Our menu brings together a mélange of flavors, textures and contrasts.The menu brings together influences of Jay’s Indian origin and features his mom’s homemade naan recipe made one at a time on a cast iron skillet, Scott’s upbringing around country cooking and our friend Chef Eve’s childhood memories of the spice markets in Jerusalem, growing up around vibrant flavors of Cuban cooking in Miami, and her culinary training in France.
Delicious food and good service
We really like the new contemporary atmosphere. The food during restaurant week was very tasty and the happy hour fab as always.

We had dinner there for restaurant week. The food was excellent; among three of us none had anything they didn't like. My only ding would be on the service. For the most part it was excellent; food arrived in a timely manner, water was refilled before being out, beverages were checked to see if we wanted another, dishes were taken away fairly quickly. All the staff were extremely friendly without being intrusive. However, after serving our dessert the waiter disappeared for a long time without checking in to see if we wanted coffee/tea or if we needed our bill. There was also a bit of a snafu with the credit cards but I'm willing to write that one off as a one-time thing.
First time there. Enjoyed our dinner, immensely. Great selections. Great service. Great dining environment.

Fantastic meal with colleagues during restaurant week- almost all of us ordered the same thing - winter salad and the sea bass - and it was universally enjoyed.

The food was delicious and the flavor was very unique. The spices were unexpected and wonderful. The service was really good and the staff really understood the menu. The space was beautiful and peaceful. We felt like we were the only people in the restaurant. It is wonderful to be able to have conversations and not the thumping music. Food is very good. I got the Filet Mignon cooked medium. It could have been cooked MEd-rare as well. overall the restaurant is very good and nice ambience.
perfectly competent food, not as good or innovative as it thinks it is. Odd yuppie vibe, but my biggest complaint is that a "40 garlic clove" steak didn't come with a single garlic clove! needs an identity but thinks it already has one. Still miss Vellum.
The food was absolutely outstanding. The crab cake appetizer was delicious. The lamb shank was enormous , melted in your mouth with a succulent blend of spices in the sauce. The seabass, likewise was moist and had an equally pleasing spice rub. The apple/pear crumble dessert was great and enough for two people.
The only drawback: the deafening noise. We were fortunate to have a table with curtains on either side (a nice touch) which afforded us a little more privacy, but the noise level was unpleasant.
Absolutely one of the best restaurants in Ann Arbor. Went there with my boys who commented, "This was probably one of the best meals, top to bottom, that we have had in Ann Arbor." Food was imaginative and exquisitely prepared. Flavors bold without being overpowering, although folks who don't like spice may find some of the offerings a bit too much. Service was fabulous, servers knowledgable and helpful. If you haven't been here yet, you have to give it a try.
The restaurant is very attractive and modern and the employees are all extremely well trained, thoroughly versed in the selection and clearly take pride in the restaurant. Our server, Kate, was wonderful! The complimentary naan is unbelievably delicious and all three of us were delighted with our selections. (Strip steak, mushroom pasta and crab cakes and shrimp tacos. )We’ll go back again and again.
Can not say enough good things about this place. Came across this place on yelp and made a reservation for our 5 year wedding anniversary. They knew it was our anniversary and they made the celebration an AMAZING experience! The braised short rib is to DIE FOR. Not only was the food incredible but the staff as well. So friendly and accommodating. Will definitely be coming here again!
Had dinner here with three friends, we all enjoyed our meals, and an after dinner port. I highly recommend this restaurant!
dessous is fantastic. The lamb shank was monstrous. My rapid metabolism husband with a big appetite couldn't finish his! I had the sea bass. It was outstanding (and not a bit ill-tempered).
The food was excellent. I had the sea bass and my husband had a short rib special. I would get the sea bass everytime! Our waiter was really good. The hostess was a bit inattentive, being interrupted by others when speaking to us. Will return.
Melange' is no more...Long Live Dessous!
The gorgeous bar and central glass enclosed wine cellar remain. The beloved Duck Nachos (a MUST try!) are still on the menu , but virtually everything else in this subterranean gem has been revised, and for the better!
From the live jazz and the unique cocktail offerings, to the warm flatbread with spice-dusted butter brought to your table upon seating, the experience at Dessous is upscale but unpretentious. The ambience is light, open and inviting (the new flooring is a major improvement!)
Consulting chef and local treasure, Eve Aronoff, has created an art gallery of inspired dishes blending French country, Latin and Indian influences. All presented with the simple elegance typical of a Parisian-trained master.
We began our adventure with the Samosa of the Season- a large, warm and cheesy, Mexican inspired number, paired with a glass of Villa Giada Moscato d'Asti. A great start!
For the main course, I had the evening special; Braised short ribs on a bed of creamy polenta, while my better half indulged in the Cool Weather Spaccatelli; creamy pasta, savory mushrooms and huge pan roasted gulf shrimp. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, layered subtle flavors that please the pallet and warm the soul. A bottle of Donati Vineyard's "The Immigrant Red" was the perfect accompaniment.
A couple of little niggles:
While impressive in range, the presentation of the Wine menu is irritating ( multiple loose pages connected with a single rivet at the center top; awkward).
And the aforementioned glass wine cellar...The staff do a fine job keeping said glass spotlessly clean. So clean in fact that, mistaking the near end as an open door, a patron (me) walked straight into the glass! An etched logo at eye level would look tasteful, and perhaps avoid a broken nose.
And finally, the service From start to finish, everyone at Dessous was warm, friendly and very professional.

