Excellent Ethiopian food at reasonable prices. Great location relative to the Red Line and evening entertainment. Have been there a few times and will certainly return. It is my "go to" Ethiopian place in Chicago.

Demera is great for a group. The shared meal is fun and different. This is the second time we have taken a group to Demera while visiting Chicago. Also, there are many vegetarian choices as well as gluten free.

I have never had a disappointing experience at Demera. The food is great and I feel it is valued appropriately (for the city). Service is usually prompt, without being pushy. There are multiple options for vegetarians. The drinks, particularly beer, are expensive but nothing outrageous for a Chicago restaurant surrounded by multiple local performance venues (Aragon, Riviera, Green Mill, etc.). Great place for a nice, sit-down dinner before a show. I have seen children and some babies there on occasion but in my experience diners are generally adults either out for a nice dinner or getting together before a show. Can be moderately loud but it's entirely possible to have a conversation.

Never tried Ethiopian food before but I liked the round platter with all the different dishes and using the roti like "bread" to scoop it up.

The food is excellent but ask lots of questions. We requested no lamb and found later that they served us lamb. Disgusted but must admit it was good.

Ethiopian food is something vegetarians and carnivores can come together on. And Demera does this with aplomb! Great food, and really wonderful service! The atmosphere could be better but this is the North side of Chicago and space is hard to come by and expensive. Don't let appearances fool you! This place is a gem!

Second time eating here, it never disappoints! Before Demera, I knew nothing about Ethiopian food. Now I can tell you it's delicious and a great excuse to try North African beer you otherwise wouldn't. Recommend to anyone willing to give something new a try.

Mixed impressions. The food is interesting vegetarian, plus tilapia, shrimp. The presentation is interesting, on a large tray, served with spongy sourdough taco-like disks. And the food was pretty good. But what it wasn't was, hot. It ranged from vaguely warm to tepid. The bread kind of had a texture like carpet foam and looked like it. And the service was relatively fast, but no-one checked up during the meal to see if we needed anything until the end. I don't know if my experience was typical, and I'm willing to be convinced. I would have enjoyed it a lot more with the above corrected. See what other diners say.

Great meal with a fun ambiance. I love bringing people here to enjoy the novel cuisine (for most) and fun atmosphere. The value is also exceptional. Great for vegetarians or meat lovers! The wines also combine well with the meals. All in all, one of my favorites!

An accidental finding, as we were going to the jazz club across the street. Saw the crowd and figured it must be pretty good. It was really good food, good service , quite reasonable and fun.

I've eaten in many Ethiopian restaurants before. I've never had cold injera served to me until eating here. Not cool. The chicken dishes were OK but the beef and lamb had too much sauce and not enough meat. The service was pleasant enough though. However we will not be back--have had better elsewhere.

Portions were unbelievably small on the 6-item messob platter we had for 2. Gluten-free injera was delicious but we each only had about 10 bites of food to enjoy with it. Also they were out of their cheesecake dessert at 6pm on a Friday. I'll be trying one of the other Ethiopian restaurants in the city next time. Worth a try if you are in the Uptown neighborhood but otherwise skip it.

Loved this place ! I had not had Ethiopian food in over 20 years and did not know what to expect . Our waitress could not have been nicer, described our options , recommended the honey wine to me (yumm) , guided me thru the vegetarian and non vegetarian options . It couldn't have gone better - I started with a wonderful salad of tomatoes , onions , cucumbers and seeded strips of jalapeños - game changer ! Plus the spongy bread was amazing which used to eat the curry chicken , collards , lentils . I must say that as soon as we walked in , I knew it would be an A+ experience - it smelled so good . We will return , there are so many appealing things to try .

Very similar to Indian food in both ingredients and style of cuisine, but it has all it's own unique flavors and textures. A lovely place to eat and something that would be very hard to experience unless you take a trip to visit Africa. Worthwhile and enjoyable with a staff that treated us well on a birthday celebration dinner. Recommended highly.

This was my first visit to Demera. My wife and I were celebrating her birthday: dinner and a show at the Uptown Underground. We are vegetarian with heavy vegan leanings. Demera's vegetarian offerings are delicious. We had the messob full veg sampler. MMMM!! And yes...it's a lot of food! HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking this place out if you love spicy ethnic food.

Demera was my first time trying Ethiopian food, and I was not disappointed! The server was very helpful walking my friends and I through the menu, as none of us were familiar with the dishes. We went with the family-style dinner, which was excellent for our group of 5. It included both vegetarian and meat options, all of which were flavorful and delicious.

It was a bit expensive, but definitely worth it!

I was a bit disappointed! Been to Demera plenty of times and always loved it. Wanted to take my brother there for his birthday. We had made reservations for lunch and I specified it was for a bday. It was 2pm on a Sunday, the restaurant was empty. The service was extremely slow, we had to ask for water and our order wasn't right. I asked for meat without bones, there were bones, instead of shrimp we got beef, and there was 7 of us so 3 pieces of ingera (spelling?) wasn't enough! The waitress never checked on us. And I guess I'm used to being spoiled by other Open Table restaurants where they make me feel special for an event I'm celebrating!love Ethiopian food but from now to Ethiopian Diamond I go.
