Delhi Diner is the place to go in Albany, California for original and authentic Indian cuisine. Just stepping into the dining room will make you feel as if you have traveled to a caf in Delhi itself. Many people have come to enjoy the lamb biryani, perfectly seasoned with just the right blend of herbs and spices. Others at Delhi Diner opt for the chicken tandoor, which is tender and succulent.
This is the perfect restaurant to hold a quick business meeting, or to take the family out for a cultural experience for dinner. There is enough variety on the menu at Delhi Diner to appeal to everyone, from meat lovers to vegetarians.
Very pretty restaurant; service is friendly and personal. The food itself is excellent and offered in 4 different degrees of spiciness. There are many items not generally found in Indian restaurants. There is no tipping as there is a service charge included. Quiet enough for conversation.
I've been really loving this place for a couple years. Mostly we get take-out from here, but when we do visit it is always great. The Tandoori Lamb Rib Chops are my favorite item on the menu. They have an Indian viognier that I really like.
Everything we ordered was first rate. The restaurant was very pleasant and roomy. Service was good although sometimes disoriented as different servers were waiting on us. They need to change their name since this is not a diner but a full fledged restaurant.
Hospitality and service at this warm, attractively decorated restaurant, is excellent!
It's not fair for me to review their food. I don't like Indian cuisine. Having said that, the chicken curry was decent as was the onion naan. Another dish, with requested medium spicy seemed way to hot; but I'm not a good judge. Soups were okay, though nothing special.
Delhi Diner has been my restaurant "find" for 2015.
It has become one of my favorites, and our family of 5 foodies chose it for our Christmas eve dinner. We were delighted. The food was superb as usual, and the service was excellent.
We had a mix of omnivores and pescatarians and we all loved the food we received.
Outstanding Indian restaurant. Comprehensive menu. Friendly service. If with a group, try the family naan.
Another great experience at this restaurant. Introduced to two friends and all of us enjoyed our choices. Our waiter had a great personality and that adds a little more uumph to the experience. Keep up the good work!
I recently had the extreme pleasure of being introduced to Delhi Diner by a colleague who lives in the neighborhood and is soon to return to her native land. We met on a Saturday for lunch. The food is AMAZING and the service impeccable and very attentive. The mango lassis were a great compliment to the spiciness of our food and the kheer (rice pudding) for desert was just the ultimate crowning final touch. We all had a delightfully delicious meal to celebrate a special occasion. Can't wait to go back!
This was our second visit (first one was for dinner & this was for lunch - had problems with website so unable to do first review). We love the lovely, spacious room, color scheme and décor; it is warm and inviting.
First visit, we ordered goat curry, baigan bharta, plain naan and white rice with mild spices. This was a treat because one of us has restrictions with anything spicy and this was cooked to order, but still very flavorful and tasty and we made a dent in the amount we ate. It was also great not to have the food swimming in oil which usually happens when we’ve eaten at other (less expensive) Indian/Pakistani restaurants. The prices are reasonable for the quality of food (comparable to Ajanta’s but far better service and ambiance). The portions were good and we ate amply and still had some to take home.
We were introducing this restaurant to friends and the table ordered lamb curry, baigan bharta, sambar special and saag paneer (Indian spicy and it was perfection for that person). All of us enjoyed the our meals and it was a quiet and relaxing meal.
The reception from wait staff was warm and friendly and our server, Amita’s personality and just the right amount of attentiveness completed the dining experience and made for a memorable evening. The server at lunch was a polite young man who was equally attentive, but the dinner service was much busier so we were quite impressed with the service received.
Our only regret is that it took us this long to discover this lovely restaurant, but look forward to rectifying this. Whenever we are in the area, this would be a restaurant of choice as long as this standard is maintained. Keep up the good work.
Very tasty food and great ambiance here. The staff are so attentive and lovely. The portion sizes aren't as big as the usual Indian food restaurants I've been to, but I think we noticed that more because the food was so yum.
Going to Delhi Diner is like being invited to a Royal family's home and kitchen. Subhas (the owner) makes sure that his guests have the best dinning experiance ever. From the quality and taste of all the dishes to the services provided during your visit to this diner will be the best one you ever had. A 5+ star without any questions for Delhi Diner. Thank you Subhas Ji for your dedication and great service.
We introduced our friends to Delhi Diner, the food is interesting and there are great vegan and vegetarian menu items. In particular Paneer dishes with tofu options as well as the more traditional non meat dishes. Especially good was the naan breads.
