dLeña is derived from the Spanish word “leña,” meaning firewood. The restaurant is centered around it’s wood-burning grill - a nod to the rustic open-fire cooking techniques of Mexico’s past.
The menu transports diners to Mexico through a multi-sensory experience in every bite of the signature smoked entrées, fresh ceviches, and unique sharing plates. The expansive bar features hand-crafted margaritas, Latin cocktails, cervezas and vino.

The server, Ellie, was as knowledgeable and kind as could be. We ordered an appetizer, entrees, and every dessert on the menu (to celebrate a birthday). While the menu was fairly limited, each menu item was exceptional. I look forward to dinner in Ellie’s section again!
Great scenery. A new restaurant that is here to stay in D.C. The food choice combined with the palette of wooden-beige furniture is fantastic. The service was great as well. And the downstairs lounge area gives a soothing poetry slam vibe. 5 stars all around!
AMAZING. The hype, the wait to get a reservation— ALL WORTH IT. Had the pork shank special and spare rib entree and it was incredible. Ellie was our incredible waitress, truly phenomenal.
The food and service were outstanding. I’d highly recommend this restaurant and would go back any day!
Everything was lovely! The staff, food, drinks and atmosphere. Definitely will visit this place again!
The food was delicious (tuna tacos especially) and the cocktails were quite good as well. Be sure the check out the speakeasy in the basement while you're there for a drink to start or end your meal. Can't wait to go back!
Had a great experience here. Everything was really fresh and tasted great. Definitely want to go back and try more menu items. And the aesthetics inside are giving grown and sexy vibes. There’s also a lounge in the basement which I didn’t know about. It’s more centered on drinks and smaller plates down there, but a very cute space worth checking out before or after dinner. And they also do live music down there later in the week.
Everything was fine until the main entree came out! We ordered the Ribeye, they dropped it on our table with no clean plates or steak knives. We had to flag someone down bc the waitress was no where to be found. When we were ready for another round of drinks we had to flag our waitress down bc she wasn’t paying attention. Finally when ready for our tab we waited over 10 min just to get it and than when we were ready to pay she took another 10-15 min to collect it! If service was better I would most definitely return bc everything else was great! What a shame!
Food was fine, but overall service did not match reputation of Chef Sandoval’s restaurants, where we have dined in the past and experienced a much better experience.
Great atmosphere/date night option, very pricey, more like a spiff on Mexican cuisine (not traditional). Great meat options. Favorites: papas al horno & short rib al carbon.
I was looking forward to dining at Dlena since its opening, but I was a bit disappointed with our first experience here. It seems there is more effort placed on restaurant & food appearance vs flavor & taste. For example, the serrano infused cocktail wasn't spicy at all. The guacamole & queso was fresh, but nothing special or memorable about it. I also have Celiac Disease (gluten free) and there was a lot of confusion with the wait staff and servers about what is/is not gluten free (even though gluten free items are labeled on the menu). For example, the waiter said items were gluten free that were not, and I had to correct him. Also, when the server dropped off the guacamole with questionable chips, I asked if they were gluten free and he said no, then switched to yes, then switched back to no and finally landed on yes. Needless to say, with the lack of confidence in gluten free and OK food/drink, I'm not sure I'd visit again or recommend.
With the kitchen cooking with actual wood, the restaurant itself was extremely hot making it uncomfortable at points. But overall, Dleña was great.
We came here for our anniversary and it did not disappoint! The food was absolutely phenomenal and so well prepared and very unique! The service was also amazing and the decor was a beautiful touch to a phenomenal dinner!
The food was delicious. My husband and I took a friend for her birthday. I got the chicken, my girlfriend got the branzino and my husband got the 14oz. Ribeye. Each of us thoroughly enjoyed our selections but ribeye was the best. We will definitely be going back.
Everything was delicious! The street corn and tacos were our favorites.
Our server McKenzie was amazing and went above and beyond to make me feel special on my birthday!
