Death By Tequila
If you sit outside you will be cold as there is no heating. The quality of the NY strip beef was poor.
For the food and ambiance it can feel over priced.
Food was okay, nothing memorable. Service was AWFUL. They weren't busy and seemed fully staffed so there wasn't an excuse for drinks and food production to be painfully slow. We had to get the manager's attention to order more food. Really loud inside because the music was turned up.
Unique, tasty offerings. Not your “stuff yourself with chips, rice, and beans” kind of Mexican place.
Apps were amazingly done.!! Drinks were also on point.
Great margaritas! Enjoyed the salsa and guacamole app, empanadas and carnitas. Fun spot.
Service was great and so were the food and drinks. I little drafty and pricey but good for a date.
Good food, great drinks, a bit annoying the table has a time limit and once we received our food and ate they asked us to hurry up as others were waiting for the table.
First time and can’t wait to go again! We wanted fresh, local Mexican-inspired food and this place delivered. From the appetizers to our meal to our drinks, everything was fresh and full of flavor. Our server was friendly, engaging, and attentive, and the indoor/outdoor atmosphere was spacious and inviting. Highly recommend!
Cocktails were scrumptious, lobster roll was delicious the dozen Oysters were fresh but, seemed tiny.
Great food and service was wonderful and welcoming.
By far one of my most favorite restaurants!! Will definitely be eating here again!!
Original and tasty menu, I like being able to choose several small dishes. The margaritas are fresh and perfect.
Excellent service. Great margaritas. And the food is delicious and reasonably priced.
I really do love good and fresh and nice new twists with any restaurant. And if all the other parts of dining out were in place here this would have been great.
Right off the service was bad. I get the challenges with help these days and this guy did show up so my criticism would be with the manager and owner for not doing their job and teaching their staff the basics.
I don’t need a story about how great the tequila is or treated like its my first time dining out. 10 min for a glass of water? 15 min for chips and salsa? Then assumed we didn’t want dinner and left us for another 10 min without asking?
I had plenty of time to watch the whole crew and clearly nobody there had a sense of service.
Get some staff trained, axe the DJ, step it up to the level the chef is providing.
Overall good experience
Great service OK food.
Great food and drinks. Awesome service. The music was way too loud. Unable to have conversations with our group.
Margaritas were great as usual - short rib and carnitas tacos were great - soft shell crab was a little off - waitperson seemed to leave us after drink orders but we were eventually rescued by another waitperson
This was our first time dining with DxT, and definitely won’t be the last. Our waitress Isabelle was nothing short of amazing, from her attentiveness to her recommendations. This was a great experience!
We were really looking forward to trying this place out and SO disappointed. We had reservations for outdoor seating, but they had nothing available when we came at our reserved time that we had to wait 45 minutes. Worst part was that the food was truly flavorless for being so pricey, and you will be charged extra for ordering tequila neat off of their tequila list. I’ve been to places that have charged for large ice cubes but this was a first!
We had an excellent meal and drinks for a birthday celebration and everything was amazing. We had the salsa combo, shrimp ceviche, shrimp quesadilla, pork taco and beef taco. We will be going back again.
Could be good but hit or miss service and food quality
Both the food and drinks were incredible! I had the Guava Margarita and the Wildcat cocktail and both were very refreshing. The food had wonderful, fresh made flavors. Ambiance was great as well. Will definitely be back!
Very cute place. Very loud music inside but I actually enjoy that, just thought I should mention for those who don’t. Unfortunately the food was pretty bad. My friend and I ordered 4 items total and only liked one. They did have generous wine pours!
1. Queso Fundido w/chorizo - this was ok, chips weren’t great and queso was extremely oily. I couldn’t eat much at all as there was a large deep visible pool on top of the entire serving dish besides the very corners
2. Ceviche - my friend liked this, I don’t eat seafood so I don’t have details
3. Carnitas taco - carnitas was very dry, couldn’t taste any sauce or anything and somehow even though it was dry it was sitting in a giant pool of oil, which seemed to be the theme of the meal. I’m not afraid of a little grease, I love taco shop tacos, but this was crazy without the flavor to go with. I asked for hot sauce and was given Tabasco. What San Diego Mexican restaurant, let alone an upscale one, gives people Tabasco as hot sauce for their tacos?!
