Derek's is an upscale American restaurant serving iconic dishes and fresh, inventive takes on old favorites. The restaurant's dark and luxurious interior feels intimate and cozy, presenting a fine-dining ambiance in a comfortable atmosphere.
The menu is full of great American dishes from coast to coast. Guests can try a jumbo lump crabcake with avocado corn relish and lime cilantro butter, or Derek's Secret Recipe roasted chicken, which is dark meat served crispy and sweet with haricot verts and parmesan whipped potatoes. An entire section of the menu is devoted to flatbread pizzas, with recipes ranging from the traditional margherita to the interesting and unique Amadou's African chicken pizza with red peppers, sliced potatoes and mozzarella. Diners with larger appetites can finish with the Manayunk Chipwhich, a Derek's original with homemade gelato, chocolate chip cookies and caramel sauce.
This was one of those nights where everything was just OK. The waiter was overly chatty and seemed confused by our every order. The food came promptly, but it seemed to have been prepared by someone with a good cookbook but without much of a flair for cooking. DW had a burger, which was delicious, and my sense is that this place is best for red-meat lovers (of which I am not one). The price was fine, so I can't really say that it wasn't worth it. It was just nothing special.
Will probably go back eventually to give it another go, but I won't hurry.
I had the Chilean sea bass and it was very salty. My wife had the butternut squash dish and found it to be extremely sweet. We were seated on the first level and it was extremely tight. I was constantly hit by the waitresses as well as the other patrons leaving or coming. This was a special occasion for us, and I was very disappointed. I would not recommend this restaurant.
I live in Manayunk & wanted a nice place for a business lunch. Perfect choice! Our waiter was super, handling special requests and so attentive. The kitchen also prepared our choices off the menu, much to our delight (could we have the freshly baked flat bread with Parmesan rather than garlic? The mushroom & steak salad with no mushrooms?) My only regret was my business partners had no time for coffee & dessert, though the waiter did tempt us with the "afters" menu, which looked great.
I admired the art on the walls, though you can admire the street scene from the sidewalk tables or window seats in the front. The dining room in the back faces an outdoor garden, so lots of natural light and high ceilings. We enjoyed the restaurant. Thanks, Derek's!
Just back in town after two weeks abroad, we headed out to Dereks to pick-up on the vibe of dining what watching people walk buy like every restaurant we visited in Italy. Warm and inviting setting was matched by flawless execution from the host, wait and kitchen teams.
Sunday night isn't a typical "out to dinner" night for us - but after discovering the half priced wine bottle list at Derek's - it's about to become one. We settled on a spectacular French Sauvignon Blanc that paired exceptionally well with Derek's Secret Recipe country chicken and with the jumbo scallops with fig jam on roasted potatoes. We spilt an overly generous heirloom beet salad with mixed greens and candied walnuts - simply delightful.
In short, Derek's deserves the high marks and high praise found in the OpenTable reviews and their conscientious service team was considerate with the perfect amount of attentiveness. A grown-up dining experience for certain, we'll be back to sample more of their well rounded menu.
Derek's is my go to date night spot. The food is absolutely delicious. The service is always great. And they know how to make an old fashion. A+ in my book. Definitely recommend.
While the everyday menu for large plates could use some updating, the small plates and the specials were very good. The signature drink menu and dessert drinks were innovative and delicious.
The service was friendly and efficient.
Great dinner. Only negative is I was sat at a table very close to other diners while there were other tables available (about 1ft on each side). But other than that, great.
In general, the service is great but it fell short of expectations. First the bread that was promised was not delivered. Then, one of the credit cards was dripped from the folio. When brought to the attention of server and host, it took a while to locate. Someone had returned it to the bar and instead of getting it for us, we were told to fetch it from the bar.
Just alerting you to these lapses as I've always loved coming to Derek's and want to have others that I bring there with me also have a great experience.
Excellent food - only place for improvement is upstairs bar area.
Great meal- great service- food cooked to order- professional staff
