We go to untried restaurants with neighbors every few weeks and read good reviews about Darsalam. We loved it as soon as we walked into the cozy spot full of momentos and photographs (!) of Iraq. My only quibble is the price, which was surprisingly high, but then I realized that we'd had a bottle of wine plus enough food for us to each take home practically another meal. We will go again for certain, but order less food. The kabobs were exceptional, as was the beet salad, but one was plenty to split 4 ways, and we ordered 2. Lovely staff, cozy spot and great food!

The food has always been excellent with fresh ingredients and great spices. One improvement that could be made is to serve individual portions of pita bread. They give you a big one for the table and everybody has to tear a piece with their hands.

Great restaurant and atmosphere. We loved how Darsalam was decorated, the spices used in the food and drinks, how quiet it is, and that the vegetarian and vegan options were marked. We really enjoyed the black ceylon tea and lentil soup and would highly recommend this place to friends.

Delicately flavored lentil soup. Unlike mine, it's somehow creamy, but without cream, I think). I had eggplant stew on top of the lovely rice - spiced with zatar. My husband had chicken skewers from the HH menu and raved. The beer was fantastic. Fragrant and spicy. We also had the wheat noodle dessert. Very tasty, but I was too full. Took half my stew home and had a second meal!

We really enjoyed the food, but the service was strange. First it took about half and hour for them to take the order. And they only took the order after we requested. Then they brought salads for two people, but not the third. After some time we had to ask for the third salad. After bringing out the salad they started bringing out the entrees one at a time over a prolonged period of time. Then after they finished bringing out the entrees we asked where the appetizer was. There had been a miscommunication between the server and the kitchen, so the appetizer was not prepared. Instead of comping the appetizer they brought it to us and charged us. The food was really good, but the service was very odd.

I love the vibe of this restaurant. The food is amazing--donut shaped falafels plus cucumber dill yogurt salad equals pure heaven. The baba is perfect, humus fresh and unique. Plus, the cocktails are creative and fun! It actually feels like the food is made with love. Winter or summer, this restaurant is such a treat.

Food was just average at best. The falafel was burnt to a crisp, difficult to eat, extremely dry. The beet salad and lamb stew were average.

This is a little gem in North Portland, easily missed among the bigger names farther west on Alberta. Excellent, authentic Iraqi food, gluten-free (without flatbread) and plenty of veggie/vegan options, served in ample portions and about as laid back as can be. If you're a carnivore, choose between chicken, lamb, or beef in various forms and with various spices, same concept for vegetarian. Start with either soup and savor everything. Use the fresh flatbread for dipping in everything, and go for the Lebanese red or white wine (there's also NW wine and, of course, beer). Baklava leads the dessert options, if you have room: wide range of flavors even on the dessert menu.

Husband's lamb kebab was dry and chewy. My lamb shank was bland. Appetizers were good. Main entrees, not so much. Specifically went on a Wednesday night for the music, which was just okay. Service was slow even though they weren't busy. All-in-all disappointed.
