DGS believes that delicatessen, German for good eats, comes from the soul of the old World Jewish kitchen. In that spirit, DGS brines, cures, smokes and pickles everything served on premises.
Beverage Director Brian Zipin crafted a beer, wine and cocktail menu amplifying the bold flavors of the delicatessen.

Best pastrami sandwich ever. The pastrami to measure all other pastrami by. Soul warming matzo ball soup. Chewy chocolatey brownie. So sad they closed their doors.

Really enjoyed lunch today. Always good for a Reuben and fries, or the turkey. Sorry to hear they are closing. Sunday, February 11th is their last day.
Food was extremely poor. The matzo ball soup was similar to dish water and the matzo brie was barely discernible as being made from matzo. When you combine the poor food with the incredibly loud noise, it makes for a one-time visit only.
Horrendous pastrami. At least half the pieces that actually had meat on it contained fat and I even got pieces that were only fat. No excuse to serve it that way. Very unlikely to go back unless they change.
We went to DGS for dinner before the theater. My friends had been there before and recommended it. We enjoyed the food and the extensive beer list. However, the menu was very small and offered few choices. My friends said that was a huge change from their previous visit.
The delicious smell of deli meet greeted me as soon as I walked in the door. Unfortunately, the pastrami was not as good as I remembered it to be. It was tougher, chewier, and not as moist as I would have liked. Hopefully, this was an anomaly from what has otherwise been a go-to for great pastrami in DC.
Food was mediocre and menu very limited. Latkes were too think, perfectly round and overcooked. Applesauce was clearly homemade and very good, as was the chicken liver. Broth for matzo ball soup was very odd. It looked and tasted like French onion soup broth (or at least beef broth), although the waiter assured me it was chicken broth with duck fat, hence the dark brown color (?). I’ve been here before and it’s been better. Probably won’t return.
The Mazel Tov is a great drink and I highly recommend the latkes!!!
Such an underrated place. So sad when they closed the merrifield location, so we found the other one!
Portions a bit skimpy for what you’d expect at a New York style deli but quality was good. Great latkes.
Solid lunch spot near Dupont Circle and one of the few casual places where you can reserve a table - crucial for a business lunch. Portions are not gargantuan (that is a good thing) and the house made pickles are great. Burger is super juicy and they have a good falafel platter.
New experience for us turned out to be a good one. It was very reminiscent of a New York deli but with more of an upbeat vibe. Overall, the food was well done and timed well. Unfortunately, I ordered a pastrami sandwich that was full of fat. The preparer had not trimmed the meat at all so there were huge hunks of fat.
Everything else was very well prepared. Small point but the pickles were so excellent. I’m tired of going to restaurants that give you mushy bread and butter pickles - those were crisp and garlic-y and delicious. The waiter recommended a Porter on tap that was excellent. We would go back, just not order pastrami.
I usually enjoy DGS. I had the smoked salmon grilled cheese and the amount of salmon used could have been enough for one half a sandwich. It was very skimpy. Tasted good, a shame it wasn't very fulfilling.

One word...bland. Cute restaurant with huge potential, but both the Matzo Ball soup and Pastrami sandwich were lacking in flavor. French fries were good! The search is still on for a great pastrami sandwich in DC!
Everything we ordered was amazing and if it was a little closer I'd be a regular.

DGS has been a great spot for business and family dinners .. and my guests always
find it memorable. Food is great !! And I like to sit at the small bar to wait till my guests
arrived. All it's missing is a very small discount for bearded customers !
Very pleasant, easy-going but still noteworthy; I really liked their special Rosh Hashanah menu! Plenty of space, attractive interior, good service, and unexpectedly good wines by the glass. I will definitely be back!

DGS is being too clever with it's menu. I don't mind updates on traditional deli food, but kimchi in the pastrami hash? Patrami sandwich expensive and meat not salty enough.

Way overpriced for what you get. I had a pastrami sandwich. It was not even in the same league with Katz's in New York.

I ordered hamburger with salad on the side. The burger was very good however, the side salad was old & found dirt in it. Really disappointed.
The food was great - love the pickles - but it was so noisy we couldn't really hear each other.
Authentic Delis have become rare. DGS is an authentic deli but in a beautifully updated space. Menu respects tradition while offering a modern eating experience. Food is always fresh and of highest quality, prepared perfectly, and ample portions (not oversized, which I find annoying). Service is both pleasant/friendly and very efficient. Price is fair. And they have a bar!

DGS is always a good place to eat a unique Ashkenazi ,non kosher food, in DC.
I work around the corner from DGS and eat lunch or meet friends for happy hour here occasionally. It's the nicest not super fancy sit down restaurant in the surrounding few blocks.
I ate here twice in May - once a happy hour and this week for lunch. For lunch, I had the salmon rilettes and a side salad. The rillettes were delicious -- what a great addition to the menu! And the salad was generous. For happy hour, we had the rillettes, the chicken, and one other thing I don't remember. They have very good wine by the glass and nice mixed drinks.
Generally, the food is well done, though I'm disappointed in a few menu changes. I prefer the older version of their turkey sandwich with avocado and pepper relish. The now serve it with Russian dressing and cold slaw; if I wanted that, I'd get a turkey Reuben. Also, they used to have a few more salad options. It would be nice to see those back on the menu. I also miss the fish sliders on the happy hour menu. I'm not a big red meat eater, so this isn't necessarily the best place for me, but they've got the ingredients to make the menu a little more health or veggie friendly without other overhead. Hopefully they'll add a few lighter options.

Pastrami was absolutely great, but it's served on bread lightly toasted. What self respecting deli serves a sandwich on toast unless requested? When I asked for plain untoasted rye bread, it came and wasn't very fresh. I guess that explains the toasting. All that said, pastrami was so tender and tasty would highly recommend it to anyone. I would go again. Yummy!
It was just lunch with my son and had seen a program on WETA about the history of DGS in the DC area and love good deli food, which the restaurant had. The restaurant is also very attractive with exposed brick walls, however as is the case, this made the noise level very high and there were even vacant tables. Great bill of fare, OK prices, lovely to look at, just noisy.
The best place to get a nosh. As New Yorker, I can go and have a taste of home.
A New York deli that's been updated a bit. My pastrami was better than I ever remember on the Lower East side. The sandwich was not overstuffed to obscene levels but it was better cured. The $15 lunch special is a great deal. The egg cream was also a wonderful treat.

Had a wonderful time celebrating with friends. Were very flexible with our increase of people for our party.
Absolutely amazing!!! This place does not disappoint. Order the Benedictburg, it is a must! Hanky Panky is one of the best cocktails.
I have eaten at DGS in the past, with ok results although not spectacular. This outing however was a big disappointment. The bread served with the turkey sandwich was so stale; almost uneatable. My friend simply ate the turkey without the bread. The stuffed cabbage that I ordered was cold and crunchy for some unexplainable reason. All this for portions that were modest in size given the prices. I will frequent other restaurants for lunch in the future, given that there are so many better options.
Despite some new competition, this establishment still makes the best pastrami sandwich in Washington. The "quiet" rating reflects that we ate pretty much in isolation the night we were there. DGS deserves (and generally gets, based on our prior visits) more patronage.
