About db Bistro moderne

Chef Daniel Boulud’s db bistro moderne is a contemporary French restaurant, known for chic bistro cuisine. The menu features updated bistro classics with a modern twist and market-driven French-American cuisine, alongside traditional French specialties and seasonal dishes showcasing the Greenmarket’s finest produce.

Located one block east of Times Square in New York City, db bistro is the perfect spot for pre- and post-theater dining, a Midtown business lunch or breakfast “à L’Express”.

It was here that Daniel Boulud launched the gourmet hamburger craze in 2001 that took the world by storm. The DB Burger, stuffed with red wine-braised short ribs and foie gras, continues to be a main attraction.

Our handsome bar area features a seasonal menu of dishes that can be enjoyed with exceptional wines and cocktails.

This was our second visit to dB Bistro moderne in a period of 2 months. On our first visit, we enjoyed everything. We ordered the Escargot and Pate for our appetizers, a fish special and the Filet Mignon for our main course. We felt it was quite pricey but OK for a special occasion, our Anniversary. But on our second visit, for a Birthday, we were very disappointed. The Escargot appetizer, which we ordered on our first visit and loved was awful this time. It was flavorless and with a $20 pricetag. For a main, we ordered the Pork Chop, which with a $40 pricetag was just average and the Orchietta mushroom bolognese, which with a $32 pricetag was flavorless. We had to ask for and wait for salt, pepper and parm cheese. For the happy hour drinks we had a specialty drink, reasonable at $9, and a House vodka martini which was overpriced at $17. The restaurant was crowded, but we had a reservation. The service was awful. The servers were running all over the place and seemed very disorganized. We frequent nice restaurants in both NJ and NY so we know much about good food and service. We will not be back.

Having dined several times at dbBistro Moderne and pleased, I was so disappointed on this most recent occasion. The white wine was served warm, but the waiter gladly offered to have it chilled when I asked. Unfortunately, he forgot to return it to the table until I reminded him mid- way through lunch. The seafood spagettini, which is usually very good, was lukewarm and the pasta congealed. My guest's chicken entree was tasteless and unappealing. I'll chalk it up to the pre-holiday rush! On the plus side, we had a comfortable banquet table, and the cappuccino was very tasty.

Food was mediocre at best. Service was ok but not exactly friendly. They did give us a complimentary appetizer, which was a nice gesture. Overall, I wouldn’t return for dinner.

Finding db Bistro Moderne was a gem in a crowded and often banal theater district scene. First and foremost, the food was exquisite. I had a beet salad and mushroom crostini, and it made for a healthy, gourmet brunch that was light yet satisfying. The festive ambiance was warm and inviting, the waitstaff was attentive, and the menu was small but inventive, with something for everyone (which is highly unusual for a French restaurant). Definitely worth the walk eastward away from the Times Square scene, yet still close enough to have plenty of time to walk to or from the theater.

We were disappointed DB Bistro was out of their signature burger, it was one of the reasons we chose the restaurant. The food we had was very good. The service was a bit slow but that might be because of the holiday season.

The wait staff is very attentive to any of our request especially with the children's food allergies. The burger is a favorite as well as the freshly baked petit Madelines, delicious!

We LOVE this restaurant and eat here every time we come to the city (which is often). It is our go to place for fine dining. The food is consistently delicious, thoughtfully prepared and satisfying. The service matches the cuisine which is a rare thing these days no matter what level dining you're experiencing. We ate dinner and breakfast at db both days we were in the city. Highly, highly recommend it.

We have been here many times for friend and family events and pre-theater. This time it was pre-theater with friends. We sat down at 5:30 for a 7PM curtain two blocks away. We ordered right away confirming that we had a show at &. We had eaten our appetizers which were cleared by 6:10. Our main courses did not come. We asked our server at about 6:25 if our meal was coming. She said it would be there soon. Time passed. 6:30, 6:35, 6:40 and by 6:45 when the entrees had not arrived we got up, got our coats and said we had to leave for our play. At that point the entrees were just arriving but we did not have time to stay. Leaving at 6:45 was what we had always planned. This was dinner with a client (we had been there once before with them before a play) and we had chosen DB Bistro because we had had such great experiences there before. We love the food. But this was extremely embarrassing. Although three of us did get to eat our appetizers, the wife in the couple had not ordered an appetizer. So when we had to leave to get to the play she had not had anything for dinner. Fortunately the play was over by 8;30 and we all went out again another restaurant to get her (and the rest of us) some food. That of course was also annoying because at that point we all would have preferred to get home. They live in Bronxville so had a commute and didn't end up leaving until 10. So all in all an awkward, embarrassing evening with two tries at having dinner.

