About db Bistro moderne

Chef Daniel Boulud’s db bistro moderne is a contemporary French restaurant, known for chic bistro cuisine. The menu features updated bistro classics with a modern twist and market-driven French-American cuisine, alongside traditional French specialties and seasonal dishes showcasing the Greenmarket’s finest produce.

Located one block east of Times Square in New York City, db bistro is the perfect spot for pre- and post-theater dining, a Midtown business lunch or breakfast “à L’Express”.

It was here that Daniel Boulud launched the gourmet hamburger craze in 2001 that took the world by storm. The DB Burger, stuffed with red wine-braised short ribs and foie gras, continues to be a main attraction.

Our handsome bar area features a seasonal menu of dishes that can be enjoyed with exceptional wines and cocktails.

Delighted with the experience. This was my second time celebrating a family member's birthday. This week we celebrated with family from out of town. All was exquisite.

The butternut squash soup was great. After that everything was kind of disappointing. The salmon and Bagel was very light on the salmon. The Bagel was also very tough. The pickles on the steak Tartine were good. The meat was okay. About a 30-minute wait from the time we got our soup until we got our entrees. We were given a faint apology and that was all. They were obviously very aware it took too long for us to get our food. Don't know if I would hurry back to this place anytime soon.

Conveniently located between Grand Central and Times Square. Staff was welcoming and helped us settle in while we waited for our last diner who was delayed a few minutes. Sommelier helped us narrow our pick and find an enjoyable wine to accompany the meal. My daughter does not eat cheese, and the wait staff helped find choices amongst the dining options to accommodate her tastes. Would return again.

Great pre-theater dinner, with the team asking what time is curtain. We were able to get in and out with time to spare. We order one pre-fixe meal and one set of house specials. The house special escargot with chicken oysters were a unique and delicious surprise. We could not stop talking about that for days.

Loved this place enough to come back for breakfast! The steak tartare starter is very good and the roasted veal chop special was wonderful.

It was a little noisy partially due to a very loud woman - not the restaurant’s fault. The service was very good.

And at breakfast, they make a fine omelette.

A marked decline over 12 months. Menu items formal and not "bistro" at all. Bass was a VERY small portion and while well cooked, the flavor and "wow" factor present in the past is long gone. Bistro burger still top notch. Pates and mousse's gone. Menu is an out of date relic and is not contemporary bistro for either NY or France. Mr. Boulud needs to get back in the kitchen and shape things up. Sad business dining experience.

Went to Bistro Modern before a Broadway Show because of the convenient location. That's about all to recommend about our experience with this restaurant. It was overpriced, noisy and very average food.
Would not go back and would not recommend to a friend.

This was my second visit, but 15 years later. It still remains a classic with a modern atmosphere, and a spare ever-evolving menu, still with the DB burger (had it the first time, swoon-worthy, but rich) The Prix fixe is a good idea and my choices were excellent! great for theater district!

My wife’s chicken salad was salty, dry and mediocre. Their signature burger was interesting but $32 should get you a quality steak, not a hamburger. Club sodas were $4.50 each without refills. This meal (no alcohol, appetizers, or dessert) was $78 before tip - a definite no as a lunch before theater .

The only reason to go to DB Bistro is if you are around and don’t want/ can’t go anywhere else... the famous (and pricy) burger has no special taste. NY has so manu good options that I would not recommend to waste your time (and money!) there.

We were in NYC for an event and chose db Bistro moderne because it was close and we are regular customers of DBGB in Washington DC. It was a rainy dreary day, so we decided to have a leisurely lunch/brunch before our trip back to DC. Everything about our lunch was spectacular. We will be sure to make a special point of returning the next time we are in NYC.

I was seated right away even though my guest was not there. They graciously changed my table to the more quiet back room. I was given the menus by the waiter and the sommellier introduced himself. I chose a lovely bottle of Chablis which was delivered to my table immediately. My guest arrived and the waiter introduced herself and told us the specials. She recommended the Coq au Vin which my guest decided on and loved. I had the filet mignon which was like butter. The portions were small, but enough for us. We both had dessert (ice cream) and coffee - both delicious. We were not rushed at all even after we paid the bill and now had a bit of quiet time to discuss business. The price was remarkably modest considering the bottle of wine. I look forward to going again.

Outstanding service, lovely pre-theatre dinner spot. The lobster salad was very spare with dressing and could have benefitted from a bit of lemon and pepper. The Steak Frites had nice flavor but frites needed salt. Dessert was divine as were the tastes at the end.

I have tried other db restaurants and they have been fabulous but this time we wanted something a bit more casual and not as pricey. The Bistro was perfect. The staff is not quite up for Daniel's in knowledge but they were friendly and helpful. One dish (there were 3 adults for dinner) was advertised a an onion bacon tart but it was more like the thinnest pizza ever and a dis appointment. the rest of dishes were very good and desserts were spectacular. I will definitely go back and some other dishes.

Waiter service was very poor, we had to wait long times for her to come ask for our order, to follow up if we wanted more drinks,; not available when we wanted the check, unavailable to pick up check-we had to get up and get her the check with credit cards for them to process. On tbe other hand, the busboys were very attentive and nice.

We had theater tickets and wanted to return to dB bistro after many years. We remembered loving it. Unfortunately, our experience this time was poor, mostly due to the service. The bread was cold and soggy. When we kindly asked for a replacement, the waiter scoffed and acted like we were crazy. He brought a warmed version of the same soggy bread and was annoyed that we didn’t like it. Then he seemed to chat with the manager and other staff members and mock us. Uncomfortable to say the least. The manager came over to talk to us about the bread, but seemed more interested in telling us how fresh it was rather than make sure we were happy or enjoying. To the credit of the chef, our entrees were delicious - coq au vin and sea bass. It’s a shame the overall experience for us was ruined. We won’t be going back and would not recommend it.
