Food was good but the server was a bit snooty. His attitude effected the overall dining experience.
I have eaten at DB Bistro Moderne many times. It was a disappointment tonight. 3 of the dinner dishes arrived cold. The wrong appetizer was brought to one member of our party. One of of the servers poured water over the top of my water glass onto my hand. Although pettifours were listed on our bill, the restaurant neglected to serve them but did so on request. In general, the service was not smooth and seamless as it has been in the past. It made for a less than satisfactory experience.
The food was so much better than the other times I had been there. That said, the bread was ordinary to sub-par. Not warm and almost stale. The service was very pleasant but this restaurant is really very ordinary. Ambience is OK but not special. The service is fine, not special. The food is special but not displayed in any fantastic way. There is not many good restaurants in this area which is why it has stayed in business.
The burgers which is supposed to be their specialty were not great.
Very disappointed compared to last experience.
Only issue restaurant not packed and we were sat in back right next to people and there was room to seat people apart. Tables are very close to each orher!
We now eaten here twice: Sunday brunch and a Saturday dinner. Food is excellent and the 3 course prize fixe dinner is a wonderful value. The service is generally very good. The only complaint I have is that we waited a fairly long time for our check after dinner- our waiter never came back out, and eventually someone else came over to see if we wanted anything else. We were talking and were just beginning to wonder what happened to our check. Not sure what the glitch was. I would certainly return to the restaurant.
Quick pre theater meal. I didn’t realize what DB stood for. Once I did I was thrilled. We shared a beet salad and the amazing burger. And the fries were addicting. All was amazing and the side of mushrooms we ordered - and the forgot - they comped us for their mistake. It made our evening. We will definitely return.
Delightful meal before dinner. Waiter was attentive, food great, scallops, large lobster salad yum, burger a classic. If you are really hungry I suggest ordering of the menu as prefix are smaller portions.
Despite having been to the restaurant many times (2-3x/yr) i was there on an evening with poor weather. With my business associate arriving early for our reservation and with cancellations for the evening, the hostess seated my guest at a small table near the clearing station for dishes. I arrived and asked if we could sit somewhere else with many tables open. She moved us and when i asked why she would sit us there, she gave a non responsive answer instead of just apologizing. Otherwise, the meal was very good. Hamachi was excellent and the orecchiette with egg plant and mushroom bolognese was great. My guest had the hangar steak which was good but clearly not organic. (not advertised)
I love this restaurant, always delicious.
Delicious food, great service. Very enjoyable. The pre theater menu is expensive but the quality of the food makes it worth it.
We had a Great service and food! Very cozy place! Thanks to the servers for the special attention
Amazing date night! The bartender is fabulous. I highly recommend that you have a drink or two at the bar before dins and if you’re so inclined, allow him to surprise you with a special concoction.
Well. When you are paying that amount for food and are dressed up and get seated in the bar by the door it doesn’t make for a great meal. You need to seat people who are dressed in jeans, t shots and sweatshirts ( there were plenty of those). In those seats People who manage a restaurant need to understand their clientele.
I expected more from this restaurant. The food is fine but pricey. The hostess was a little rude. Tried the db burger, soup of the day, and chocolate pot de creme. It was fine, nothing special.
Everything was perfect except for a terrible coats/umbrella experience we had. Upon entering the restaurant we had our coats and one umbrella checked in and the attendant gave us one ticket. Upon leaving, after giving the ticket to the attendant she went to the coat room and after a while returned with my coat and the umbrella. When I asked her for my wife’s coat she asked me with an indignant voice: “and where is the other ticket?”. After I reminded her that she had given us only one ticket, she returned to the coat room and after a long while returned with a coat and an umbrella that did not belong to us. Finally, my wife went to the coat room with the attendant and retrieved her coat. Throughout this situation the attendant was clearly hostile and not aware of her incompetence. It should not had happened in a place like this, but we decided not to allow it to spoil our evening.
Great service and good quality food
Will most certainly be back.
Food was excellent. Prix fixe menu is an excellent value. Our server Charles was delightful and knowledgeable. Noise level perfect for catching up with friends.
Happen to dine here on a Sunday evening so not as crowded/busy as other times, but never a problem no matter! We were a pty of 2 and agreed that the food was excellent and the service at our table was outstanding ! We had drinks at the bar prior to dining and the person handling the bar definitely had a disagreeable attitude, however, we did not allow that to effect a beautiful evening!
5 Star Dishes: Butternut Squash Soup, Peekytoe Crab Crostini, Tarte Flambe, Scallops
4.5 Star Dishes: The Burger (bottom bun was too soggy to pick up and eat like sandwich)
Lobster Salad (liked the flavor combination but expected more of a wow factor)
Service: Charles (Chuck) was on his game and we both enjoyed conversing with him between courses. Our water and wine glasses never went less than half full and the service was a 10/10
Overall this was an outstanding experience. We will be back again.
