Dark Star Saloon & Cafe
We went the day after Valentines Fay and it was perfect! The food was cooked to perfection and the atmosphere was wonderful .
We attended the Valentine's Day dinner... they food was spectacular! As expected they were very busy. This allowed plenty of time to talk and enjoy the live music. The staff was friendly and attentive... albeit stressed due to the large turn out. The owner/chief even came out to help and speak with guests. This is a great place!
Don't waste your time or money. Bad service. Bad food.Unorganized. Overpriced.
The problem here was on Valentines Day: This is where the problem occurred we called in advance and questioned the individual that has answered. Of course we had called other establishments nearby with a similar ambiance and menu. We have frequented this establishment before but not over Valentines day. My wife asked what were the specials & pricing of certain dishes being served that evening but no fixed prices were discussed she reserved the table of 6. So our Father on a fixed income and sister-in law and husband showed as well 6 total. Once seated we looked at the menu to find that each person Valentines meal was going to be fixed. 75.00 bucks ridiculous never going back we were flummoxed and fleeced. We could have left yes but at 6:00 pm and leave to only look for other menus???
Cool, hip place with great coffee, service and food. We had breakfast and everything was fantastic! From the orange cornbread waffle to the sidewalk slam breakfast. Be sure to get a bloody mary, made to your desired level of heat, with a spicy rimmer and a plump, well-seasoned shrimp! Homemade hotsauce and jam too! Will be back for dinner, creme bruelle and parties on the patio this summer.
Fantastic burgers and atmosphere
Great experience to enjoy with my loved one ❤️💙💜
Our reservation was confirmed twice yet the restuarant was closed when we arrived. There was no notice or attempt to contact us. The owner was unapologetic and made a thin attempt to save face by offering a free dessert "next time we come in." We looked forward to trying Dark Star for the first time as we had heard the food is great and atmosphere appealing. There will be no "next time" as we will not waste another opportunity for a date night away from our young kids at Dark Star, which is a shame because we are a short walk away. First impressions are everything and this one was a dud.
They were clearly unprepared for restaurant week, as several items were no longer available, but the service was great, and the food we had was absolutely fantastic. We went for dinner, for which I'll go back, but I am really excited to go back for breakfast and try those waffles!
We had a great dinner experience at Dark Star. Food looked and tasted great. Kris and Kindle are wonderful hosts. Ambiance is classic rock & roll nicely presented. We will back to try their brunch menu.
Great ambiance ! Food is delicious as well as presentation of food. Servers are attentive and friendly. I’ll be back — will more friends and more if my family !!
We had a wonderful meal that was part of the Fredericksburg Restaurant Week. We probably would not have considered it otherwise, but now we have recommended it to our friends and plan to return.
Our server was pleasant, informative, and very patient with our many questions. The menu is not extensive, but the offerings, while unusual, were attractive and we hope to enjoy them soon. I am particularly fond of mushrooms and the owner explained that he uses a variety (far beyond the usual). I will definitely try those selections. There is a Sunday brunch menu that also looks very delicious.
The food and service were fabulous! The plating was remarkable and the food was cooked to perfection. The waitress was attentive and my glass was never empty. Dark Star is a gem in the heart of downtown Fredericksburg 🤗💗
I was there during Restaurant Week and the waffles were delicious. My favorite thing though was their amazing coffee - among the best I’ve ever had. I normally drink a cup a day but drank 3 1/2 cups at Dark Star. Fortunately they sell it!
Unfortunately the meal for the first restaurant night was not as good as the previous meals that we have had there. I ordered fillet mignon and my friends husband also ordered the filet mignon and it was not filet mignon as stated on the menu. I think basically they were just overwhelmed with the number of people that were there. We will be back again but restaurant week first night was not too good.
This place is a wonderful discovery! It's slightly off the main street, but it is so worth finding them. The external appearance is beautiful and a good precursor to the excellent upbeat interior. The owners did a great job plastering the walls... and ceiling with 60's and 70's musical posters, album covers, and other memorabilia. We had a picture of Marilyn Monroe on our table. The music playing gentle in the background fits the decor. The staff are absolutely wonderful, friendly, and helpful. They worked hard to make sure our party was taken care of and enjoying the experience. They interacted with all 6 of us and made us all feel welcome.
