About Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Harlem
The Syracuse-based barbecue phenomenon plunked a sprawling roadhouse with all the familiar back-road accoutrements into an abandoned meat factory. Unfinished wood-beamed ceiling, burlap bag curtains, scattered country bric-a-brac, and an enthusiastic greeting feel worlds away from the city. The roll call of devotees includes area families, couples on casual dates and groups of Columbia students.
Though fried green tomatoes and punchy boiled shrimp start things off right, the smell of smoking meats quickly adjusts the focus. The smokey-sweet pork ribs gently release from the bone and the Texas brisket, a touch dry, gets a lift from a topping of tangy cured jalapeños and a dash of hot sauce. It's even safe to venture from red meat with the truly moist and tender chicken, brined then smoked for deep flavor. With the exception of the cakey corn bread, sides keep pace, with tangy Creole potato salad and sweetened baked beans the standouts.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que - Harlem Ratings and Reviews
I've always wanted to try Dinosaur BBQ as I've heard the hype. The place is loaded with charm and welcoming. However, the seats in our booth were worn and broken, and I was surprised when we were given extremely scratchy plastic plates. This is a turn-off to anyone who loves dining out. The wedge salad is naked lettuce and tomato, no bacon or cheese, but came with a delicious dressing. We had the family special which, for $70, is a good deal and feeds 4-6. I recommend the chicken, moist and tasty, and the ribs were good. Both the pulled pork and brisket were over-smoked. Cornbread was very good. The mac & cheese forgettable, but the house made fries excellent. Overall, good not great. They need to replace their scratchy plastic dishware and re-stuff the seats in the booths.
Excellent food ! We went to Dinosaur BBQ for a retirement dinner for a colleague. The service was excellent! Love the fried green tomatoes ! We had the combo plates. Tasty ! The place has a good selections of wines. We finished the dinner off with Key Lime Pie. A purely enjoyable dining experience.
Went for my sons Birthday with family members(14), we had reservation for 830 pm, we all arrived on time , but still had to wait 30 minutes to be seated. Waitress was pleasant and friendly , but I think she may have had to many tables , because after she took drink order , food order there was long wait for both to come.
Had a reservation but still had to wait twenty minutes. The staff figuring out what to do with us simply seemed annoyed we were there at all. When seated the table next too us played a basketball game loudly on their phone during our whole date. The last time I was here the table next to us was on her phone loudly as well, really loudly, but it's not the sort of place that would pay any attention to a complaint or move you. Chaotic waiter service. They seemed overwhelmed. The food is great here but we will never be back.
The ribs were just okay. Nothing special. Definitely not as good as the dry rub ribs I get when I’m in Nashville. (Peg Leg Porker is the place if you ever get to Music City.) I did like the sides, especially the barbecued fried rice. The Cajun deviled eggs were also pretty good. Collared greens were a bit too spicy. Baked beans were pretty ordinary as was the Mac n cheese. I was really hoping the ribs would have been better. I’m just used to moist, tender, fall off the bone goodness. Dinosaur did not deliver.
I took my father and some family here when he was visiting from Florida over the holidays and the food and service was far beyond anything I was expecting! The brisket and wings are the best I’ve ever had and the smoky flavor of the meat is amazing! I used to work as a waiter in nyc for 6 years so I have had a good amount of food experience in this city and this is definitely my #1 go to spot being that I live close by. Recently I took my wife here for lunch and we ate so much we didn’t eat anything else for the rest of the day, the value is great for the quantity & quality. I look forward to my next visit!!
Arrived at 6:25 (all of us) for a 6:30 reservation. Was told we’d have to wait 30 minutes. Not sure what the point of the reservation was. Walk-ins were told the same thing. Waited just over 35 minutes. Food was OK. Strong flavor of liquid smoke in most things. Not as good as it once was.
Overall, The food was very bad...chicken uncooked. The ambiance was okay, however the smell of smoke was over powering. If you have elimainated beef/pork from your diet this is not certainly the place to dine. Dinosaurs is known for the comfort food I.e Mac&Cheese, collard greens it was bad too! Recommendations:
New Menu, new cooks and better service
NEW STRATEGIC PLAN
Dinosaur BBQ is always one of my favorites, it is my go-to barbeque in NYC! We brought friends from out of town there and they truly enjoyed it. Dinner with shared app not including drinks comes to about 25/person including tip and tax. It can get pricey when you start out but overall a really great choice everyone is pleased! Great for families and groups.
When we got there our whole party wasn’t there and the receptionist told us no problem the table was ready and to let her know. As soon as everyone showed up we were seated right away. The server was friendly and easy going. We ordered an appetizer and it was on the table 5 minutes later. Once we ordered the food it was very quick to come out. Food was very good. Kinda small portions but we got the sampler that came with 2 meats and 2 sides. Once we were done check came quickly and we were on our way. Didn’t feel rushed but was defiantly expecting a little more time at the restaurant. Defiantly would recommend.
Always heard great things from my Ithaca living sister who's gone to Syracuse restaurant several times. Thought wife, son & I from Bayside, Queens should finally try Harlem branch.
Our visit began on a late Sunday afternoon, unbelievably pulling into a legal parking spot right outside Dino BBQ...WOW, off to a great start! Our waiter was a cool, very polite guy. Food was EXCELLENT, nice size portions of the " Real McCoy". Enjoyed a drink (wife drove) which was reasonably priced. No room for dessert; we all left full. Overall we were very happy we finally did this and look forward to returning sometime soon. PS- this is a legit review, I'm not being paid for this. Steve
We were seated properly. Ordered our drinks which were very good however must have gotten mixed up because I kept getting the same drinks even though we didn't order them. Cut to the same appetizers again even though I only wanted one and then finally the food came out and everything was correct however it took a very long time. We were not in a hurry so that was good my son's love their food
I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner at Dinosaur Bar B Que. The portion sizes are decent and the food was very tasty. I ordered the ribs which were very succulent and moreish. Staff were attentive and knowledgeable. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good southern cuisine.
The brisket was recommend by all that I told I was going to Dinosaur for the first time and boy was I so disappointed. The food came out freezing cold I couldn't even eat it. When the waiter seen that I didn't eat the brisket she asked me if I wanted to take it with me and I said no throw it in the garbage.
