District 36 Wine Bar & Grille
District 36 has a nice patio setting for outdoor dining in good weather. It would be nice to see a bit more variety on the menu - especially in the appetizer/soup category.
District 36 is absolutely my favorite for lunch or dinner. Every server I have had is knowledgeable about the menu and very accommodating. The food and presentation are awesome! Never an embarrassment to bring friends who have never been to District 36. I know the food will be fresh and delicious. Thank you, thank you!
Back room lacks ambience. Hot app (Kung Pao calamari best thing we had) was served but we were not given plates. Finally got up to ask someone and was told that there were not any plates available! They were being washed. Weird. Finally got plates but unfortunately my side salad was then served on a warm plate! It is all in the details!!
Wonderful food and atmosphere
Food and service was good but the four of us set in a booth and the noise level was so loud that
you could only convese with the person next to you and not across the table. So every person in the place had to speak loud so that made it worse.
Previously we enjoyed a lunch where the noise level was acceptable and we would recommend that, but not an evening outing.
Great food and nice place to gather with friends. I would recommend this restaurant to my friends.
Food was below par. Prime rib special was a very tough cut of meat. Chicken Brussels, Brussel sprouts not cooked properly, unable to eat.
First time visit and we were very pleased with everything
Nice place to eat, service was excellent. Food was good but didn't blow my wife and I away. Drinks menu was somewhat limited.
1st visit! Nice surprise! Been going to another seafood place nearby for years, thought we'd try District 36. Lobster stuffed devil eggs = fantastic!; seafood bisque = extremely tasty! Salmon BLT - wonderful, couldn't finish all, took 1/2 home, salmon was seasoned well, thick, good; Frutti Di Mare Pasta was excellent tasting! Dessert Candy Bar Pie = all good, great oreo crust! Service excellent, server extremely •Knowledgeable about the menu, appreciated his suggestions. Will definitely return next time in town.
This was our 3rd visit to the restaurant. Food is very good. My husband LOVES the house bisque. Really good service. Like the idea of being able to make reservations. Anxious to be able to enjoy the patio....
Disappointing this time around. Food and service.
The menu doesn't have alot of dairy free options. My friend found 1 (ribs). I ordered the tilapia with cooked spinach and the spinach was way over cooked. The drinks were good. The menu is just slim pickings if you aren't a seafood person.
Wasn't the atmosphere I was expecting a wine bar, more of a bar and grill feel. Waitress was very nice but had zero knowledge of wine. Food was great.
This was my second meal here. First was a grouper dish that I did not like. This time my husband and I both ordered filet and both filets were tough. We are used to filet being easy to eat, not a tough piece of meat. Salad, onion strings, shrimp, and baked potatoes were all good. The service and ambience were both good. We feel the price of the filet definitely wasn't worth the price.
Appetizers and wine were very good as well as the atmosphere. However, the 3 main courses my table tried were over seasoned, cold, reconstituted, and not very good for the price. I had the $20 Alaskan salmon, with asparagus and ratatouille. The asparagus was super salty, the ratatouille was bland and runny, and the salmon was overcooked and way over seasoned. My table compatriots and I will only return for wine and apps from now on.
Our waiter was very knowledgeable and helpful with the menu. He had phenomenal service skills as well (quick to fill drinks, clearing plates, asking if we needed anything, very polite). The food was great and you can make your dinner as expensive or inexpensive as you'd like based off of what you order off the menu. Highly recommend it to my friends.
We were very impressed with this restaurant. The menu was much better than a typical pub menu with some creativity and the quality was very good. The service was excellent as well and the ambiance was great.
The seafood bisque and steak veggie soup were both excellent. Bravo! Neither of my friends had eaten here before and both were duly impressed. Nice "sit-down" gem in Ankeny! Our server was attentive and we appreciated not being rushed. Glad to have such a great place available for lunch and dinner.
Exceptional service,Great Food,Ambiance Pleasant,Great Location and outdoor seating and viewing!