All this stated, the best was yet to come... the food! We attended brunch, and our party ordered both breakfast and dinner fair... one even had an egg on his hamburger! I ordered the filet and eggs... which was the most tender, delicious filet mignon laid in a scrumptious raspberry sauce. It was accompanied with a very cheesy grits. potatoes, and toast. The folks that ordered hamburger were awed in the delivery presentation of their meals... key toppings were skewered and standing tall on the top of the meat. Which is a cool delivery and allowed them to add and remove toppings as they wanted. We also ordered an appetizer of chicken waffle pops... an amazing take on chicken and waffles!! The taste and flavors were outstanding across our group... everyone raved about their meals and much was taken home as the portions are large!
This is a cute unique restaurant. The music matches the ambiance. Atmosphere is festive and uplifting, the theme is carried out throughout with seating and place settings.Table setting is vintage with smurf and ET glasses.
The berry mimosa was light, fresh and delicious. They were out of shrimp so no shrimp and grits. The chicken pesto quesadilla was missing items on the plate. No sides on the plate. Waitress said they were out of items.
Yet it was fresh tasting and distinctly flavored.
Chicken and waffle. The Belgian waffle was stuffed with seasoned chicken with a raspberry drizzle.along with a seeker of chicken. What a wonderful twist to what can be a tired dish. But again no sides.
BLT was the winner at the table. With fresh garden lettuce, tomato, artisan bread lightly toasted and big fried yummy home style bacon and hand cut fries that were perfectly fried and not greasy, these came with Siri hi and ketchup dipping sauces.
Waitress forgot to refill water even after asked
Attentive waitstaff, who were excited about the restaurant offered background. They opened in Oct.
hope they improve.
Amazing place...it has kind of a rock and roll meets vintage shop kind of vibe. Everyone was super friendly, the menu was interesting and the food was really good. Would like to try dinner sometime.
I made a reservation at Dark Star with OpenTable for my friends and I to give Dark Star a try. We were very much looking forward to our visit as we were coming from out of town. We made sure we had a reservation because there was a Christmas Parade in downtown that evening and most restaurants were full. When we arrived for our reservation the restaurant was closed for a private party. The restaurant made no attempt to contact us to let us know. When we asked what happened the owner said "well don't have a stink attitude" among other rude comments. This left a bad taste in our mouth and we will not be back.
Great first impression. Really good food, good service. We’ll be back.
We really enjoyed our meals and loved the oldies music. Will definitely be going back.
I wanted to give 5 stars so badly because the staff is very sweet and the ambience is cool with great music and an intimate atmosphere... however we were the first guests for dinner at 5:30 when they opened and 3 of the menu items weren’t available. Not a huge deal since we were told up front and they cook everything fresh. So 3 of us order a dish with shrimp. The waitress came back to say there was only enough shrimp for 2 entrees. Then came back a 3rd time to say only enough for 1 entree. So 2 of us had to change our order. A friend ordered filet mignon instead and ordered it medium rare and it was well done. They were very accommodating in bringing her a new one that she said was really good. I think there are just some food inventory issues with knowing how much to keep on hand. Since the menu is already so limited it is off putting when what they have runs out so fast. I hope they can figure it out for future guests. I still love the place and the chef and waitress were both really nice and apologetic. The waffle pops and the pomegranate sour beer they had were really tasty! I recommend and will return, but hope the restaurant will read this to work through some of those kinks and steadily improve- the food itself is delicious and beautifully presented.
Great food and drink choices with a farm to table ethos. Funky post hippie vibe and welcoming staff
The food from a limited menu came out looking like an amazing work of art and tasted just as good. Delicious.
The decor is so fun and unique to look at. The record album covers brought back memories and I had hoped to hear some of the songs from them instead of only Frank Sinitra. On repeat. Over. And. Over. And. Over.
Will try again, but in cooler weather when the flies won't join us.
Great ambiance, wonderful service, and delicious food with beautiful presentation.
Great food in a unique setting. Great staff!
We went during restaurant week. Food was excellent! Timing was slow. I think there was only 1 person cooking. They get their liquor license in a couple weeks. We will definitely go back.
