About Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Harlem
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. Unfinished wood-beamed ceiling, burlap bag curtains, scattered country bric-a-brac, and an enthusiastic greeting feel worlds away from the city. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and groups of Columbia students.
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Harlem Ratings and Reviews
We love this restaurant as long as you have a reservation in advance. Just stopping by will earn you a 1+ hour wait for a table depending on the night. The baked wings are to die for!!!!! The ambience is great and the location is prime for coming out of the city or heading into the city afterwards.
The location of the restaurant, under a viaduct, is in an area undergoing change. Our reservation was honored immediately, otherwise the reported wait was 45 minutes. We enjoyed our fried green tomato appetizer and all loved their ribs, brisket and most of the sides (especially the cole slaw and mac'n'cheese. Much of the food is on the sweet side, but you kind of expect that, although not necessarily in collard greens. Portions were generous and the service was attentive. My wife would not order the chicken again nor the salted potatoes, but we were happy to have some left over ribs and brisket to take home. The price tag at the end was quite reasonable.
They had no regular sugar to put in coffee. They had no burger buns without sesame seeds once it was sent back so they just threw the burger on hero bread cut the burger to make it fit. Ordered lettuce and tomato and received a little stalk piece from the lettuce and a very small piece of tomato on the one side of the hero bread that they cut in half. Waitress seemed upset at being asked for regular sugar. Not even a welcome smile. Disgusting service. But thw ribs were good. Delivery from them would be the way I go from now on. Then they reported that i didn't keep my reservation when they never bothered to ask if I had one.
My daughter attended Syracuse where we first learned of Dino. Tried to get there every trip to the campus. Then Dino came to Chicago and we were thrilled to have one locally. Alas, it closed . My daughter now lives in Harlem and we once again can get our BBQ fix when visiting her. Love the cornbread and pork platter so much I break my usual no meat policy and chow down. Lots of side choices inc some we never had in other locations. And due to busy night and wait for our food, waiter Carlos brought a complimentary piece of cheesecake. Nice customer service!
WILL!!! WILL!!! WILL!!!
He is one of the best servers since O have been going there. My friends first time and she loved everything. The location, the staff, the food and our server Will. He made everything twice as good. I love the food and the staff. Dinosaurs is a 10+ for me.
Return visit to one of our favorite BBQ joints in the city. We had the Sweetheart Special for two - which was delicious and enough food for leftovers; also an excellent price for the quality/quantity. We started with the wings. The devil's duel wings were extremely hot - exactly as advertised! Can't wait to return.
It was my friends birthday, the food was amazing, their deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes were delicious. I always get the brisket and ribs plate with a side of Mac and cheese and potato salad. I got the Donkey Punch which is amaze balls. A cute cake with a fireworks type of candle was brought out to my friend. It was soooo cute!!! The waitress was so attentive and nice. I love it there, food is good, drinks are good, ambience great. Perfect for dates that are established and don't mind eating with their hands! Not that great for a first date. May be too loud.
A group of us went on a Saturday night, the restaurant was packed. I was happy I made a reservation because the wait time without a reservation was 1hr 30mins. It took about 10 minutes to be seated which was great. The server got a few items that we ordered wrong but the taste of the meal made up for it. I recommend the brisket and the ribs, both were tender and very tasty. The donkey punch was also very good. We also had the whiskey carmel cheesecake which was amazing!I will definitely recommend the Harlem location to others.
Wow this place is BUSY! you will need to make reservations if you do not want to wait 1 hour or longer. I made my reservations via Opentable and had no issues, actually got seated 1/2 hour earlier. The line was out the front door. Got the look from folks on the line waiting lol. Super friendly staff and comfortable seating, we were 9. food came fairly quickly, drinks were reasonable at 8 bucks for a martini and same for beer. We went with the BBQ rib special for 2, 31 bucks for a full rack of ribs and 4 small sides. More than enough for 2, actually 3 of us shared this. Sweet potatoes are creamy and delicious and so were the pork/prime rub/Beef sliders we shared. Another good app were the fried green tomatoes, will def get all of these again on our next visit.
It's been years since I've been to Dinosaur BBQ. But I wanted to take my boys and I have to say, I was very happy with the experience! The only downside (and to be fair, it was Saturday night at 8:15) was the wait for our food. Outside of this, everything else was phenomenal! Our waitress, Nikki (hope I spelled that correctly), was an absolute doll! She was attentive; although she was clearly swamped, and did an excellent job of making sure I and my boys were happy from appetizers to dessert. The son's mac & cheese was sooo good, I ordered a side for myself. The manager brought it to the table himself. We had wings for an app; delicious. My small boys ordered sliders (pulled pork & brisket) and audibly ate the whole thing. I had the chicken & ribs, whipped sweet potatoes & green: it was perfect. Be warned, it's a lot of food, but every bite was worth it! When my youngest complained that his mac & cheese was too spicy (it really wasn't, but he's the type of child that cannot stomach any seasoning, it's all spicy to him) Nikki gladly comped his meal and replaced his plate with cornbread and beans. She was attentive, responsive and proactive! I can't say enough about her. I'll definitely go back with friends or the boys.
in August 27, 1989 i was born and this year in 2017 was my official birthdate. it has been 3 years sine I have been home and since I've heard about Dinosaurs and never been my mom brought me there. I AM SO GLAD THAT SHE DID!!!! The food was off the chain, the service was great and my server even personally came and sang happy birthday to me. This was the best visit home for a wonderful birthdate and great food and company. I am going to look to se if they have a Dinosaurs out on the west coast where I live because people has got to taste the greatness in the food. Thanks Mommy, you are the best and so was Dinosaurs food. Rating 10+ and ** !
The portions have gotten smaller now that the side dishes are not in individual bowls. I am disappointed and it's not worth the money people spend to dine out. When I go out I don't just want meat I want the side dishes as well and not happy how skimpy the food has gotten. I wont eat here like I used to.
We were a party of 7, I would have given the restaurant 5 Stars but 2 of the dinners came out 15 minutes after everyone else received theirs. The waitress did compensate with 2 Beers but would have liked for all the meals to have come at the same time, no excuse!
I have been to Dino BBQ many times. Their wings are amazing and ribs are really good as well. Everything was very solid except the chairs we happened to have at our table were some of the most uncomfortable chairs I had ever sat on and when I said something all 5 others members of our party agreed very uncomfortable.
The place is fun, and even on a Sunday night, pretty busy. The food was all good, nothing was disappointing, but nothing was truly special either. The sides were more notable than the mains.
Portions are huge, so we ordered 3 mains and one app for 2 adults and 3 teens, though no one was very hungry, and that was plenty of food.
as usual the food didn't disappoint. while the other locations are good, the harlem location is just that much better. never had a bad meal there!!! we usually enjoy the ribs along with the wings (devil duel are my absolute favorite) and the green fried tomatoes.
