. A+ for the food. Great spot for before the ballet. Get a reservation, though.
Dobbs Ferry is one of our favorite restaurants to have brunch before the ballet. Service was a little slow and seemed chaotic this time, not up to it's usually standard but we will definitely be back. Food was excellent; especially loved the pumpkin soup.
Dobbs Ferry never fails to please. We are regulars, and we always find something on the menu that we haven't seen before. Tonight my wife and I started with the warm castelveltrano olives, which we love; then we had a baby iceberg lettuce salad with blue cheese dressing, bacon bits, and radishes that was delightful. For the main course she had a special, cioppino, with scallops which she raved about; I had the burger: two 5oz beef patties, American cheese, red onions, shredded lettuce, dill pickles, 1,000 island dressing, with crisp fries and bacon bits. I am into burgers! These were just great.
Service was fine, we love the ambiance of the small and not noisy back room. Highly recommend Dobbs Ferry. Perfect for before SFSymphony or other event in the area.
The perfect pre-Symphony (SF Jazz or Nourse) event. The salads are outstanding and they make a delicious spaghetti and meatballs. Portions are sizable- which is a welcome change of pace for haute-y and often precious SF restaurants. Friendly staff. Not cheap but I recommend this place.
Dinner was fine, but with so many options in the neighborhood, we won't go back. It just wasn't anything special.
Perfect place for brunch or lunch before a concert. Staff was attentive, drink orders came immeidately and the food was excellent. Serice outstanding!

This is a very nice place to eat pre SF Symphony, Ballet or Opera. Food always very good and service is attentive. Not real fancy and a good value.

We dined here pre-symphony and have done so several times before. Under the new management the difference is night and day. The menu doesn't seem to have changed much, but the preparation has improved mightily. We had the short ribs and the mushroom ravioli and were delighted with the flavors. The sauces were beyond delicious and we asked for bread (only served on demand) so we could clean the last bits off both plates.
The service was personable and attentive with a light touch. A-Plus. I also found the wine list reasonably diverse and fairly priced. Give it a try, particularly if you've been there before and were underimpressed.
So pleased cioppino was the special. Excellent scallops: mussels and shrimp. Great dinner spot before ballet, opera, or symphony.
Excellent experience at Dobbs Ferry this afternoon, even coming in with and hour left of bottomless mimosas! Our food was cooked spectacularly, drinks were always 1/2 full and service was just incredible. We felt that we could have sat there all afternoon and not been a bother!
My wife and I went before the symphony and were not disappointed. The food is even better under the new owner. Pate appetizer was a light and smooth texture, perfect on toasts, terrific! Our main course was Cioppino with scallops, shrimp and hake in a vegetable broth. Also excellent. Wines by the glass were good and reasonably priced. - The service is was professional from beginning to end. When it looked like we were running low on bread, our waiter brought some without our having to ask. - We highly recommend Dobbs Ferry.
Great restaurant for pre-ballet lunch/brunch. Food is delicious. Great atmosphere. Will definitely return.
The food was excellent and very creative. The portions were generous and the service was timely. We cam here before a show and they made sure we had plenty of time to enjoy dinner without rushing us while making sure we had time to get to the theater without an issue.
We went for brunch before the symphony. The location is great for access. My husband had the salmon bagel and I had the mushroom omelet. Everything was fine and tasty. Easy to get in and out before the performance. Remember to make a reservation because the area is busy with all the performing arts nearby.
Chose this place from the list of restaurants participating in the Jan promo pricing. The service was very good (loved our waiter), but I was very disappointed in the food. The soup was bland and the veggie lasagna had little flavor as well. The high point was the burrata with toast. Unfortunately, I doubt I will return.
Probably my favorite place in the Hayes Valley - Civic Center area. Mostly because it isn't nearly as crazy expensive as most places in this neighborhood. Also because the menu has something for everyone - pasta and the usual CA-style surf & turf entrees. The scallops were great. The ambiance is relaxed and the food is quite good & the servings are ample. Last time I was there, I had the rice ball appetizer, house salad, pappardelle pasta, one glass of wine, and a cheesecake dessert; and the total bill was only $60!!
Location and ambience are excellent but the menu is quite unusual and I would have difficulty finding something that appeals if I ate here frequently
We were really looking forward to our meal here, but it was not what we expected. They have changed owners and apparently the cooks as well. We normally like the chicken dish, but it has been changed. The service was spotty. One good thing, I loss something down the seating and was very important to me. They were very helpful, knowing it was special. Probably won't be back.
A great and comfortable place, with caring service right in the heart of Hayes Valley, close to all music venues.
