This is a neighborhood gem. I have been driving past this location for years on my way to work or downtown. I finally tried it with a friend. It had a cozy, comfortable atmosphere, inviting bar, and the food did not disappoint. Seasonal menu, some italian mediterranean influence, but lots of small plate/appetizer options, interesting combinations. The food we each had was delicious, service was friendly and timely. And it didn't break the wallet. What was I waiting for to try The District Kitchen?
Glad we ate here while visiting DC. My daughter was disappointed that the salad dressing choices were limited, and a steak was a little more done than ordered, but we all very much enjoyed the meal. My father had paella for the first time and really enjoyed it!
I found this restaurant on open table while attending a conference around the corner at the Omni. It is a short walk in a nice neighborhood surrounded by other bars/restaurants.The ambiance is great, it feels cozy without being overcrowded. I had the NY strip and it was cooked perfectly medium rare; a great compliment for the Malbec that was a steal at $9/glass. My dinner companion had the daily fish, a delicious flounder. But the brusselsprouts- OMG the brusselsprouts- just order them, you won't regret it.
We finished dinner with a thick, fluffy, non-too-sweet creme brulee of my dreams
Loved the vibe, space, menu. Excellent service, a bit hands-off to allow old friends to catch up. Huge portions, a great combination of unique flavors in comfort-food presentation. My main complaint was the noise - this was not a good place for the intense conversation we tried to maintain. I left with a headache and sore throat from having to talk so loud to converse over the noise. I’d love to return, but would prefer an off-time when it isn’t so noisy.
Not bad neighborhood restaurant, decent food, ok value. Dining room in need of upgrade however, looked run down which hurts the ambience.
Excellent location only 4 blocks south and opposite the National Zoo Connecticut Ave entrance. Reservations are suggested. Varied menu and prices seemingly better than other DC restaurants. The service was spotty and that may have been because they weren't busy and we were forgotten. Outdoor dining available and parking is a challenge. You can't go wrong.
Love the half sizes entrees, because it allowed us to sample more options. The scallops seafood special was delicious! I also suggest a cocktail and to save room for dessert; the tiramisu and apple-fig bread pudding were both delicious!
We had an early dinner here and were quite surprised at the interesting menu and the quality of
the service. The cute umbrellas provided shade from the setting sun, and still allowed us to indulge
in people watching the pedestrian traffic. All in all a neighborhood gem.
Everyone in our party of six was pleased with the quality of the food and service. Reasonably priced. We went for Sunday brunch and never felt rushed.
Inside is a little sparse and deceiving. One would not expect the quality of food that is prepared here. The August soup special, tomato basil was delicious. Two of six ordered it and insisted everyone else at the table take a taste. The salmon was light and a flakey and served with a light tomato broth of fava beans and other minced veggies. Excellent
The server left us for 30 minutes at a time to go flirt with the underage hostess. It was rather repulsive. We finally asked another server if we could get another round of drinks and he brought them right away.
Great selection of food for healthy and diet restrictive individuals. Visited this restaurant twice in 2 days while staying in DC. Would highly recommend! The sangria and mojito were fabulous! Don’t miss this one!
Best burgers ever! We had the mac and cheese and bread and dipping sauce appetizers, SO GOOD. Then came the dry aged burgers. Whatever they do to them, they aren't kidding. My husband said the burger is one of the best he's ever had. Plus the staff was super friendly throughout the meal. The restaurant itself was super nice inside with brick walls and bar seating. If we weren't visiting from CT we would 100% go back. As it is, if we are in DC again we will be back!
Great brunch! Reasonably priced and good food. Would definitely go back!
Food was great and the ambiance was laid back and casual. Service was a bit slow though, and there seemed to be confusion and a long delay when we asked to split our check.
Amazing food as always, for dinner or brunch. Highly recommend making reservations.
Place was great, but super loud
Ngozi, their lovely hostess, and Olivia, their upbeat server, were the service highlights for us (we visited 3x while in town). The unbelievably delicious options had me craving another meal every time I left. Favorites were the chicken tikka, their special wild scallops dish with brocollini, sweet potato purée - one night we ordered Mac and cheese (yum!!!) as well as one of every vegetable and I was not disappointed. I preferred dining outside because inside is too loud for my taste but cool decor.
Good food, friendly and competent service, Metro convenient. It is way too noisy for conversation.
Met some friends visiting from out of town with their kids. A little noisy so we had trouble catching up, and a little cramped-- a family came in with a stroller and had trouble getting past our table to theirs. The smoked salmon eggs benedict was plated strangely, but still tasted good. Was a little awkward to eat though. Overall the meal was good, but I'm not sure I'll be back.
