For years this was one of my favorite spots in Akron. The 21 vegetable salad is one of the most interesting starters you could come across anywhere. Overall, however, this is a place that has certainly lost its luster. There haven’t been any significant menu changes in years, the tables have a gummy residue, and the cocktail and wine list is uninspiring. Even the bathroom is looking a bit beat up. It seems as though they are at an inflection point where the question is, Do we spend the money and revamp the physical plant, update the menu and reinvigorate the staff or do we just let this slowly die on the vine and say we had a good run as a cosmopolitan restaurant in a small city? I hope it’s the former, but I’m not sure.
Wonderful place... this was about my 5th time there and I had a great time as usual.... if you are a foodie and you appreciate amazing chefs and a great ambiance this place is for you. Of course it's pricey but when was this level of service and food not pricey? My favorite meal? The filet mignon or salmon with foie gras is to die for!
I enjoyed D B A and would go again. The wine selection was adequate but not large, just enough of every type, I had a very good Malbec. The starters were just ok but the sauces for the starters were excellent. The calamari was a bit to dry and we also got a shellfish mixed plate, shrimp, oysters and lobster were good but the split crab claws were very dry. We both had a steak, I had the filet which was delicious and the toppings, I had blue cheese and my friend had something crusted. The entrees were excellent. The server was very attentive but not annoying so just about perfect.
I had been there 4 or 5 years ago and loved it, for some reason I never thought about going back. I was there last week and realized I had been making a huge mistake, this will definitely become a regular dinner spot! We went before a show during the week, I had the strip and she had the salmon. She had the "millions of peaches" martini and I had a great bourbon. Everything was fantastic!
Ordered the surf and turf and portion was incredibly small. One of the pieces of meat was nearly all fat too. They also mark up their wine by approximately 150%. Most restaurants only markup 100% on the high end. I left hungry and feeling like a paid a premium price for food that was nothing special. Won't be going back. Restaurant is in a nice location. A few simple fixes and some quality control would go a long way.
This was our first time at DBA, although we had been to Dante Tremont a few times. Also, we had visited the Akron location several times when it was Chrissie Hynde's VegiTerranean.
Our goal was to have a light dinner prior to a concert. The two of us shared everything except the wine. We ordered two glasses of chardonnay, two different salads, the seafood cocktail, and the tuna tartare, followed by a bourbon flight, a chocolate/pistachio dessert, and coffee.
We started outside, but it started to rain, so our server quickly got us set up again inside.
Everything about this dining experience was outstanding! The salads, which were quite large, were created from the freshest ingredients. One was an asparagus salad, and the other was a "21 vegetable" salad. Both were excellent. The two seafood dishes, quite different from each other but both delicious, were beautifully prepared and served. The dessert was one of the best either of us has ever tasted.
We chose our specific chardonnay based on the very helpful descriptions our server provided. The by-the-glass wine list is very good. The scotch and bourbon selections are excellent. For our three-pour bourbon flight, we selected from about 10 choices.
Our server, Nate, was excellent in all aspects. He was helpful with our numerous questions, and when he wasn't sure about one of our specific questions, he didn't hesitate to ask someone else for their input. He never "hovered" and was always unobtrusive, but somehow he always appeared right when we needed him for something. This is a special talent! Also, he struck the right balance between pleasant conversation and giving us our time for a special "date."
Ambience is also excellent - still a bit of the old industrial look from before, but now warmer feeling, with a nice balance of "cool" and cozy.
This is now one of our favorite restaurants in the entire Akron/Cleveland area. We will be back whenever we can!
A combination of factors contributed to make this only a so-so experience.
1. New wait staff
2. Error in beverage order
3. Not even a bread basket for 40 minutes
4. I ordered two main courses, requesting the vegetarian dish as an appetizer. They were served simultaneously...not good.
5. Since my beer was particularly tart, I couldn't enjoy the eggplant dish (my bad for forgetting to consider this).
6. My bolognese sauce was tasty...pasta was tough.
Overall the restaurant is nice, great staff and good food. My filet was over cooked the first time. Kitchen fixed it and manager compensated for the wait. Our twice baked potatoes were not fully cooked. Just minor details, but at this price point everything should be spot on. This was casual dining, where I though it was fine dining. We've been to Dante's in Tremont and that I guess is his fine dining restaurant.
Sadly has devolved since its opening. Creativity of its owner has been replaced by the mundane. No longer comes close to its Tremont parent. Even the dependable green spaghetti was a watery concotion almost inedible. Will drive to Cleveland.
Thank you DBA for seating us promptly at 5 and listening when we stated 1 in our party had a 6pm class. Not only was his dinner at the table, but all 6 meals were served! We did not feel rushed, the server did a phenomenal job. The food was outstanding (the Tuna Tartare was sooo yummy, as was the goat cheese cavatelli!). Thank you for a wonderful 1st experience to your restaurant. We will return (soon....I am craving the pasta!).
Best charcuterie board I've had. Great selection of meats and cheeses. The chicken liver mousse was outstanding. Dinner for her was the Cobia - very good. Dinner for me was the burger - interesting, well-prepared, but more of a "haute" burger (with brie cheese) than upscale bar food. Had our dessert later at the Speakeasy bar.
Our out-of-town guests are always impressed with the service and quality of the meals at D.B.A. We've hosted several business dinners here, because the atmosphere is sophisticated and different than anywhere else in Akron, and there is something on the menu for everyone's tastes.
Redemption for DBA. A little over a month I wrote a pretty harsh review after a dinner out with friends at DBA. With that out there, I think it's only fair to write one when the experience is top notch...a total 180° . Our waiter, JR, was on point all night and so was his team and so was the food. Now, we just need to convince our friends to come back with us.
