About this restaurant

In 1962, Johnny Harlowe made the jump from the silver screen to chef and owner of Dear John’s. Convinced by his pal Frank Sinatra, Johnny opened the iconic spot just a ways down from Sony Studios on Culver Blvd. It became the watering-hole for the Hollywood elite with Sinatra often in the corner playing the piano against the dark brick walls once lined with portraits of famous John’s. Seasoned chefs and entrepreneurs Hans Röckenwagner and Josiah Citrin have teamed up to re-open Dear John’s with an updated classic American menu and old-school cocktail list.

Salmon and chicken parm were very tasty. Pricy for served a la carte. Lighting very dark we were scolded by management for using our phones to read the menu. Room was very loud. Between the loud music and the conversations in the room, you would have to be a lip reader to hold a conversation. I don't think I will be returning.

I like the space and the old time ambiance. I’d prefer it a little less dark. I would describe the food as old fashioned comfort food that is nicely done. I like the Sinatra in the background. I wish it was a little quieter for the sake of conversation. Will definitely go back.

Waiter was friendly and had great recommendations. Cocktails were interesting and good, especially the Vesper. Appetizers were oysters, delicious with very tasty sauces and JCL Bougie Tots were unique and good. The Sand Dabs and Chicken Parm were excellent, so was the dessert. Great wines by the glass, not often do I see Pride Mountain by the glass

We had a truly horrible experience at Dear John’s. Sadly, regardless of the good yet pricey food and lively room, our meal was ruined by the manager of the restaurant who was rude and abusive to us. He began by interrupting our conversation when we were seated in a threatening and scolding manner because we were using the lights on our phones to see the menu in the almost dark restaurant, which he claimed was “against the rules.” Later, when someone at our table questioned him about why he was so rude, he actually physically assaulted our friend. No restaurant should ever treat its guests in this manner. Not only is this incident outrageous but it was dangerous. Shame on the owners for allowing this type of behavior.

The value they once had is sadly no longer available at this restaurant. Both steaks were overcooked and the Cesar salad had no anchovies.
