Not worth the money
Fantastic location, food and service. We celebrated a birthday at Del Mar and were treated with very special attention. The cheese selection was delicious but the paella was outstanding. Desserts were all fantastic.
This is a great location and a fun people-watching spot with awesome decor. As with many Wharf restaurants, you leave feeling the experience was a bit overpriced and impersonal. We asked for a window seat and were told that was for larger parties (okay, but there were tons of 4 tops open throughout the entire time we were dining). We ended up squished into a row of crowded two-tops where, because of the loud overall noise in the space, we found it impossible to enjoy our date just the two of us. Instead we ended up feeling forced to make small talk with the table on either side of us, since we could all overhear each others' conversations anyhow. The service was bumbling. For the price, I feel that the main courses were over-priced and uninspired, even for typical Spanish cuisine. The small plates may be more the way to go - the cocktails were good, the romaine salad and croquettes were delicious. The espresso martini, madeira and churros definitely stole the show for dessert.
Del Mar is an excellent restaurant with superb service and excellent cuisine. We enjoyed a selection of cheeses to start. The tuna appetizer was light and flavorful. We also loved the Branzino preparation - flavorful and cooked to perfection. To be honest, our only complaint was that there are 6 tables (tables for two only) located in the front of the house - with unpadded and very uncomfortable chairs - and we were seated at one of these tables. We checked - every other table in the house (and there are many) have padded chairs/seats. We just feel that if you're looking to enjoy excellent fine dining in DC, why should your experience be compromised with an uncomfortable chair? It's an easy fix, which we hope the restaurant can make, and we'll definitely try it again (hopefully, with a more comfortable seat!).
My experience was amazing at Delmar from the second I walked into the door. The hostess was the nicest person I think I have ever encountered in Washington DC. I loved our waitress she was so sweet and she explained the menu very efficiently and made amazing recommendations. The manager saw that we were taking a while to pick out a bottle of wine from their very extensive, global wine list and came over to help us pick out a wine. It was an excellent choice for what our taste was and good pairing for the food. The service was great amazing and not over bearing. Will definitely need to go back and try the seafood paella or Branzino.
We were seated on patio where sun was shining in, so we sweated our way through dinner.
Our server could have been more attentive & explained the menu, but instead we had to ask.
Food is good, but definitely not worth what we paid. I understand sometimes it’s more about the experience as a whole, but this was far from a great experience.
Everything was great
Inventive and delicious Tapas in an electric atmosphere coupled with attentive and professional service...what more is there? Look for value on the wine list which was interesting, varied but sometimes mispriced.
Everything was perfect for our anniversary. Staff, food and atmosphere was exquisite!
Get the paella!
I have been a big fan of Fabio Trabocchi for years, from the times of Maestro. This restaurant does not disappoint. My only comment is about their wine list, which is a little too pretentious: only a handful of wines under $100 with the majority of bottles going from $150 to several hundreds.
I understand it’s a high end restaurant, but it’s also a tapas place where you should be able to have lunch drinking good wine without breaking the bank.
It is easy to have a fantastic wine list when you choose within that price range. The real ability is to find (and recommend) your guests the truly great find that has a great price/quality ratio.
Just my opinion....
Absolutely fabulous place along the waterfront. The food, service, and wine was magnificent. We had a wonderful time there.
Once we were seated it was a wonderful evening, the food was great, the decor was beautiful; however, the people at the front desk leave a bit to be desired. We showed up at 4:30 wanting to make a 7:00 dinner reservation for 2 later that night. We were told they were completely full until 9:15 pm and that all restaurants would be booked because that was prime dinner hour. So I grudgingly made a dinner reservation for the following evening at 8:15 ( that was the earliest they could do). We walked out and my husband said try Open Table. Sure enough I was able to get a table for two at 7 pm later that evening just as we originally planned. We get there for dinner and the restaurant was not only not full, it was very empty. By the time we left at 8:30 the restaurant was STILL half empty. I know restaurants try to give people the impression that they're in high demand but this was ridiculous.
Also, we requested a table upstairs and outside on their balcony. We climbed 4 tiers of stairs to get there and I saw two tables at the edge overlooking the water and boats. I asked if we could have one of those tables but I was told if we wanted that then we would have to walk down all the stairs again to ask the maitre'd and then come back upstairs. Pretentious!
From the moment we arrived, I knew we were in good hands. The staff at Del Mar had, unlike other restaurants, actually read the detail in the Open Table reservation and knew that a member of our party was celebrating her birthday. As we checked in, the young lady at the desk acknowledged that fact and greeted us with a Happy Birthday! As requested, we also received, at the conclusion of our dinner, a lovely bit of key lime pie with a lit candle. A perfect way to end a perfect evening! Thank you, Del Mar!
Excellent food and cocktails. A must visit if you're at the Wharf in D.C.
