About Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Harlem
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. Unfinished wood-beamed ceiling, burlap bag curtains, scattered country bric-a-brac, and an enthusiastic greeting feel worlds away from the city. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and groups of Columbia students.
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Harlem Ratings and Reviews
The food was great as usual. However, I made a reservation for 13 people. & the table wasnt ready @ the specified time of 6:15p.m. (the maitre'd said we couldn't be seated because on 6 of us arrived @ 6:15p.m. & she was polite & apologized). Our appetizers arrived late 45 minutes from waiting at the bar & another waiting period for the entree (a long wait for a large group is fine , but not another 45 minutes!!! Waiter didn't provide water @ first & missed a couple drink orders, but nothing major. After only 2 hours @ the table & spending over $450 w/tip, the manager asked us to leave 2 accommodate other patrons. All of us ignored everything until that point because I told the water we would be ordering another round of drinks & possibly finger food. Being asked to move back to the bar, when other tables were opening up was uncalled for, even for a Friday afterwork.
Service was cheerful but slow. The space was kind of dirty, the tables sticky from the moment we sat down. The guy who cleared the table put his dirty, food stinky bin on the floor next to the table. He was nice, as I said, but that was sloppy. NEVER bring a dirty bin to take food to the kitchen. Carry it. I hadn't seen that in years and years. So thoughtless. The waitress was bright and cheerful to our party. I was happy that she and the other servers were happy. BUT THE SERVICE WAS SLOW to get to various stages. Maybe your understaffed?
The food was amazing. I'm still thinking about something so simple as their deviled eggs. EVERYTHING on my plate was delicious. The only negative thing I can say about my experience are the chairs. They are very uncomfortable after sitting in them for a while. Other than that I and my fiance enjoyed our evening at Dinosaur BBQ.
Went there Saturday Oct.14, with a "reservation" for 6. Once I got there the ppl in the front told us we had to wait because our table wasn't ready which made no sense because it was a reservation. We had to wait an hour which was ridiculous. One hour later we got our table and the waitress was very rude as we ordered our food she seemed annoyed, and was acting in a rush. Not only did we have to wait an eternity to get seated but the waitress didn't do her job properly which is to properly served the guests. After two people ordered drinks and were brought to them, I ordered my drink and she had the nerve to ask if we were "old enough to drink". And had to show her our Id's even though we were all 21. The entire time she had a bad vibe. On a happier note food and drinks were great
It was okay if you're in the neighborhood but if not, it's out of the way, really crowded, very loud and the cocktails were watered down. I would go there again only if I were in the neighborhood because the barbecue was good but I would not make a special trip.
the good: food was very good, we ordered way too much! Got the full rack with 4 sides to share with my GF, barely ate half of it. We'd had the appetizer platter for two first, so maybe that was our mistake.
the bad: service was up and down. jA few minutes after we sat down, without ordering, someone plunked down a single slider and a wing sampler, which we thought was an "amuse bouche"; turns out, waiter made a mistake and gave us someone else's order. We didn't get charged for it, but between the extra wings and the apps, I was full by the time dinner arrived.
the ugly: made a reservation for 7:45, and showed up right on time. Didn't get seated until almost 8:30. I understand places get busy, but 45 minutes is a problem in my book. Added to that, I'm diabetic, and I took my meds at 7:30 expecting to start eating in the next hour; by the time we got seated, my blood sugar was crashing, and I desperately ordered a Coke just to get some sugar in my system. For those who don't know, low blood sugar is life threatening, and leaves me sweating and shaky, which is not a way to start a meal.
We love this restaurant as long as you have a reservation in advance. Just stopping by will earn you a 1+ hour wait for a table depending on the night. The baked wings are to die for!!!!! The ambience is great and the location is prime for coming out of the city or heading into the city afterwards.
The location of the restaurant, under a viaduct, is in an area undergoing change. Our reservation was honored immediately, otherwise the reported wait was 45 minutes. We enjoyed our fried green tomato appetizer and all loved their ribs, brisket and most of the sides (especially the cole slaw and mac'n'cheese. Much of the food is on the sweet side, but you kind of expect that, although not necessarily in collard greens. Portions were generous and the service was attentive. My wife would not order the chicken again nor the salted potatoes, but we were happy to have some left over ribs and brisket to take home. The price tag at the end was quite reasonable.
They had no regular sugar to put in coffee. They had no burger buns without sesame seeds once it was sent back so they just threw the burger on hero bread cut the burger to make it fit. Ordered lettuce and tomato and received a little stalk piece from the lettuce and a very small piece of tomato on the one side of the hero bread that they cut in half. Waitress seemed upset at being asked for regular sugar. Not even a welcome smile. Disgusting service. But thw ribs were good. Delivery from them would be the way I go from now on. Then they reported that i didn't keep my reservation when they never bothered to ask if I had one.
My daughter attended Syracuse where we first learned of Dino. Tried to get there every trip to the campus. Then Dino came to Chicago and we were thrilled to have one locally. Alas, it closed . My daughter now lives in Harlem and we once again can get our BBQ fix when visiting her. Love the cornbread and pork platter so much I break my usual no meat policy and chow down. Lots of side choices inc some we never had in other locations. And due to busy night and wait for our food, waiter Carlos brought a complimentary piece of cheesecake. Nice customer service!
WILL!!! WILL!!! WILL!!!
He is one of the best servers since O have been going there. My friends first time and she loved everything. The location, the staff, the food and our server Will. He made everything twice as good. I love the food and the staff. Dinosaurs is a 10+ for me.
