De Novo Ratings and Reviews
DeNovo has it all! The food is fabulous. Our waiter was attentive, efficient and gave welcomed advice on a food and wine paring. The decor glitters and sparkles. We got a table near the window and had a beautiful view of Columbus Commons. The brussels sprouts appetizer is delish!
Jenny was our server and was outstanding. Since we were going to a show nearby, she said she would have us out the door half an hour before curtain and succeeded. Two of us had the lobster mac 'n'cheese which had gotten rave patron reviews, but ours was very dry although did have a good flavor. Beer and wine selection so-so. Despite this, liked the setting and service and will go back. Great location!!
We've been to DeNovo several times and have always loved it. This visit was a little disappointing. A few things to note....We got a bottle of wine, and were offered no taste of it prior to serving. Found that odd. I ordered my salad with no cucumbers or black beans, and it came with both. The server noticed me picking them out but never offered me a new salad, or a discounted bill. My fiance had kangaroo, and found it to be overcooked and a bit chewy. Overall disappointing this time, but because of past good experiences I feel it's worth another shot.
First time eating here. Our waiter was phenomenal and really helpful with drink suggestions. The food was good and we appreciated the small plate options for most of the entrees. My only complaint was that our bill didn’t reflect the prices on the menu. We ordered dessert (Godiva lava cake) where the menu said $8.00 but our bill listed it at $12 and we didn’t notice until after we left. The ambience of the restaurant was amazing and I would go back for that (and the Baked Apple Mule) alone!
I am a regular, but even with a reservation. we had to wait 15 minutes and then were asked to sit in the bar area. Once we sat down and received the waiter's attention, service and food was very good. I? guess I have to allow for everyone to have an off day.
This place was all about the presentation, but there was little substance. The ambiance was incredible to the eye, but included greasy floors, mismatched and less than functional tables/settings, the food was described well but fell extremely flat upon eating it. Short ribs were extremely fatty, beyond any I've ever tasted and lacked flavor. The Whipped potatoes beneath it were not whipped, nor were they fully cooked or seasoned. The de Novo pasta was boring and over-cooked, with completely bland chicken on top and worthless micro-greens that didn't fit the dish, nor offer much in the way of presentation. If this place continues to put their money on the ambiance and avoids inspiration from the kitchen, it won't be around long.
Had a great experience at the old location (date night with hubby). Decided to invite girl friends (from out of town) to the new location. Appetizers took way long. When they came out my crab cakes weren't hot. Honestly believe someone forgot to bring them out. A very nice woman (presume the manager) stopped by our table and had more prepared. They were better but dinner was very disappointing. Menu has changed since date night and that's okay. Overall, very disappointing. Should have taken my out of town guests to Easton
The customer service stood out to me . Our waiter was always making sure we had enough to drink and gave a very good recommendation on the entree that we order. The food was delicious...everything properly cooked and great portions. A definite find for us here in Columbus and we will be returning in the future!
DeNovo was delightful! We were seated right by the window overlooking the park. The Cheese plate was elegant and excellent. My daughter's Sea Bass was cooked to perfection. I ordered the bistro portion of the Lobster Mac & Cheese which was prepared wonderfully, seasoned right on the mark. We had a wonderful server who took care of us with care, and took the time to chat and make us feel truly welcome. We will always look for a reason to return and visit again!
Our server had no people skills at all and was sweating a lot. He barely checked on us and I got to a point where I didn’t even want him to come back. Hostesses seemed sad to be at work. The food was alright. Worst part was that he charged my card for a different table’s meal which was twice the cost of ours. This was Friday and it’s now Sunday evening - I’m still waiting for the money to come back to my account. That meal was supposed to be a nice night about for my husband’s birthday and the whole thing sucked and put a damper on the evening. I thought it would be nice to try somewhere new, but that was a bad choice. We will stick with Cameron Mitchell restaurants for special occasions because I’ve never had a bad experience at any of them. I will NOT go back and would not recommend to anyone.
We have been going here for years before any show we happen to see. This time was Trevor Noah... We reserved, got seated quickly. Food was delicious! We were there a little over an hour and enjoyed the atmosphere and wine! Server wasn't fantastic but she did her job. Only downside was my card got charged twice. I made contact regarding it and have to call back when it's not in pending state. Frustrating I even have to deal with it. As long as it gets cleared up I'll definitely be back and recommend.
Service is rather slow. They never seemed to be in much of a hurry to make a first touchbase at the table. Food is very good, but unless I am in the area, I would not really think of coming back. It restaurant would benefit from additional soft surfaces to absorb the noise.
De NOVO Bistro & Bar is just around the block from the Ohio Theatre, and it has become my favorite place to eat before seeing a show. On our latest visit, we took advantage of the $5 event parking under the Ohio State Capitol.
My friend and I both started with the de NOVO Bibb Salad. The ample amount of what the menu describes as "Fine Herb Vinaigrette" dressing had a thick, green, pea-soup appearance that did not appeal to me at all. I'm definitely not the most adventurous eater, and I was pleasantly surprised when I tasted the salad. The dressing is unique, with a hint of wasabi, horseradish, or another similar spice that may prove too rich for sensitive eaters.
I ordered the Lobster Mac & Cheese, described on the menu as sauteed Maine lobster, brie, Boursin, white cheddar, Parmesan, black truffles, herb Parmesan crumble, trumpet pasta and a hint of jalapeno. It was a rich, creamy grown up mac & cheese with an oh-so-subtle spicy kick. I ordered the "bistro" portion, and I gobbled up every morsel, but I was completely satisfied with serving size. I'm sure I would not have been able to finish an "entree" sized portion - and I am a large woman with a hearty appetite.