I treated myself to a solo meal before a matinee on Open Table's suggestion based on my interest in French Bistro cooking and atmosphere. I was expecting overpriced, and was not disappointed. My Steak ($5 extra for the two-course prix fixe $30.oo) was, however, superb, as was a lovingly prepared very fresh salad as an appetizer. Service, however, was another matter; I wondered if I waited 25 minutes (or until I asked for FOOD) because I was a woman alone (and therefore a poor tipper?) or because they hoped I'd order more wine. Once I ASKED, food came immediately. BUT--there was also an egregious mistake on my check, which said I had ordered a different (and far more expensive) wine than I had. The mistake was cleared, but still ....
SO: an interesting experience, but I cannot recommend it as the atmosphere is Too Light and Too Loud. It may be 'moderne,' but a classic French Bistro experience it is Not.
The atmosphere for breakfast was pleasant enough, although the decor is probably better suited to an evening meal; in the light of day, it felt less like a contemporary bistro and more like a nice corporate dining room. The waitstaff was competent, the kitchen efficient, and we weren't rushed at all. Overall though, we were disappointed in the food, particularly given the price. My husband's French toast was excellent, but I've actually had better Eggs Benedict in diners. The hollandaise sauce was quite good, if a bit too tart, but the ham was so salty that it was virtually impossible to taste anything other than salt, even after removing most of the ham. Part of the egg white in the poached egg was undercooked (runny) as well. On the whole, we were hoping for a bit more.
Pre theater dinner. Food was outstanding. Felt very well taken care of.
The food is mediocre at best and not worth the price whatsoever. I'm the words of my little brother, this is not a comer-backer.
As always excellent. Look forward to DB Bistro every time we go into the city.
We had dinner pre-theatre, from the a la carte menu. The fish was outstanding. We shared Dover sole and rainbow trout, switched Hal way through the meal. Paired with a reasonable priced Sancerre. We stayed next door at the historic Algonquin Hotel. The restaurant dB Bistro moderne also offers breakfast, which was wonderful as well. Highly recommended.
Delightfully Courteous service. Tasty meal. Great presentation.
Pre theatre. Couldn't get to desert before I need to leave so service could have been better
We enjoyed an excellent pre-theatre dinner at DB recently. For the first course, we shared an innovative flat bread which was delicious. I had their infamous DB burger, which, at first, has so much "going on" that it took a few minutes to comprehend what they put together. Overall, it was excellent. My wife enjoyed the homemade pasta, Orecchiette. She enjoyed it immensely.
While it was a 60 minute dinner, we did not feel rushed at all. Our server, Oscar, did a nice job, too!
Great for pre-theatre
Classic over rated NYC restaurant. Overpriced, quality of food just average and service was indifferent. For example, we were a party of 3. The first 2 arrived and were seats. My wife arrived a few minutes later but was not told we had already arrived. She waited in the bar area. No one told her we had already been seated. No wifi, so texts did not work. When she was finally seats, we were ignored for 10 minutes. Then a single glass of wine took another 10 mins to arrive. The food was just okay. Nothing special but paid $100 per person which included two drinks, one dessert. Very noisy and crowd was old and uninspiring.
Too many great restaurants in NYC. This was nothing special. Our second trip here. With such great reviews we expected much better. Won't make that mistake again.
I've had many excellent meals here in the past, but on this night, things were not as strong as usual. Some of the dishes were a little lackluster in presentation. The main issue, however, was the service. It started out strong, but flagged near the end. We came here for a pre-theater dinner for my mother's birthday. We mentioned both items to our server. Appetizers came out promptly, but there was a long wait for the entrees and then a long wait to clear the plates. As a result, we were very rushed in trying to get to the show. Also, we had to remind our server about my mother's birthday (dessert/candle/etc.), even though I had mentioned it at the start of the meal before my mother arrived. It was not a bad experience, but much weaker than usual.
Wonderful meal as always very consistent. I was disappointed that there was no gluten free bread which they usually have on hand but in its stead the chef sent an appetizer of Shishito peppers which were delicious.
Nice restaurant- well located. Enjoyed the cog au vin & Kale Salad - ham/ gruyere/ mushroom crepe was good - not great. Excellent service and AMAZING Madelines for dessert. Didn't exactly live up to the buzz re: food- but an overall enjoyable experience.
We had a booth in that mid section which was great- quiet easier for our conversation and very comfortable.
Great for business breakfast
The food is exceptionally delicious! We both had the foie gras and filet mignon... Amazing! And the chocolat fondant for desert. The wine list is extensive with something for every budget. We had a delicious Côte du Rhone. The service was courteous and attentive. Everyone went above and beyond to accommodate my gluten intolerance and other allergies. The decor is modern, warm and welcoming. Definitely a great choice before or after the theater.
