I had the shrimp and grits which unexpectedly I found was super-delicious. Two friends had the fish of the day and were disappointed the pan-fried trout arrived totally unadorned. Nothing but the filet. Think the waiter might have mentioned at the outset it came with nothing - no starch, no vegetable. Despite Yelp saying the noise level is average, it definitely is very loud if the place is full which it often is at dinnertime. When it empties out some, the noise level is tolerable. But I get that some patrons don't mind a loud ambience; in fact, they like a packed, noisy place. Despite the noise level, I enjoyed our first outing there.
This restaurant is my boss's go-to place for a business lunch...never actually eaten there myself!
Steak was cooked completely opposite of what was ordered. Resulted in me watching my guest eat and then they had the joy of watching me eat. Something you don’t go to a restaurant for...taking turns eating and watching one guest at a time eat his meal. Particularly at the price point you pay. You expect more if you pay more... and food you can’t eat isn’t one of them.
Perfect experience for a low-key interview lunch, especially because we got the round table in the back.
We came early and it was not crowded when left it was crowded. The food was very good. I will go back.
Birthday celebration- good food.
Had a lovely family dinner. Recommend the crab cakes and mashed potato side. Dinner for 3 with no dessert and one drink was $97
Nice varied menu with something for everyone as well as an extensive wine by the glass and beer menu. Pleasant setting, and attractive dining room but the service was awful. The waiters/ waitresses take your orders but a series of rude and disaffected runners literally throw the food at you and seemed annoyed should you make any requests of them.
Asked for a quiet table....noise level still outrageously loud. Voices, plates being noisily stacked.
Inattentive service...ordered appetizer pretzel baguette with mustard and butter. Bread and butter literally "dropped" onto the table. Had to get the attention of another waiter for the mustard...a 5 minute wait.
Entrees merely adequate.
I dined at District Commons on Thursday, April 12. The food and service was fine, as always. But they need to do safety checks on all chairs. The leg of my chair snapped during my meal and I landed on the floor and am still in some pain from it. While they took my information that night and professionally handled the situation, there was no follow up as promised.
We had a great booth in the back -- basically a private room. Our server, Cheryl, was outstanding. Would definitely go back.
It is a nice restaurant with good food and good wine. We were seating in an area at the back so that was not noisy.
We were unsure what to expect for this place -- we just knew we wanted a place for a decently good dinner before a show at the Kennedy Center. It was a rare date night to celebrate our anniversary and it exceeded our expectations. We came hungry and I have to say this is one of the few places we have been lately (of this price range) where we left FULL. We ordered the pretzel baguette with mustard butter -- worth the $3! We had the southwestern flatbread for an ap -- not something I usually would order but it was FANTASTIC. We both got the special - double crab cake and choice of a side which was quite good and filling. Crab cake indeed had no filling, though it did have more shell than I prefer -- still, it was delish. The sweet potato/wild rice was yum as were the Brussel sprouts. We then got the Boston cream pie -- man that caramel sauce is fantastic. Even the cocktail was worth the $10. The service was friendly and food came out in a timely fashion and consistently. This place is a breath of fresh air and a full belly. Bravo.
I think this place is underrated. Everyone fights to get a reservation down the street at Founding Farmers but I think they are missing out a bit. District Commons is a good size place, the atmosphere is pleasant. You can find something you like on the menu and there are plenty of drink options. The staff is attentive.
We had a great brunch experience at District Commons! We were celebrating our one year anniversary and they made it extra special for us. It was a packed restaurant, fun atmosphere, and great bottomless mimosas! Would definitely recommend for a good time no matter who you’re with.
Can’t wait to come back!
This was my first time at District Commons and the experience was great! The food was good and a great value for your buck. I would definitely recommend their Brunch on the weekends!
Nice spot. Very loud. Food was very good. Service was mediocre.
We were seated at 8:00. We got our food at about 9:15. The restaurant was busy, but not that busy. At the end of the meal, the server dropped off our check and disappeared -- I had to go find him to give him my CC and the check, and then went to the restroom (which it shares with BTS, next door) before leaving. The restroom was trashed. I told our server about the disgusting restroom, and he thanked me for informing him, but explained "Well, we share that with BTS, and it can get messy on the weekends." Yeah, not sure I'll be back anytime soon. Too bad, because the food was good.