Great street for outdoor eating. Food was very good. I’d definitely go back.
Food was good, but we were lucky there was a table outside. Inside was way too loud for conversation, although the restaurant wasn't full. Service was slow and our tea was not refilled. On the plus side, the food was good and we sat for a very long time (meeting relatives for the first time) without being hurried away. Would have preferred to have a lunch rather than a brunch menu at 2 p.m.
The food was outstanding -- i wasn't familiar with the restaurant so my expectations weren't high going in, but the food was truly top-notch and the owner and many of the servers were extremely helpful although one of the servers was less so. My one real pause, though, is that the inside portion of the restaurant was EXTREMELY loud -- it was 9 pm on a Friday night, so i expected some noise but it was difficult to hear my husband who was sitting across from me at a two-top when we only had people on one side of us. It was rainy so we couldn't sit outside but the patio would have been much better from a noise perspective.
Delicious tikki chicken and grilled broccoli! Would be ideal if happy hour drink prices counted for dining and the bar.
Dinner for 3. Service was fair. Food was OK for 2 of us but my paella lacked depth and the sausage used was marginal. Then wait staff cleared a plate that had my bread without asking. When brought to the attention of the waiter a resupply arrived but after I had finished.
Delicious food. Due to its popularity and the rain, there was a big crowd inside which got too noisy. Otherwise it was a five star experience for this type of restaurant
Everything was delicious - everything! I love how they offer small plates and half portions so that you can try more things. Lots of inventive combinations packed with flavor at a very reasonable price.
Fresh local ingredients, great recipes and talented chef. A hidden gem tucked into businesses adjoining a Red Line stop for the Zoo.
Excellent food, services was a tad slow but tolerable. Pork Belly LT Sandwich a must!
The food here is so incredibly well-balanced. I got the pan seared shrimp with anduille sausage. It was amazing. In fact it was so good I convinced a guy looking at the menu to get it for himself to go! (Pitfalls of traveling alone and sitting at the bar).
While the noise level is high, it's a great atmosphere capped off by an incredible staff.
Let me highlight for you HOW incredible. I sat next to a woman who I later found out was legally blind. The waiter read the menu to her, took the time to listen and repeat things. Placed items in front of her telling her what they were AND when she paid, he counted out her change in groups. "Here is your $10, this is your $5 and here are 4 singles. ". He was just one of the patient, kind and people-oriented servers I experienced. Muchike the bartender, seeing I was alone, struck up conversation in between service.
I don't think I've ever been to a nicer place.
Seemed to be short-staffed. Mixed up a couple of orders. Extremely friendly staff. I would definitely go back.
This place has decent food but it is insufferably noisy— don’t go if you want to chat with your dinner guests. Service was excellent. Ambiance is dingy.
The food and bottomless mimosas were wonderful! Great price for a full plate, but the service left much to be desired. Our waiter got our order wrong (we both got the same thing), but had the corrected plates to us in under five minutes. The waiter was friendly, but seemed to forget about us often and we had to flag down another waitress for help, several times. Overall not a bad experience, but would’ve liked better service.
Hard surfaces inside bounced and magnified noise so the room was loud and difficult for the three of us to talk at our table. The creative cocktails were delicious (loved the Bee's Kiss) while the food is okay. The roasted chicken tikka was a generous portion but bland, needing more seasoning and more raisins in the mix. The flat iron steak frites came with excellent French fries, but a chunk of the steak was tough to chew. The cool and creamy tiramisu was large enough to share among three and nicely presented, but it could use a smidge more coffee flavor and the sponge cake was almost indiscernible. Friendly and helpful staff.
While it was a bit too noisy for the meeting we had planned, we realized that we needed to go have our meeting later in a quiet place. District Kitchen is all about the food, and I think everyone in our group really loved the delicious meal they were served. I had individual members of our part tell me how much they loved the food. In fact several people returned in the days after with friends for another meal. Thanks again for a great dinner!
Very pleasant meal. All three of us enjoyed our meals. Portions were reasonably sized and appropriately priced.
Wonderful food and experience.
Nice salmon eggs benedicts.
The place was good- the serving staff seemed distracted... very difficult to order drinks, get the bill, etc... it’s not that big of a place- so I was a little surprised. Food was good
I was most impressed with this restaurant! We sat at the bar and the bartender was wonderful. Very creative drink menu and the drinks were excellent. Food was wonderful and the entire staff works together to insure the best service and customer experience. I highly recommend District Kitchen! Try it and see for yourself what a gem this place is on Connecticut Ave.