My dining companion ordered the Pan Roasted Mustard Glazed Salmon. The salmon was cooked to perfection.
We split a dessert of butterbeer ice cream, a butterscotch/caramel flavored treat inspired by the Harry Potter books. It was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. The service was top-notch and the restaurant's decor is whimsical, chic, and gorgeous. I am already planning my next visit.
My sister, boyfriend and I made reservations there Friday night for drinks and appetizers before going to the symphony. The reservation was for 7 o’clock and we arrived on time. There was no one at the host stand and we stood there for several minutes before anyone came or even acknowledged us. We were seated at a table that looked like it had been half set with two silverware setups and one glass. We then waited maybe 7 or 8 minutes before the server came and said she didn’t know we were there. We placed our drink and food order immediately letting her know we had to be out by a certain time. We didn’t even get our waters until being there for 25 minutes. The manger came and asked if everything was ok. We told her we had been waiting a while and were worried that our food might not arrive in time. She did apologize but said the steak salad probably wouldn’t be out in time, that the kitchen was backed up. The restaurant wasn’t even half full. The cocktails came, one was wrong and the other was just not good. The manager bought our drinks and was apologetic but the evening was incredibly disappointing. We’ve dined there several times but that was not a good experience.
My husband and I went there to eat before a show. It was our first time in their new location (they've been there about a year). Loved the decor, the view from our table, the ambiance. It was such a mild evening they had the doors up, so it was somewhat of an alfresco experience. The menu looked fantastic--we checked it online before going. Unfortunately, the food wasn't as good as we have had elsewhere. We started with the brusslel sprouts first--the waiter highly recommended them and we usually love them. They were so salty, we couldn't eat many. I got the see bass and the natural flavor was overwhelmed by the vegetables. My husband got a spicy pasta with chicken and he said that it was very bland. I would recommend it for drinks, though. My rose was wonderful and they seemed to have good wines and cocktails.
Eating at De Novo with the view of Columbus Commons, gives you a feeling of dining in an extraordinary space. The menu is eclectic and the presentation of our tasty entrees was excellent. Service was personable and efficient, both Jonah and his partnering trainee Josh appeared to be enjoying their part of our dining experience. Recommend this restaurant for any special or otherwise dining experience!

Took my mom and sister out for dinner. Though the menu can be pricey, you can order the "bistro" size on many items to make it more reasonable. And the smaller size is plenty of food. Mom loved the lobster mac & cheese; sis had the capellini cold dish and was happy with it. (Salmon came out overdone but our waiter, Rob, did a great job of getting it replaced immediately.) I had the purse pasta - also good, but I added chicken and it was a little overdone. Moreover, we had a pleasant meal with good service. I have friends who've been to DeNovo in the evening previously, on different occasions, and said the service was not good. I have not experienced that -- either during lunches when I am there, or this (first-time) evening visit. I should say, though, that there were not many guests in the dining room while I was there, either.
The hostess was clueless. I had two guests driving in from Pittsburgh which I told her. When they arrived she told them there wasn't a lone female waiting for guests. Fortunately they decided to look around and found me.
The service was okay. I think we may have had someone just learning. He was friendly but not very attentive and when we were ready for our check we were told he had left.
I had the glazed salmon which was good. My friend had the mile high quiche and it was very small.
We were celebrating a birthday and the ice cream was presented well.
My husband and I really loved this place and will definitely be back! He devoured his lobster mac & cheese, and I was extremely impressed with the salmon. The flavors were unexpected and the salmon was cooked perfectly. They also have a nice wine list with various uncommon selections. I asked to peek at their brunch menu, and it looked incredible! I'll be trying that soon!
Been wanting to try in the new location and finally had an occasion to go. Our server Tevin was probably the best part of the experience. Two thumbs up for him! Arrived before 6pm and asked to be seated near the open windows and were told no because those tables were all reserved... odd since most were open and we had reservations? Wine list both by glass and by bottle needs a bit of help. Cocktail list looked good though. Bibb salad was a bust and would be so easy to make not just a cup of lettuce and 2 walnuts that weren’t even candied like the menu said. Entrees were very good. Scallops and short ribs both well prepared and tasty. Disappointed at number of fruit flies around our table that took away from cool decor and ambiance. Constantly batting out of our faces. Will probably give it another try to see if it can be better.
We made a reservation and was seated on time. The service was excellent and the waiter was attentive. The waiter asked the occasion (theater) and made sure we were taken care of so we can get to the theater on-time. The food was fantastic, the ambiance was great, the wine selection was excellent. Overall, we had a very pleasurable experience.
Great place overlooking the park. The food is always fantastic and the staff is attentive and fun. We go there enough that they know what drinks we will order and they even brought us free drinks this time. Wonderful place and we go most times we are downtown. You can't beat it for after a show at the Ohio.
The food was superb as was the ambiance. The only issue I had was service. The servers were nice but I beleived overwhelmed by the pre-theater crowd. While I understand the restaurant was somewhat crowded, I had to ask for a server. Even after I asked and action was taken, it still took over 5 minutes to get someone. Ultimately, we ended up being served by a trainee whose trainer was largely absent. Both seemed to be nice people and the experience was not enough to sour me on the restaurant, I will be going back. It was simply not good service and some recognition (apology/recognition) would ahave been appropriate. This was not unique to me, there were others running down waitstaff for one reason or another. Get a better game plan.
