We were very disappointed with the food. vegetables were served cold. The meet poorly cooked and when returned for the second time it was still poorly cooked. The salad was almost inedible. What was billed as potatoes au graten was under cooked potatoes swimming in a watery cream sauce.

I made reservations (with a credit card for deposit) days in advance of which the restaurant called to verify. The greeting was very nice. However once we ordered we were told that the restaurant was out of multiple entree’s. This was due to an event they had downstairs. A manager came to apologize and offered complimentary side dishes, however her intent fell short when the side dishes arrived 15 minutes after the meal. The shortage of food didn’t stop there. At dessert.... same thing, they were out of some of the desserts. This was not a cheep meal, nor was it intended to be. I do expect quality of food and service at this price point. I will never be back to this restaurant.

There was only one other party in the restaurant and yet they were out of a lot of things. They did not have many things on the menu, including some steaks. I find it odd that a steakhouse is out of many different steaks. Three times a person ordered a beer at our table only to be told that they have none left. What food we did order was excellent and the waitress was very apologetic but if I was to recommend this place, I would tell someone to call ahead of time to make sure they have food available!

Service was polite professional and courteous however, things did move a little slow. We were seated 40 minutes after reservation. We had asked multiple times for lemon and the courses came out at a very slow pace. No I understand it was a busy night but, we were One of the later reservations and the restaurant was clearing out by the time we were served. All in all a great experience though we will be back.

We could not talk or get caught up on our day due to constant interruptions by the staff. I was asked how my food was before I had taken a bite. I can’t tell you if it’s okay until I take a bite.

More than once we were brought a shared entree without any plates.

Way overpriced for what we got. $15.00 for a rose...really?

The most annoying was the constant interruptions. If you see people are having a discussion don’t walk up and interrupt. It’s rude!!

We probably won’t be back

We were greeted with a warm welcome and friendly smile. Seated on time. Our server was very helpful and explained everything to a T. We shared the Tomahawk steak which was cooked to perfection. Romantic atmosphere as well. Afterwards we had a cocktail at the bar. Bartenders Tyler and Brett were amazing and knowledgeable of fine wine and whiskey. Best time ever and we will be returning.

The valentine day prefix meal was ok and very over priced. The first meal was the lobster bisque that only had one lover piece and was luck warm. The scallops was raw and had some weird green sauce on them which was only one scallop that was finely sliced. The steak tartare was small and not that good as well. The third dish was a sorbet drink that was half full. The fourth meal was a steak that we had to share and we also had to share the side of mash potatoes. The desert were creme brulee and chocolate mousse cake that was just ok not the best way to end the night

The staff was very friendly and attentive. There was a few people at the bar but other than our table there was not a sole in site for a Friday evening at 7pm. The food was good except the fish was NOT. We were a larger party and three different fish items were ordered. All of them had an overly fishy taste. The server credited back one of the three. In general the appearance of the restaurant has not changed since it was previously Chops. My experience was so so at best. I will not be going back.

The dine out menu choices: the salad was gritty, the bisque was divine. the main dish of salmon was flavorful but less than 2 oz and the size of serving was 1 by 3-4 inches at most; the dessert on the menu said eclair with raspberries and ice cream. It was one 1 by 2 inch mini eclair with 1 raspberry and zero ice cream. I asked the server about the discrepancy. He dutifully went and asked. He came back to tell us there had been complaints about the ice cream so they chose to not provide it and not change the menu.
I will not return.

My husband and I decided to try this steakhouse for the dine downtown Sacramento week. First the waitress got my drink order wrong. Then we kept waiting for bread that did not come. We were served our lobster bisque and I asked where the bread was and the lady said we charge extra for it! I’ve never been to a steakhouse where they charge extra for bread. However it was worth the wait because the fresh bread was amazing to dip in the soup. I ordered the fillet mignon wrapped in bacon stuffed with asparagus and a side of potatoes. When the meal arrived I was shocked! The steak was so small it was the size of a Silverdollar and had only one piece of asparagus in it. Then the potatoes were two extra mini potatoes on the side. It barely met the requirements for potatoes! Lol I went home hungry! The dessert was a bite-size eclair cut in half cut in half, you could maybe savor it with two bites if you’re lucky! We went to five other restaurants for the dine downtown week and all the other portions at the restaurants were normal and even abundant compared to our experience here. I understand it was a special event but they should not have downsized their portions so much or we would’ve likely come back.

I really wanted to like The Diplomat. We went for my wife's birthday, which was supposed to be noted in the reservation but no mention was made of it. She asked specifically to go for her birthday and I had heard very good things but was, for the most part, underwhelmed. The food was good, not great. For a steakhouse, my steak was overcooked and under seasoned but the type of place not to provide seasoning for the table. The soup was the star of the show, just a large bowl of the lobster bisque with some good bread would have been a fine meal. The dessert was an eclair the size of my thumb, the likes of which I could and have bought at Costco and frankly, the Costco one was better. I'm glad we ate there during Dine Downtown week, as the meal cost considerably less than their normal prices, but I would expect this to be a special event for them to shine and entice me back on a regular night. Instead, it felt like they were participating because they had to, not because they wanted to. Service was adequate, though rushed, like they really wanted to turn the table, despite being barely half full. All in all, I wouldn't return and with the amazing variety of restaurants available Down/Midtown, for the money, I would recommend just about anywhere else.