First time in Washington DC and had made a reservation Sat Morning with little notice. Walking distance from hotel. Great raw bar, great bar. Food was good and staff was friendly. Very noisy so not a good spot for conversation but when your with a large crowd, it works. Would definitely return next time I am in Washington.
Nice place. But servers are clearly struggling with how the place is staffed. They work on the edge of being able to get it all done, so any perturbation to service rhythms makes it impossible for them to meet diners’ needs. But the food is good...
Great service and almost perfect food
Fast for lunch but not a lot of love in the food.
We went to District Commons for Easter dinner - three of us - and had a delightful meal. The menu selections were excellent, as were the wine and beer choices were vast. Service was beyond excellent, the staff were very friendly and looked after after us very well. Highly recommend a visit here .
Family went for brunch. Very good for the reasonable price!
We had a fantastic meal here. The ambiant noise was quite loud, and the tables were fairly close together so I felt as if I was shouting my conversation at the next table. Otherwise, the service was pretty good and the experience was positive.
Two people in our party are vegetarians and they felt they had an adequate selection of choices. The food was delicious and the service was friendly and efficient. We look forward to dining here again when we are in Washington.
We had a wonderful time! Food is great especially the shrimp and grits. Service was wonderful.
Really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Service seemed slow at times, and we had a party of seven and ended up waiting for all the salads to be served, and then waited again for all the entrees to be served. In essence, kitchen and serving staff a bit out of sync. I'd go again as the food was excellent and reasonably priced
If you love shrimp and grits, then make sure you order them here! The amount of food is over the top!
I went here with a few friends for Sunday brunch. We decided to go with the entree and mimosa special. Our server was very attentive although I would have appreciated just as many water refills as we got mimosa refills. There were also other members of the restaurant staff that checked in on us which was really appreciated!
The disappointing thing was the portions of the food. My friend got the steak brunch and the piece of protein was so small she was very disappointed in "splurging". I got the juevos rancheros which were so soupy that I asked for a spoon. They tasted good, but it was just weird.
There was nothing bad about the place, but they're are so many other great finds in DC I definitely won't be coming back.
Overall, we felt that our meal was overpriced for the portions we were given. The yogurt parfait in particular was such a small amount for the price paid. Also, while we were seated at a window table, our view was blocked by a stack of patio chairs. We also felt a little neglected because we were a little ways away from other tables and didn’t always get our refills in a timely fashion.
Amazing! Came from New York and absolutely loved everything. Food was to die for and the service was superb. I’m recommending any of my friends who visit to come here. Go here!
Our entrees were served warm, not hot and salty. Our friend had stated ahead of time that please cook her salmon so it was well done and she had to return it for cooking time. Our cocktails did not quite live up the description, they were tart.
Three friends an I had dinner here on Saturday evening. This is my fifth or sixth visit to this restaurant for lunch or dinner and it is consistently very good. The menu is interesting, food tasty and service very good. It is a good pre-Kennedy-Center place for dinner.
We were there on a Friday evening, so it was quite noisy toward the front near the bar. We sat in the rear and could enjoy a normal conversation. The waiter, Michael, was excellent, as was every item that we ordered. They easily switched out the side dishes. Food arrived quickly and was hot. Price was reasonable. Overall we both enjoyed everything about the experience. Will definitely go again, and have recommended it to others. We chose it because it was near the Kenedy Center, and after arriving around 6 PM at the restaurant, we had plenty of time to make it to our seats well before curtain.
Fun place to meet and eat. Lively atmosphere, big and spacious. Lots of beers, wines, cocktails to choose from. Starters and appetizers (pretzel baguette, turnovers) good. Entree I chose -- seafood Cobb salad-- could have been tastier. Others at my table liked their entrees (duck, pork). Good brownie sundae!
As my mother would say: “I’ll come to this place twice. Once and never again.”
Was there for a business lunch with a friend. I had the crab cakes which were pretty good -- not too much breading, which is the downfall of many a crab cake. Service was good and the coffee was hot. Great place for lunch.
A very nice restaurant. My wife had a seafood salad Which she liked; my cousin had a steak salad which she liked; and I had a “pig board.“ I liked that as well. My only complaint is that it’s way too noisy. I guess it’s because it has all those hard surfaces, because he wasn’t so crowded. The restaurant should definitely make efforts to make the place quieter. I’ve heard that restaurants want to have a noisy Ambience because it suggests fun and liveliness But for many it’s just an annoyance.