4. Black angus short rib taco - my friend ordered this so I don’t have details but he did not enjoy it.
Never been DBT since my move to Carlsbad, but finally was able to try it this weekend. I had an awesome time meeting other people. The drinks that Monique recommended were amazing. Love the margaritas and all. Monique is an awesome server, she’s polite courteous and always smiling she’s a great server :))
Amazing tacos, tortillas, ceviche and margs!
Great server, wish I remembered her name, she suggested alterations to our order that she thought would better suit our group and she was spot on. She was on it with getting additional rounds of drinks and so patient with a great attitude. With our large group and a baby, she totally nailed it. We’ll be back.
It's awesome to finally be getting more authentic Baja style food in North County. Cocktails were great with fresh squeezed juice; salsa and guac were unique and fantastic, food was wonderful. (Except the short rib tacos which sort of sucked). But overall, great friendly service with outside seating, great food and beautiful cocktails. Wonderful night!
We had such high hopes but was greatly disappointed. The drinks are delicious, definitely worth coming back for them. But the food and service were both sub par. The food was lacking flavor and quite overpriced for the quality.
Tacos were excellent! I highly recommend the carnitas taco and the rice. Portions are very generous.
Loved it all. Our waiter (I think Dominic) was so wonderful and kind, and fun! The we shopped for an afternoon and returned to Andrew the bar manager, who took great care of us. We will be back! Loved it all!! Anne and Shirin!!!!
Great food and drinks
Great date spot. Drinks and food were fantastic.
Excellent drinks . Eclectic food choices. Try the himacci and clams and mussels . Both are very good . We really enjoyed our evening at DBT and will return soon
I'm not sure if it was this particular night, but the food was VERY disappointing! My husband and I first experienced Death by Tequila a couple years ago, and WOW! We have been saying for the longest time we HAD to come back. After all that time, we finally visited last night. First, I ordered the shrimp quesadilla tacos. Three tacos arrive, and two of the tacos had a sliced shrimp and a half, and one of the tacos had ONE sliced shrimp. I don't understand why it would leave the kitchen this way.. Second, my husband ordered the Tomahawk dish, we seriously waited another 40 minutes after I ate my tacos.. after waiting ALL THAT TIME, the meal was completely DRY and TOUGH. Seriously, it was inedible that my husband ordered some more sauce on the side to help chew the meat, but he gave up and left the rest on the plate. Imagine how disappointed you would be. We ended up leaving hungry still and bought taco bell on the way back (funny, but that's the sad part). The waiter was very kind the whole time and knew the conditions of the food and how much longer we waited.. but if it was not for the drinks or music, I would have treated that night completely different.. I woke up the next day thinking about how much we spent for dinner and still feeling disappointed how our dinner actually went, I felt I had to write my review. Its VERY SAD to say, Death by Tequila is not what we remembered and not sure if we can recommend this restaurant like we once did...
Service was great! Drinks were great! But the food was really expensive for the quality of ingredients and execution. Ordered a Cesar salad and the lettuce was old and tasted dirty, had multiple stale chips that were brought with our salsa sampler, one tortilla of a taco had a big chunk missing (could tell it was handmade and piece broke off but at first it looked like a bite had been taken out) and one tortilla with a taco was so hard it snapped in half when we attempted to eat it.The restaurant definitely has potential…maybe it was a bad night. It’s sucks spending that amount of money to get poor execution or ingredients.
Was really disappointed by my experience at Death by Tequila in Encinitas. Had reservations for inside was put at table outside right in front of their dj. We could barely hear each other and it was beyond uncomfortable. We asked the hostess if we could sit else where she said no, and didn't try to remedy the situation. The music got louder and we asked again to please put us anywhere else, and we were told you can't switch tables and then we would be put at the end of the hour and half waitlist for a different table. Even though we had reservations. Having been in the industry myself I was really
taken aback by the way we were spoken to and treated. Horrendous horrendous customer service and experience.
The noise level with added DJ music made it impossible to have a conversation. Everyone enjoyed their cocktails but there were hits and misses with the food. The salsa’s, empanadas, smoked sweet potatoes and quesadillas were all tasty. The ceviche was just ok. The Cameron Michelada was not. The sauce was tasty but the 5 “local shrimp” were tiny and not worth the $22price tag. Overall just ok for our party of 4.
Good and service were great, food was meh.