This was my 3rd visit and I was extremely disappointed with the service. Our server was beyond inattentive even though I tried to tell her it was my bf birthday and it was their first time at the restaurant so you can imagine his disappointment. She barely checked in on us, did not clean the table, we waited to get her attention. Table was tiny in the middle of others even though I made the reservation 3-4 weeks in advance specifying it was for a birthday. When I checked in, we were sat int he main area by the bar somewhat noisy and less intimate for the occasion. I was told that's what was available but that was not the case, there were other tables available in the side (quieter area). While the food is great, I have come to the conclusion this is the worse place to go for an occasion especially with the crappy service. She still got her 20% but it's left a bad taste in my mouth.
Amazing experience ! We sat at the chefs table and loved the food, drink, and ambiance
Spoke very highly of this restaurant to my friends because I had a lovely experience my first time here. Last night was not so lovely. Our server wasn’t welcoming AT ALL!!! in fact it seemed as if we were bothering him. Our ribeye was over cooked, and no manager ever touched the table. The experience was not anything like my first experience. Food was good outside of the overcooked steak. I wish the service matched the lovely restaurant.
Met business friends here and is was an amazing experience. The food was full of flavor, presented in a visually appealing way, and the server knew the menu by way of tasting/eating experience! Would def return for a date night or girls night out. Will recommend as well. Save room for dessert; you’ll want to try of everything.
Great new date night experience. Ambiance and food left a great impression which will certainly ensure another trip back
Food was very delicious!! Presentation and wait staff were impeccable! Will definitely revisit!
Absolutely amazing food and service! I will definitely be returning!
Food was just meh. When you’re paying the high cost this place charges the food should be fantastic. I ordered the shrimp tacos that are overly fried and have one shrimp for each tiny tacos, which are not even on tortillas. For $18 you should get more than three pieces of flavorless, over-fried shrimp. The queso was OK. The flavor was overpowered by the fire grill taste. Service was horrible. It wasn’t even busy and we had to ask for more water several times and were never checked on. Overall, this is an overhyped Tik-Tok/Instagram spot. Don’t waste your time & go to one of the hundred other spots in DC.
Amazing place! Love the ambiance, the food and all the tequila and mezcal drinks
I loved discovering DLena! The drinks were incredible - especially the hibiscus margarita. The food was great too. The bar downstairs has an amazing speakeasy vibe and live music.
Waited for 15 mins for someone to come to the table. 3 couples seated next to us were seated and served cocktails immediately. I had to flag someone down to find someone to serve me
Ambience and food is amazing. Also, COVID restrictions were followed and felt safe.
Great environment and food, we will be back!
Absolutely one of the best restaurants in DC - from service to food to ambiance!
My fiancé and I had an amazing time with our friends to celebrate his birthday! The waiter and waitress were very accommodating and the hostess were pleasant as well. I would definitely recommend!
DLena has been amazing every time we have been here. There is a fabulous speak easy in the basement. Happy hour is a must and the bottomless brunch is delicious.
Everything was great. The server was extremely friendly and welcoming and was on top of it all. The brunch was an all you can eat small plate experience and we were able to sample everything on the menu. The quality of the ingredients and the well designed tastes all made for a fabulous meal.
I would recommend it to anyone that asks
We absolutely loved our experience here! The atmosphere created by the architecture, the smell of the woodfire, and the service was outstanding. Food was also very good. Be sure to stop downstairs for a drink at the cozy bar for either a pre- or post-dinner drink.
Great food with a great ambiance! Would highly recommend going for brunch.
It was amazing!! Really nice vibe
There are very few restaurants the cook and provide a steak as flavorful as dLeña! My family really enjoy. It's such a great environment in there and our server was on point and very attentive!
I loved the oysters and the ambiance, drinks, and ambiance were amazing!
Delicious food! A little pricey but overall worth it. Beautiful space
I arrived and I was originally sat at the worst table in the place. I moved without any problems. I ordered a margarita because I love to try the basic one at every Mexican restaurant I go to. It was bland and flavorless. My friend and I then ordered flights of tequila, they were pretty good and I appreciated the orange slices, lime wedges and two salts they provided. The Bloody Mary mix as a palate cleanser wasn’t the best though. The food was fabulous!!! We got queso fundido, grilled oysters, and short rib tacos. I will definitely be going back to try out some more tacos. Service was slow but to be expected in these covid times