The food was very good, but the portion size was quite small. The restaraunt itself is beautiful, my wife loved the ‘living wall’ of moss. The service for a high end restaraunt wasn’t up to par, it was slow and sprinkled with mistakes; our appetizers were first served to the table next to ours, “were getting 2 first corses?” The man said jokingly, she then apologized and brought them to us, serving the wrong dish to each person, she didn’t ask my wife or I how we would like our meat prepared, as she was walking away we mentioned the temperatures we would like. She mentioned it was a slow night, you would expect a greater focus or attention to detail in such a case. Although the food was delicious, the overall dining experience was underwhelming.

I was looking forward to trying The Diplomat out but wasnt too happy with the experience. I understand the restaurant is more high end but the service was so-so and food the same. The portions are smaller, I only had about 4 small potatos given with my side. And the wait between each course was a bit lengthy, our waitress did say they had an event going on downstairs, but it seems their kitchen wasnt fully staffed to handle both.

Decided to check this place out during restaurant week.. I had already expected smaller portions due to the special... our party of 6 brought in 2 bottles of wine... $25 corking free FOR EACH BOTTLE.. so we just spend $50 to pop the cork!! Seriously! That’s just Outrageous!! The lady we brought the soup had nocked over my friends water.. so that was a mess... food was alright.. nothing special. Seems a bit overrated. So yeah probably won’t consider coming back here.

We came during the Dine Downtown - figured it was a nice way to try a place with a higher price-tag for an easier entry point. The ambiance, the venue - were great, and while the bar was visually lovely and looked cozy (especially on the rainy night we went) - the quality of the bar seemed a little below standard considering the restaurants price point. When you go the Grange or Ella - even Hook and Ladder - their cocktails are amazing, I expected the same attention to drinks at Diplomat, but while they may have high-end "liquor cabinet" -- it looked mid-range. Chipped ice - not large ice cubes that produce a better cocktail - the use of some cheap condiments, like maraschino cherries instead of the luxardo...hardly any unique bitters - I would hope they would contact they guy that runs the bar program at Hook and Ladder or something like that and up their bar-game. Food was good, service was better than expected - some recent reviews had me concerned, but Brett was great, as was everyone that served our table. I will definitely go back - but might not for happy hour or grab a drink with a friend until the bar improves.

Went for Uncle's birthday. Host was a little snooty probably because like many - we were just the Sac Dine Downtown commoners that he was not accustomed to.

We got the 3-Course Dine Downtown Meal which was extremely small portions. It'd probably be better if we bought the real meal. Waitress was very nice, but we never got any bread. Also, the dessert tasted like a costco frozen cream puff with a half a raspberry for garnish.

Nice ambiance, foods not bad - but might as well just go to Ella's.

Classic steakhouse that is perfect for a date or special occasion. I had never heard of Diplomat so I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was a great venue for my anniversary. The menu was simple and straightforward steaks and seafood with a few other options, but done well. My ribeye was cooked perfectly and had that nice charred flavor from the grill. Service was friendly. Would come back

Went a couple months ago for the $10 lobster and was disappointed that was only available with purchased entree. However, we were glad they did, as I ordered a salmon dish and my wife ordered the linguine and both dishes were both creative and delicous. We returned again this week for our anniversary and were again delighted with the food, the service and view of the Capitol Building. Just hope enough people find this restaurant to keep it going, as there was a very small crowd.

Our dinner at Diplomat Steakhouse was a little surreal. We arrived at 5:30 on a Friday night and were the only people in the dining room for the first hour. After that only a few more people came in for dinner.

When the waiter first came to greet us it was with a couple of items that were on the menu but not available. Unfortunately my choice had been the halibut but he said it wasn't available because it wasn't in season & also one of their steaks is being "phased out" so was also not available.

I reluctantly ordered the salmon which arrived perfectly cooked & was very tasty, but it was on a bed of thin shredded deep fried potatoes topped with a few vegetables. The potatoes were greasy & the vegetables had too much pepper on them for my taste.

My husband had the french onion soup which he said was good, and the ribeye which he had to send back to be cooked to the medium he had ordered but he said it was also good.

We ordered the carrot cake for dessert, but after a half hour of waiting for it the manager came out and told us they didn't have any carrot cake but would comp us a different dessert. We opted for the creme brûlée cheesecake which was very good.

Our waiter was very nice & very efficient & we were apologized to profusely for all the problems but I don't think we will return.

It's a good gourmet steak house. Level set your expectations. The stakes themselves are seasoned to a minimum. If you prefer spicy or dry rub etc...talk to your server. They serve the meat in it's purest unseasoned form but they have many options for those who like a little more zip in their meats.