This was our 50th anniversary and birthday dinner so a special evening. We go to the restaurant and the host insisted that we did not have a reservation. I explained to her that we did and that it was through open table. Again she insisted that we did not. I was growing irritated and said this is ridiculous. Then after about 5 minutes of back and forth - she said oh yes here it is. They did send a glass of cava to us to appease for the mistake. However, the evening was somewhat spoiled by her confusion. The waiter however was excellent. She apologized as we left - but how do you not find an OT reservation that was made in advance and confirmed the day before.
It is always a treat to go to Del Mar. Like other Trabocchi restaurants, the ambience, presentation and service are top notch. A delicious and beautiful dining experience.
Great ambience. Amazing Mediterranean menu. Order the fresh fish for two.
Birthday dinner - chose Delmar because I knew the food would be fantastic & service is always on point. We were seated upstairs which was quieter but also lacked the buzz of downstairs which I love. Would always choose main floor dining room in future. Service was excellent, we shared whole branzino as our main and it was delicious. Served table-side, filleted & deboned. Another great night at Delmar!
Excellent Spanish tapas combined with great wine list in DC’s Wharf area. Wonderful location for special event or romantic night out.
Amazing food and service. We opted to eat outside and while nice, the seating is in the middle of the drop off/turnaround for the district wharf intercontinental so it is busy and not terriblly desirable. So eat indoors if given the option. Having said that, the food & drinks were amazing and service impeccable. We had the shrimp, cheese board, potatoes, tomato salad and payella. Everything was delicious. Our waiter suggested the churros and they were like nothing I've ever tasted. We paired them with the dulce de leche ice cream. Phenomenal!!
Incredible. Lives up to the hype. Best paella I've had in my entire life.
The food and service were excellent but it is pricey. We ate upstairs and the atmosphere was pleasant and quieter than downstairs which is much busier and louder. We used valet parking because it was impossible to find parking elsewhere in the area. Overall, we had a wonderful dining experience.
A wonderful experience for our 31st Wedding Anniversary. The staff made it special for us - thank you so very much. The food is excellent and the service was right on par. We felt it was a bit on the expensive side but we did enjoy all aspects of our experience.
This is a gorgeous destination restaurant. The food was all very good but the desserts were exemplary.
The service was friendly and adequate but not of the caliber one would expect at this price point.
Also , our reservation time was incorrect due to no fault of ours, which made our entire afternoon incredibly stressful. This was a birthday celebration and the staff that answered the phone was rude , ineffective and badly trained overall.
Again, at this price point this treatment is unconscionable.
We were not expecting Inn at Little Washington standards but this was more of what you would expect from a chain restaurant.
The food and service in this restaurant are absolutely flawless! I dine here often and bring others. One could not get finer tapas in Spain and the sea urchin is heavenly. All fish equally magnificent and desserts sublime.
Outstanding service. Our waiter made our evening very special with extra touches, detailed knowledge of the menu, and full attention.
Superb service and great food. Not inexpensive, but worth it given the quality of this establishment.
Fine dinning Ioved the tasty small portions, my male guest did not. However, the place is way too loud,
I have eaten here before and everything was over the top outstanding. This time 3 out of 6 tapas were just average —very disappointing. Always happy to pay for excellent food, but this experience was not great. Also $38 to self park for 3 hours while having dinner is excessive. Too many other fabulous restaurants in the city to try.
The ambiance was great and the food was delicious. The portion sizes were so small, however, that it's hard to consider Del Mar a practical dinner option except for very special occasions. The staff was very accommodating and helpful.
We booked a dinner at Del Mar for our fortieth anniversary. The meal was delicious and the service was outstanding as always. The manager, Ms. Paris, was especially warm and welcoming. We were, however, quite disappointed to learn upon arrival that the outdoor balcony overlooking the water was closed for a private event. We had specifically requested the outdoor balcony for dinner. We very much wish that we had been notified ahead of time that such was the case. We were shown to an outdoor area behind the yacht club which is nice but lacks a water view and has a more casual ambiance than we were hoping for to celebrate a milestone event. We chose to dine indoors instead but were very disappointed since the weather that evening was so delightful. When making a reservation diners should be aware that requesting outside seating will not necessarily mean that they will be seated on the balcony.
I would definitely recommend Del Mar to my friend. It is the most expensive Spanish restaurant in DC area. The food was good, but nothing exceptional or unique like in Barcelona, Span. The service from entire stall are excellent. I think I paid the high price for dining in a remarkable setting.
Our Server was absolutely excellent and very knowledgeable. We felt very pampered and enjoyed a wonderful anniversary dinner. The complimentary champagne and dessert was very nice. The food was all absolutely perfect. Can’t wait to dine here again!
Best paella in DC. Hard to say which was better Del Mar or Curate in Asheville, given both have Basque influences. Phenomenal dinner well worth the price.
Very enjoyable Sunday brunch. Unique food choices, excellent service. Easy valet parking. Pleasant ambiance.
Excellent food, excellent service---It was our Anniversary and they gave us complimentary Champaign to start the meal and a special dessert to finish. Very classy!!!!
everything was fine with exception of not receiving any response about our party increasing to 7 following numerous telephone messages over three days.
the hostess was able to make the seating for 7 but it would have been reassuring to know in advance since parties were coming from different directions.
