About Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Newark

The Scene
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and old friends alike.

The Food:
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts. Delivery available from 11:30 Am until 8:00 PM

Overall good. Not a lot of communication from the girl at the front desk when you check in. And wasn’t just me. Another group checked in right after me and didn’t say anything back. Checking on tables? It’ll be a few minutes? Just kinda stood there and then we needed to ask what was going on..

Good Food-lousy slow service was especially noticeable as we gave ourselves an hour and 15 minutes to eat and then walk to basketball game just steps away...We made the open table res for 4 however a snow storm delayed our arrival and we called to hold reservation as we looked for parking....only to be told "we don't take reservations for special events"...it wasn't an issue as we arrived within 5 minutes and got a table but if that's the case what is the point of having a reservation???? again slow uninterested wait staff made the afternoon less than what it could have been

The servers were great and very nice but they need to change the front of the house...the hostess was very rude. We almost walked out based on her attitude alone.

Probably won’t go back based on this experience as other good bbq places are starting to pop up in nj and these guys aren’t going to be the only decent place for ribs and brisket any longer

It seems like a lot of their bad reviews are due to reservations from open table not being honored or being lost when patrons show up, which is exactly happened to me.

I would suggest open table and dinosaur rethink their relationship. I don’t think it’s good for either of their reputations to have this keep happening .

Like all the Dinosaurs I've been to (Harlem, Syracuse, Troy and Brooklyn,) this is a fun place to eat and spend time with friends. As always, the food was good and the prices very reasonable. I have to remember to leave room for dessert one day.

Food was average. No cornbread gave rolls instead. We eat at Rochester Dinosaur and it is hands down a lot better.

No review. But the first thing we were told when we arrived and said we had a reservation was that there was a problem with Open Table and they had no reservations. Lovely.

They did not keep my reservation. They said open table was not working. Disappointed on that factor. I made a reservation for a reason. They sat me ASAP, which was great and I appreciate and will eat at dino BBQ continuously. But , I would expect more professionalism then the host saying “open table doesn’t work”

I love the atmosphere of this place. How can you go wrong with Bar-B-Que?? The Food is good, but we were there on a Thursday night with no Prudential Center event, and the service was slow. It was 20 minutes before we got a drink. The food was good and I really want this place to be successful, I just wish the service had been a bit more attentive and speedy.

Food was awesome(as always). Waited 35 minutes for someone to take out order. And that was only because I flagged down the manager(who was very nice). Found out later that the waiter/waitress didn't come to work. Usually the service is good.

Had a problem this time. Plates were greasy and sent them back. Also I was given a gift card from a friend for $25.00. When I presented it, it came up as only $10.00. Got my friend on the phone and she confirmed $25.00 with her confirmation number which she had placed on the phone. She said on the phone when you order a gift card It has to be $25.00 and up not $10.00. The manager is suppose to follow up on this and get back with me. I was there Sunday and today is Wednesday, no call back yet.

Arrived a few minutes before our reservation at 2 for lunch and there was a line out the door and around the side of the building. They were completely overwhelmed at the check in. Apparently a Disney show just ended across the street and people had reservations but the line out the door and confusion were to much for me to handle so we left. Disappointed!!!

Took several of my colleagues out to dinner while on business in Newark. Uber driver stated not a great neighborhood on drive but clise yo Devil's stadium. Food is clearly the best BBQ around! Love the Wango Tango Wings and pick 3 meats! Everyone raved about the corn bread! Service was exceptional!

The waiter was friendly and helpful. Food was dry and hard. Meat was STUCK on the bone and over-doused with sauce. The waiter forgot about our table. We noticed that the table next to us was also left without service for a long time to the point that they asked to be moved.

Service was excellent and very attentive. Got the ribs and they were off the charts good. Juicy, tender, meaty and very tasty. The sides were excellent as well. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a casual, high-energy place and will definitely be returning here in the future.

Big fan of Dinosaur BBQ, but this wasn't as good as usual. Ribs were burnt, brisket was flavorful but on the dry side, and the pulled pork wasn't as well-seasoned as it should be. But, sides were good, drinks were good, dessert was good, and service was good. Maybe it was just an off day.

The meal was good, however the star of the show was a fried green tomato appetizer instead of BBQ. Brisket was a bit of a letdown with little smokey flavor and sauce lacked much depth.

Friend and I had a craving for BBQ so we decided to drive a half hour to Dino BBQ in Newark. Service was good but the food was terrible. Ordered salmon fritters, ribs and a half chicken. Salmon fritters were 3 pieces, a joke. The ribs were probably 2 days old judging by how tough and dry it was. The chicken was passable. Just a very disappointing meal all together. Have been to Dinosaur in Brooklyn and Rochester and it's been excellent every time but Newark was beyond disappointing. Won't ever go there again.

The service was awful. The hostess was rude. I was with 6 team members for a business dinner. It took 1 hr. To get one round of drinks. They brought random plates of food that we didn't order and told us it was all they had because they were out of most food. The manager yelled at us when we shared our unfortunate experience there. He said he had to tend to someone who fell and was bleeding all over the floor. We will never return or recommend it. I hope they learn from this experience.

When I think of a bar-b-que spot, I am thinking chicken wings and fried catfish, not fried green tomatos and jerk salmon. The appetizer sampler is a must (deviled eggs, chicken wings, fried green tomatoes and shrimp). If I ever end up back there, I would order that as my entree. The jerk salmon sounded good, but there was a lot going on. Since it comes with rice and beans, you don't really need the two sides that it comes with. The beans and rice alone was good, but with the flavors on the salmon it wasn't a good combination to me. The place was packed, so don't take my experience as a way to judge it (then again, it has a great location). Review the menu before you go and if you see something you like, take a chance.

my 3rd time here-really a PruArena, next door, bar&cold food comes in 5minutes-the combo platter=17.95!corn muffin tasted wierd and stale, not heated at all0brisket had lots of fat all around the slices-the pulled pork told my guest, too sugary-I know Senator Cory Booker got this restaurant next to the Arena, but it has become really a bar-even when my guest and I went to the cell phone store on Broad st.,she said Happy Hour only!

The Fried Green Tomato's were delicious, the waiter was friendly as well. The food could have been a little better. The cornbread was burnt and tasteless. I ordered a Cuban sandwich which had more to be desired, it was sloppy and unappetizing. Everyone had things on their plate that could have used some extra spice or flavor. Overall we had a good time.

I've been here before, and it's an excellent option before an event at the Prudential Center or NJPAC. I recommend a reservation, especially during NJ Devils' hockey season. The food is predictable, but always hearty and flavorful, BBQ. I had the catfish this time around: not the best I've ever had, but no complaints. My husband had the pulled-pork sandwich, and my son had a ribs combo plate. My sides - gumbo and greens - were excellent. The lemon ice-box pie was also very good, although it took an inexplicably long time for our server to inform us that there was no more pecan pie, and to bring our dessert. She was very amiable, however, and we've usually found the staff at Dinosaur to be quite pleasant and cheerful.

I was not impressed with this restaurant. The server informed us that they were out of pulled pork and we were also informed (after we ordered it) that the shrimp from our appetizer 'may not be served before our entree'. My brisket platter was a sandwich that was cold. This place is just ok and I won't be going back.