Food, service, atmosphere were outstanding. Main courses a little pricey.
This was our second visit, and it was just as outstanding as the first time. Our party of 4 devoured the complimentary naan (3 times) before our appetizers arrived. The duck nachos, carrot and ginger soup (very gingery, light and tasty), skillet steak, lamb shank, mushroom pasta were some of our favorites. It is definitely our favorite place in Ann Arbor! Cocktails and wine list were great as well.
dessous continues to impress. The reincarnation of Melange is a much-improved version. This is the third time I have dined here (once with friends, second was a business dinner). The food and drink is excellent. This evening, our service was very good. The manager was on-hand and personable. We had a vegetarian diner with us who felt very well accommodated. The French-Indian fusion is a fun combination and is well-executed.
Second time here in a month. Great food and ambiance. This time our server was extremely overwhelmed and gave us too much space. We had to ask for things several times: to order, check, dessert. He forgot a coffee to go with dessert. P
Great ambience, great service
Very enjoyable experience. We were not expecting such a great experience from a beverage before dinner at the bar with Jake the bartender to the quiet table and the exceptional food.
Espresso coffee is usually served with a brown sugar lump, with a lemon twist. But Dessous has no idea!!!!!
We came for our son’s graduation celebration after reading very good reviews for Dessous. Everyone was genuinely friendly! The cocktails, starters and entrees had such complex and complimentary seasonings. Truly an exceptional dining experience! We hope to be back next time we visit Ann Arbor!
The food was great, accompanied by very nice wine. The simple fish is always wonderful and not really "simple." The cold weather salad and pasta were both excellent and suited to the season. Dessous has become our favorite Ann Arbor restaurant. The service was adequate but not as good as the food. Our server was not knowledgeable about the wine list and although she consulted with the bartender, her reports were meager and not helpful. We would have appreciated a better resource for a wine conversation. She also was marginally inattentive. That did not diminish our dining experience as we are a group of old friends and we have lots of catching up to do when we dine out. However, it is disconcerting to wait as long as we did for appetizers, wine and cocktails, and dessert. We choose to think of the pace as European leisurely but that would have been easier had we been enjoying the beverages during the waits.
We had a truly delicious meal at Dessous. Every dish was fantastic, and had something special that set it apart from similar dishes at other restaurants. We'll definitely be back!

Excellent dinner, I had duck and my wife had the lamb shank and nice bottle of wine. Only reason for a 4 star rating is that the vegetables and potatoes were not hot. Good dinner spot if you're going to a show at The Ark, sine you can take the elevator upstairs. GM Scott was very welcoming.
Dessous is one of my favorite restaurants in Ann Arbor. The atmosphere is fantastic, the food is amazing and the service is wonderful. The general manager, Scott ensures that the guests of the restaurant are taken care of and are enjoying their dining experience. He goes out of his way to make things right for their customers. Dessous is my go-to restaurant in Downtown Ann Arbor.

desssou is a classy, fine dining experience. When we were there they had a combo playing soft background music. Our service was perfect and everything that we ordered was excellent, including the beer and wine.
Eve Aranoff, the consulting chef, is famous in Ann Arbor, having managed some of its most famous and popular restaurants. dessous does not disappoint. Every appetizer and main dish was delicioius, intersting, and fresh. And the service is outstanding. A pleasure, worth every penny.
Delicious food, great service, and a great story for all of their food! There is a fantastic variety of French, Indian and Latin American inspired food, with some tasty options for a vegetarian. Everything I tried just made me dream of trying everything else on the menu. Highly recommend.
Post remodel and menu changes I'm really impressed! I liked the old Melange too though, but now when you walk downstairs it's light and yet very romantic. Great for groups, date night or even to go solo and sit at the bar! Service was good, food was great and from someone who's rather particular this is now in my top 4 of A2 spots: Adventura for trying new things, Spencer to get veggies prepared so amazing I would eat all vegetarian, Mani for Italian and Dessous for an all around great fusion meal in a sleek environment perfect for date night! In terms of main street eats, this is the spot to make a reservation or pop in to sit at the bar! (Also note we ate with a 3 yr old so they do kiddos and were so kind and attentive!)
We love Dessous! It is our restaurant of choice! Very cool ambiance! Love their salmon cakes.
And, Jake, the bartender, is the best!