One of our favorite places for lunch. Lots of great options. I had my usual, the 2 taco lunch. I have a different combination every time because they are all very, very good. Today it was steak and chicken. My dinner companions had the Chicken De Burgos. She raved about it. The other 2 diners had the Cajun Pasta. It didn't take the very long for them to completely finish it. I know it is a wine bar...but they make a good Old Fashion.
Great place to eat!
The food was very good!
Great food and nice warm cozy atmosphere. Also has a really nice patio. Love this place
Very nice atmosphere , plus the young lady I was with has a beautiful smile. Topping the evening .
Everything from the time we sat down to the end we had fabulous service. The wait staff was on top of everything. Appetizers were good. We had the Walleye. I thought the size of the fish was small for the price. Also, we've had better Walleye at other restaurants. Not saying this was bad but just had better. I would visit again to try the Rib-eye. The Chocolate Martini's were good too. We were seated in the bar area where it would have been nice to sit in the other room. We felt a little like being at Applebees. Lighting was a little dim. We would like to visit again in the summer when we can eat out on the patio and view the lake.
We live Ames and we were looking for a place to eat near DSM. Found this gem. Calamari app is awesome. All meals were enjoyed by our group. Highly recommend.
Food was delish! Calamari, crab cakes, brussel sprouts, seafood pasta. Thomas was our waiter and did a fantastic job with service and recommendations. He asked several times how everything was, very attentive! I definitely recommend and I will be going back.
Good beer selection. Good food with good portions. Good service. Definitely be back.
Menu is FANTASTIC! Great food + drinks. You get awesome value for your money. Atmosphere that isn't big box, so isn't insanely loud. Perfect for dates, special occasion, or any meal. Like that you can make reservations online. Great location in the new hot spot in Ankeny.
Easily now the best restaurant in Ankeny!! We love this place!!!
Went for a girls's evening out and wasn't disappointed. Fantastic wine and food selection, lovely atmosphere and wonderful staff!
The food was excellent and the atmosphere was very nice. Great experience for our family!
Dined with friends for dinner. Enjoyed atmosphere and selection of food. Came to table hot and servicecwas good and quietly refreshed drinks.
Warm atmosphere and very modern and nice. Good menu with lots of seafood. Food was decent and it was enjoyable.
Food was delicious, and our waitress was friendly, but rushed, as it was very busy. When our bill arrived, we noticed the prices we were charged were higher than what was stated on the menu!! Waitress talked to manager and said the lunch prices had been printed on the dinner menu! Really? Also, the bottle of wine we ordered was $6 less than what we were charged. She brought the correct wine, but charged us for a more expensive bottle. Our bill was adjusted in our favor, but I wonder how many other people just wouldn't notice and pay the extra price. This should have brought a visit to our table by management, with an apology. This is NOT the way to lure new customers to a new restaurant. The food was excellent, the physical space is lovely, and we will return, hopefully the bugs will be worked out by then!
We will give District 36 another chance but our first experience - not the best. Name wrong on reservation: Stephanie instead of Stephen. Only table available was high top in bar. Surprised when we made a reservation. Zach our server was engaging (love that) but struggled opening wine and was gone for long periods of time. He said there was a mix-up at a table (which happens) but could have been a better communicator about it. 1 minute after soup was set, main course arrived. Not good planning or execution. Pasta dish served was very average in taste and flavors. Three of us ordered and all felt the same. We will give it another try but our first experience was below average.
ENJOYED AND WILL RETURN - SERVICE AND CONVERSATION WAS A HIGHLIGHT!
The blackened salmon was delicious. The asparagus was wonderful. I would definitely order that meat again.
The food was outstanding and the drinks were great. Bar seating/service was very attentive and helpful. Our dining service however was extremely disappointing for such a place. Drinks were allowed to empty (both water and bar for the ENTIRE table - with no question from server if we wanted more). We had to ask for things more than once (second drink, and then again if it was still coming... bread, and water). Food seemed a bit delayed with no acknowledgement from server. Server generally not conversational or attentive. We will give it another try as we loved the food and are hopeful this was a one time incident or specific server issue - however feed back from others I have talked to seemed to have similar experiences. If this repeats itself, we will not be back a third time.
