With the exception of the Rocky Balboa and mentaiko pasta, everything I tried, was fine. These two were flavorful and inventive. There was nothing wrong with any of my dishes, but I do not need to pay for them again. I tried the pickles, brussel & pork belly, beef donburi, chicken meatball skewer, eggplant onigiri, peach sake jelly, mentaiko pasta, and Rocky Balboa

Really attentive staff, our special request was honored and we were wished a happy anniversary. Food was absolutely delicious. We went to this restaurant for the special DC restaurant week menu however after dining, we found ourselves making plans for the next time we would visit. Cant wait to go again!

This was restaurant week but at $45 per person (not including the 3 percent add on they are asking for ingredient costs) you’d think they’d find more protein than 2 oysters and some bacon bits. We had both options of the pris fixe (the only option for dining) and the courses were sweet potato, eggplant, potato carrot soup, veggie fritter, udon, rice, ketchup spaghetti, oysters (2) and desserts were both red bean. Almost all starch. Flavors were good but definitely felt like somebody trying to get rid of cheap ingredients. Server was great. They took off the 3% up charge.

Lovely experience! I enjoyed all of the dishes. I just wish that you would have offered a Japanese green tea as an option. Also, for the chilled Zenzai dish, please put more than one mochi ball in the dish as they are so delicious!

I went during restaurant week! The menu was comforting. I really had to change my mindset once the first couple of course came out. The flavors were not as loud and innovative as the regular menu. This menu was very light with flavor highlights. It was a glimpse into comfort foods of Japan that would not normally hit the dining scene. Each course was carefully crafted and was cooked to perfection. Restaurant week helps with dealing with the large volume of crowds with the menu being very small and focused. It was nice how quickly everything was rushing out with how many people were out there.

Food was good! Restaurant week menu had a theme which I enjoyed a lot, feel like I connected with the chef/menu design team. Some dishes were very nice! Some were more basic and ok. Great ambiance and service, would come back and try something new!

I have eaten there before and the food was good but the restaurant week menu was disappointing— baked sweet potatoes and spaghetti?? It was super loud and appeared to be only one waiter and maybe two food runners so the courses took a long time to come. Although the waitress did her best the numbers were not in her favor. It was cold and too loud. Hard to enjoy.

The experience was fantastic, very pleasant and one of the best happy hours I've gone to. The small plates were a perfect way of sharing food, with a special nod to the skewers and grilled avocado; frankly life-changing! Will be back.

This review is for the upstairs 2nd Fl restaurant. All I can say is that our experience was horrendous. We came here because the Miso Cod looked great. The only time that we could get a reservation on a Friday night in July was at 5:30. We called to see if we could change it to 6 and the receptionist said that they were fully booked. So we settled for the 5:30 reservation. As we arrived we walked up to the second floor, I held the banister walking up and it was sticky and dirty. We entered and there was only one other table there so I can’t help but think that the receptionist was incorrect when she said they were fully booked. All the servers looked like they really didn’t give a damn about taking good care of us. They were all dressed very sloppy and our server had on a sweater which looked like a grandma’s housecoat. We ordered, she disappeared and looked at her phone. We needed some help and we asked the food runner for help and he basically responded with, “your server will be right back”…our server in the “housecoat” was busy on the phone so we asked another server for help and his response was, “S’up?”….ok, sorry to bother you man in super unflattering tight jeans could we get some help. Our Miso Salmon came which was basically a cold piece of a overcooked inedible fish. Hence, we decided, this entire experience is a flop and requested the check. NO ONE, bothered to say, hey, I noticed you didn’t eat anything, how can I help? The check came with 20% gratuity already added. Ah ha! That makes sense why the service is deplorable…it doesn’t matter how poor the service is because these sad saps are going to get their 20% no matter what! Unless the owner is actually getting a cut of the service and these people are just disgruntled employees?!?! I don’t know the answer to this but I do know that this place is horrible and not worth your time or money. Stay away.

Fun spot for a night out. A refreshing twist on Japanese comfort food. Service wasn't stellar and food arrived cold at times. Tables and ledges were dirty when our group was seated. Great atmosphere and potential but didn't live up to the hype.

This was our first experience with this type of food and we were warmly welcomed. The foods were explained, levels of heat - really only wasabi - but my dining partner doesn't tolerate garlic - accommodated. Plus we had no idea happy hour extended to the weekend nor that there was a happy hour at all so that was an additional welcome surprise. Food was delicious, it's hard to choose but we both liked the pork & Brussels sprouts skewer, I liked gyoze and fried oysters, she liked Abura Onigiri and chicken skewer. We both adored the cherry ice cream That was a treat! The walls and ceiling are covered in fabric, visually appealing and sound softening. The patron mix was good too showing that the food here appeals to new and repeat diners.

Everything was really good except for the extremely loud music (please remind the DJ that the space is small and music doesn’t need to be so loud for dinner service) and the food runner constantly bringing us the wrong food. I don’t know if the food runner was new on the job or what, but it was annoying. The food was very good. We especially liked the Rocky Balboa and the grilled salmon head; the head was over salted but delicious nonetheless.

Extremely poor service, mandatory service fee at 20%, which is definitely not worth that. The waiters all have a poker face, treating customers as if we all owned a debt to them. Food is just average, but the service is too bad.

We dined upstairs at Izakaya because it was close to the Shakespeare Theatre Company. We were very pleased with interesting as delicious small plates and cocktails and sake. we got a soup that had a tasty broth and strings but a too large hunk of fish.

A beautiful setting, too loud to be intimate, but tucked away enough to be cozy. The food is being delivered at random times so you might finish a plate and have 2 more dishes dropped off! The dishes are smaller and you could probably eat 4 on your own if you are hungry. Everything was delicious the bar staff were very knowledgeable and Jessie the waitress was amazing!
