About db Bistro moderne

Chef Daniel Boulud’s db bistro moderne is a contemporary French restaurant, known for chic bistro cuisine. The menu features updated bistro classics with a modern twist and market-driven French-American cuisine, alongside traditional French specialties and seasonal dishes showcasing the Greenmarket’s finest produce.

Located one block east of Times Square in New York City, db bistro is the perfect spot for pre- and post-theater dining, a Midtown business lunch or breakfast “à L’Express”.

It was here that Daniel Boulud launched the gourmet hamburger craze in 2001 that took the world by storm. The DB Burger, stuffed with red wine-braised short ribs and foie gras, continues to be a main attraction.

Our handsome bar area features a seasonal menu of dishes that can be enjoyed with exceptional wines and cocktails.

We've eaten at DB Bistro Moderne several times, always with pleasure. We prefer to sit in the bar, where the service is more informal and it seems quieter. We had a light meal of the Olivier Mueller escargots and a side of spicy carrots (all delicious!) and a lovely pear coupe glace for dessert. And wine, of course. It was absolutely perfect. Can we have the spicy carrot recipe, pretty please?

We had a lovely pre-theater brunch. This restaurant is always refined, sophisticated, professional and, delicious. Best pre- theater I could imagine.

We ate here before a Sunday matinee. We found the staff, well trained yet friendly. The ambience was lovely and enabled a quiet conversation.

Highly recommend the crostini with caviar. It is two large portions so we split as an appetizer. We each had the small portion lobster salad which we enjoyed very much. The lobster was fresh and succulent.

Perfect location for pre or post theater dining. Close enough to walk quickly to theater but far enough away from the maddening crowds of Times Square

Service excellent. Table for 2 tiny.

Value terrible. Spent $127 incl tx and gratuity with $20 coupon. Ordered lowest priced wine bottle ($46) which happened to be excellent (blend Grenache and Shiraz). Ordered appetizer and $35 burger.

Clearly a $200-$250 dinner. Not for me.

We loved this restaurant. Food was delicious and they made a huge effort on the dessert: a plate with tiny madeleines, happy anniversary on one side, happy birthday on the other with a candle. Just perfect pre-theater.

db Bistro moderne had splendid food and swift, attentive service. They are near the Theater District and offer prix fixe for those whom this suits. The wine by the glass is a touch steep (but well-chosen) and the tables a touch cramped. Overall, a great dining experience.

We were late coming from a show. The hostess and staff made us feel welcomed even though it was close to closing time. The food and service were excellent and in no way rushed. Truly professional!

When we come to NY to catch a few shows we have a special meal at db Bistro Moderne. Tonight we had yet another spectacular meal. Attentive service and a special shout out to the sommelier who is friendly and helpful. For what me is a special occasion I can splurge with confidence. See you next time for sure.

DB Moderne was good, not great. Everyone in our party was excited to try the burger with truffle...who wouldn't be? Turns out it tastes just like a regular burger. The Lolla Rossa salad was excellent. Organic chicken was good. The $55 tasting meal is a good value and location is excellent for after theater meal.

We had a great post theatre dining experience at DB Bistro Moderne. The restaurant has a cool understated vibe and the service was professional but personable. Really enjoyed the menu offering which was perfect for a late casual meal. My husband ordered the signature short rib stuffed burger and I had the coq au vin. This was enjoyed with a delightful bottle of St. Emilion. (Nice wine selection as well). Delicious experience overall.

I used it at year end of 2017. I stayed at Sofitel New York next door so I went to cold night soon. All the dishes were very tasty with authentic taste. It is recommended.

Iconic burgers and flat bread were great. Service was attentive, friendly, and professional. It was a pre-matinee lunch & time was an issue. The place was noisy & crowded for the holiday weekend. No problem. Other than it being very lively we had a perfect lunch & thenpeople watching was also fun.

What a wonderful casual French restaurant! Classics like coq au vin and steak tartare while still having room on the menu for a burger. Sommelier Josh was fantastically helpful with the wine selection. Would definitely go back and recommend to others.

Food was good; not great, a bit too rich for my taste. The wait staff knew I had theatre tickets, but the service was not on par with my expectations. Due to the wait staff's inefficiencies I had to high tail it to the theatre. The meal took almost 2 hours; all I ordered was a beet salad and the "signature" Uber rich signature burger. IMHO, Michael Mina can run circles around Daniel Bolud. Do yourself a favor, if you are going to spend $35 on a burger, choose another restaurant.

The service was excellent. The chestnut soup was a delight --with a velvety texture contrasted by crisp fried leeks, black trumpet mushrooms and thin slices of chestnut and flavored with sherry vinegar. We pared it with a crisp pinot grigio offered by the small or large glass. The fois gras was delicious and balanced by an apple celeriac? puree and crisp batons of apple, served with brioche toast. Our waitress suggested a German wine that perfectly cut through the richness of the liver. Wonderful. I would return just for that one dish.

My partner chose the prixe fixe lunch menu and had a salad (hohum vinaigrette) and the arctic char which was seared and served rare. It smelled slightly fishy. She sent it back to be cooked through and liked it. I tried the famous db burger for $35, It was perfectly cooked and the quality of the beef was delicious, but the short ribs it was stuffed with don't hold a candle to mine. Chef Bolud could add a little procini broth when cooking them and a little sweetness with tomato or balsamic. And it needs to be less ball shaped, flatter.

I went for the recommendations, and I like French food. I liked the ambiance but the food was disappointing. For a restaurant with such a good reputation I wondered what all the hype was about. The infamous signature dish, burger, was very disappointing. The ambiance and service was fine, but no intention to recommend it or return.

Food was delicious and prices are fair toward high. Drinks, alcoholic beverages and coffee/tea, are way overpriced. Service was reeeally slooow. We went for pre-theater dinner (5 pm dinner for 7 pm show), and we arrived 5 minutes before our reserved time. Despite stating it on our reservation and reminding our server about it, we had to run to catch the start of the show (Hamilton for that matter.) The server literally put the desserts and the check on our table at the same time! This was not an enjoyable dining experience.

Went here for a special Prix Fixe Christmas Eve dinner and it did not disappoint. A good range of choices on the menu, great service, and the food was spectacular. Probably the best halibut I've ever had. Small but inventive cocktail list, a great selection of wines by the glass and an outstanding bourbon collection. My only slight negative was that I didn't really get to linger over the meal as much as I would have liked, but understand its a busy restaurant and a special evening, so that was relatively minor.

We had a wonderful prix fix meal for Christmas Eve. The foie gras was not a grilled slice but rather a pate which was not explained from the menu. Otherwise we enjoyed everything else. We will definitely be back.

We were in NYC for three days, and had good food at several locations. This was by far the best. Taste, unique dishes, ambiance, great wait staff, good drinks, and fantastic dessert. Truly, a chef-driven dining experience. A little more pricey, but worth the money. Both my wife's and my dish (steak tips for her; pork chop for me) were fantastic, and the accompanying vegetables, etc. were also expertly done. Make a reservation: the place was packed the entire time we were there, and for good reason! Highly recommended.