Cocktails were creative and good, Sommelier was very helpful. The Original DB burger was ok, on the dry side even with the foie gras and had more short rib meat than I expected. And the fries were marginal at best. The waiter was not very attentive and it was very loud. After a build up from Family and friends I was disappointed with dinner.

I have wanted to try the DB Burger since the restaurant first opened, and critics were taken aback by the $18 price tag. I finally got to do that this week, but the burger was now $35. The short rib part was so so, the frois gras part was fabulous, and the burger was very good but not outstanding. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience dining there. The service was impeccable, and I liked the atmosphere a lot.

I’ve always loved this restaurant but they’ve changed it. The price fix menu used to only be for pre theatre so adding it changes a lot of the dynamic. The service used to be very sharp and crisp; now it’s ordinary and slow. Portion sizes have grown which may please some but it’s not pleasing to the eye and detracts from the overall vibe of the restaurant. If I wanted heavy platings I’d go to a mass chain restaurant. So sad you’ve ruined such a once very popular local spot.

Two words.....ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING!!

It has to be said that I got much better value for my $ at DB Moderne than anywhere else we ate in 2 weeks. So many checks were more expensive and not really worth the charge. When this happens I tend to tip around 15% or I exclude the alcohol cost entirely and only tip on the food. Not here though....it was worth every penny!
If you are unsure what to choose as an appetizer, do yourself a favour and go for the mushroom crostini- it is like having a concerto in your mouth.
I will be back every visit to Manhattan which is not something I choose to do too often because new top rated restaurants open every year.
Thank you to whoever designed the dishes we chose, the wait staff and the charming sommelier!

Chic atmosphere, deliciuos and creative food, and the wait staff was really very attentive.
Bathroom situation needs more oversight... two unisex bathrooms were lovely, but out a door and actually in hallway of the hotel next door, so maybe hard to manage(?)One door had issues with the lock, and the other was out of toilet paper, so caused line of several people... both before and after our brunch. Not a big deal, but took away from the dining experience.

Daniel Boulud should be embarrassed to have his name on this restaurant—maybe that's why he used his initials. I booked this reservation for a special occasion, thinking it would be on par with Daniel's other excellent restaurants (Boulud Sud, Bar Boulud, DBGB), which are frequently in my NY and DC rotation. I was wrong.

The food was...fine. Not special, not up to the standards I'd expected. We started with the Alsatian tart. The server recommended a large for two of us, which was clearly excessive. The tart was fine, but we instantly knew we'd been upsold. It was way too big for two people who were ordering first and second courses.

About those courses. We each enjoyed our soup. I had the mushroom veloutee, which could have benefitted from some additional sherry or cognac and a bit of salt, but which was generally quite good. My date enjoyed the special, a butternut squash soup. My coq au vin, a standout at Bar Boulud lacked the sauce and rich flavor one would expect from the dish. Her "filet mignon" was really a couple slices of tenderloin, arranged with the sides. It was closer to medium than the medium rare she had ordered. The brussels sprouts were over cooked and, were it not for the sparse bacon, largely flavorless.

Our servers were eager to clear our table, often when we were still clearly eating our meals. During our entree, we were asked twice if it was time to clear our plates before we finished. Once those plates were cleared...we waited 40 minutes for dessert and another 20 for the check. We left more than an hour after we finished our entrees, at which point, neither of us felt like dropping by the events we had planned later in the evening.

This is a restaurant for people who want to say they ate at a Boulud restaurant while they were in NY. It's not a place to go expecting the experience one would assume from a multi-Michelin starred, James Beard-winning chef in the culinary Hall of Fame.

I had lobster salad, which turned out to be large chunks of very good lobster, with green salad on the side. If I had known this was what it would be, I would not have ordered a salad to start. Server should have noticed what I was ordering & commented on the duplication. Meals were good but selection was very limited if one didn't want a full meat or fish meal for lunch. My sister-in-law had pasta which she liked very much. The meals were terribly overpriced, even for NYC - $50 for the pasta & soup alone. I had thought that we would enjoy gourmet food but it was not; fresh & tasty but no special chef's touches. Because of the pricing I wouldn't recommend it.