I really enjoyed eating dinner here. All the dishes we had were delicious. I especially liked the mixed vegetable dish on the specials menu in a very scrumptious white sauce, recommended by the owner/ Maitre'D. He adjusted the amount of spiciness for us as some in the group liked a lot of spice and others not much spice. It has wonderful decor and is very pleasant! You can park about half way between the restaurant and the theatre and walk to theatre afterwards. When we arrived at 5PM we had the place to ourselves but by the time we left, it was packed.
Went with a group of 9, some of whom were new. We didn't know what their tastes were like
and how to order. The wait staff were not very helpful (language?), more by omission than commission. The food I tasted was pretty good, but we probably ordered too many appetizers,
not having the amount described very well . . . .paratha (?) was much too big!. Also not everyone knew was what on the table, and never saw some dishes. Some people were served beer without being told it was the 'huge' ($8) size bottle. So we ended up spending much more than we expected...but got some leftovers to take home.
Very nice food overall, though the naan I got was a little doughy and not that tasty. If you're adventurous, you may want to try the Jaljeera, which wins the prize for the strangest non-alcoholic drink I've ever tasted anywhere (and I've tried many salt lassis and various other unusual drinks). I couldn't quite decide whether it was wonderful or awful, but it was certainly unforgettable.
Subha and his wife have a warmth and welcoming manner that is outstanding. Music was gentle and not intrusive at all, and added to the Indian feel of this attractive restaurant. Owners are ready to provide different levels of spiciness, from non- to mild to hot for those who like it.
Don't miss the live Indian music performed Friday and Saturday nights in the restaurant. It's a very nice touch to accompany the delicious food.
A MUST for Indian food lovers in the East Bay! We sampled the veggie pakoras, which were yummy and enough for two, easily. My fave was the shrimp tikka masala, if you can eat dairy. For tandoori BBQ, the lamb is excellent, and comes sizzling on plate, tableside. If you're gluten intolerant (or grain intolerant as well), the gluten-free naan is something to skip. The recipe is currently very dry and needs much help with sauces. They are working on improving the moisture and flavor/texture.
The rich colors of India envelopes the space—a dark gold tone, reminiscent of turmeric spice, paints building and invites in patrons. Very lux!
Overall, it's great spot for delicious Northern Indian cuisine—also great for vegans or vegetarians!
If you enjoy Indian food, Delhi Diner is a wonderful addition to Solano Avenue ~ even dishes you can find other places are a lot better here, and there are many specials each night. We especially love the Sev Puri appetizer ~
Dehi Diner tries very very hard. However, on a Thursday night last week I was a bit disappointed, Atmosphere dull (whereas Britt Marie's next door was hopping!) and the food mediocre. The chef should eat at Ajanta where food and atmosphere meld into a delicious and charming whole! Fresher spices, tandoori with more than a few vegetables soaked in oil and more enticing specials would help! And while the owner seemed to feel his wine was superior--I tasted at least 4 reds---they all tasted about the same--thin and dull. Sorry! I know they are trying hard....
A terriffic meal. A little pricy, but you get great ambiance, great food, nice owner. Want to go back for sure. Worth the trip.
excellent new place, certainly doesn't feel like a diner. Friendly, warm atmosphere, good food. Recommended.
We had a family Valentine Day dinner here with not much information on quality of food. We all know and love good food and are big fans of Indian cuisine. So, much to our delight this restaurant was up to our standards. The owner is wonderful, we all agree we would certainly be back.
What a find this restaurant is. The food is delicious and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere is wonderful, with live Indian music on the weekends. The decor is very tasteful but interesting. My partner claims he doesn't like Indian food, but the owner made sure it wasn't too spicy for him and now he's eager to go again. This was the best Indian food I've ever had. Beyond all that, this place has something I always enjoy and that's a good neighborhood drop-in feel. It doesn't hurt that the owner makes everyone feel like they're part of the family. Don't hesitate to give this place a try!!!
Dehli Diner is a perfect restaurant for me and my friends. They enjoy spicy food and I need my food really mild. This restaurant caters to each individual diner and everything tastes delicious.
What a wonderful addition to the neighborhood!
We were worried about yet another Indian place on Solano, but our anxieties were misplaced. Dehli Diner has a unique take on Northern Indian cuisine with new (to me) tastes. Lots of interesting -- and delicious -- specials round out a traditional menu.
Everything we had on New Year's Eve was extraordinary -- from the crunchy crab samosas and silky tomato soup to pepper curry chicken and two different kinds of lamb.
Desserts are a particularly pleasant surprise. My favorite was the homemade butterscotch ice cream!
The ambiance is also warm and friendly, making it a great place to hang out or eat any night of the week.
Excellent, authentic. Owner charming and very attentive to every detail.
