Broken curling stones
Was really disappointed at the happy hour & poor service of our server & the curling host. No one seemed to know what happy hour specials were, a couple of us tried calling & it seemed to be a secret for some reason. Service was slow & other people were nice enough to drop food, drinks off. The host who walked us over to the curling area had an attitude and was not friendly. The server was nice but was very slow and we were done curling by the time she brought the other two drinks she forgot about. Curling itself as disappointing as they’re on wheels & not true curling on ice.
Fun experience overall. Had a good group that made it work! However was disappointed and concerned on lack of attention or taking care of the basic upkeep of the curling stones. A few of the stones were impossible to use as they would quickly turn off course as soon as they were rolled down the curling lane. Service was ok, but had to go inside the restaurant multiple times to find ask the server to come out to the area.
Curling was a fun time!!! It’s a beautiful space.
Curling was fun! Something we’ve never done before. It’s not “real” curling but makes for a fun date night. I highly encourage you check it out next time you’re in Chicago!
We had a great time. The curling rink itself was just ok, majority of the stones were bad and would just curve right each throw. It’s unbelievable to me that there are no heaters at the throwing spot for the curling either. How is that possible? I realize it’s December and it’s cold but the outside heaters did nothing and the fire pit gave off zero heat. Waitress was very slow. Was only able to order one drink before our hour was up. But still fun, great setting but things that can definitely be improved.
Who wouldn’t like some outdoor fun on a rooftop and lunch in a warming hut— great for all ages and abilities. Perfect shopping break when strolling the Mag Mile.
Curling part was awful, it’s not even real ice
It was fun, but not worth it. The curling was slanted, so the stones went to the same corner every time, no matter how fast/slow/where you threw them. The drink my boyfriend and I got was supposed to be a "hot toddy", but was really just a tea bag with a splash of liquor. Definitely not worth the $16 (luckily the drink it included in the price of curling). It was a fine evening, but there are much for worth it, fun things to do in Chicago.
Awesome time curling ! Beautiful winter
Morning with warm cidar!
The atmosphere at The Gwen upstairs was magical, the curling was not worth the money. Next time I would just get a drink on the roof top and skip the curling. Unfortunately the wheels that you use to curl were not working; not really fun if you can't get it to slide properly.
Such a fun, cute date idea! Beautiful rooftop, delicious drinks. Bar inside is great ambiance, as well!
We had so much fun and everyone at the Gwen who helped us was super nice and helpful.
Great ambiance. Friendly servers, however it took an hour from order until service, to get two rounds of drinks.
Place is nice, but the curling is a waste of time, money and patience. The rocks are on wheels and not kept in great shape. They're all like a shopping cart with one janky wheel and impossible to control spin or speed. If it were free, go for it.
The curling stones were terrible and wouldn't roll straight on their casters.
A group of us came to Upstairs at The Gwen to curl and brunch. We started with curling, which included a drink in the curling cost, but truthfully wasn't worth it. The rocks to toss were broken, which made the game a lot less interesting. We then went inside for brunch, where it took 25 minutes for a server to give us menus. Once we ordered it took 45 minutes for them to bring us our meals, all which were cold and one which was missing (later came out very hot and within 10 minutes). The plus side is that the group of friends were great company, they had TVs to watch football, and the management was very understanding of the difficulties we had while dining. We may never know what was happening in their kitchen or with their wait staff, but we hope it's an area in which they can improve.
We only did the one cocktail and curling at the Gwen. Just as the reviews say service was very slow but the waiter was very friendly. They double charged us and were very quick to fix the error. The curling is fun but not at all real the curling disks are on wheels and many are broken in they just kind of spin whichever way they want. We had a group of 6 ppl and got charged a large party fee which was the gratuity way more than we would of tip due to slow service. I’ll say it was enjoyable but I don’t need to do it again and it wasn’t worth the price. I rather go to royal plam in wicker or Kiser tiger in west loop for curling and shuffle board.
Terrible experience, not worth it at all. Poor drinks. Poor "curling"
We had cocktails and played curling. There were a total of 12 of us with 4 curling. It was snowing and we weren't sure we would be able to play, but they were so accommodating and cleared off the area. Great service and we had a great time.
We booked this for our family staycation in the city, and we had a blast! Highly recommend. Our server made sure we had drinks and even offered to bring blankets if anyone was too cold.
The curling doesn’t work. Pieces fly to the sides. Could be awesome.
Great atmosphere and drinks! Was misinformed about the curling and accommodations for large parties despite several phone calls prior, which was an inconvenience however we made the best of it. Management did not do much to accommodate. Loved the heat lamps, ability to sit outside and not freeze in the middle of Chicago winter! They had blankets, too!
I came with family who was visiting for a birthday. The atmosphere was awesome and we had fun curling. The only downfall was the service was terrible. Took forever to get any food or drinks. I would definitely recommend though.
Really terrible experience. Some of the important bits of information were buried in the description of this event. The curling wasn't even on ice, it was on a plastic floor, and it was right by the door so people kept walking through it.
When we arrived the staff seemed very confused about our reservation. I also wasn't aware that it was $25 a person. It says that in the description, but again, it's buried and only stated once. When we brought this up to the staff, the manager was so rude, and basically called us out for not knowing this. There was no effort to change our minds or improve our experience. I would never go back here, and I will make recos to friends to never go here as well.
The food and drinks were great. The service was lacking and slow. The curling is more of a gimmick than the real thing- the stones have wheels underneath. They also told us that we would get to hang out in the hut when we made the reservation, but when we got there said that that part wasn’t included. My recommendation is to go for the food and drinks only. Maybe sitting at the bar would garner better service?
Cool rooftop with below average service and one curling lane that has not been maintained. Half of the “stones” were broken and the actual lane is just a plastic sheet. Underwhelming experience.
NOT curling. No ice and the wheeled stones were terrible. Not worth $25 and the drinks were slow. Once they arrived they were quite tasty though!
The service was exceptionally slow. When at a bar like this with crafted cocktails you expect a longer wait time, but it took over 15 minuets for each drink ordered, including beers and wine. Though it was a Saturday it did not seem extra busy. The service staff also seemed rather large.
The Curling at the Gwen was great fun. The service was excellent. A great way to get in to the Christmas spirit. Be sure to take a picture with the pink Moose!!!
Service was outstanding. Super accommodating.
We just did the curling and a flatbread. Eating in the cabin was an escape to Colorado in the city. All the hot drinks were delicious and well crafted! We had a blast and went twice in one week with different friends. What a shopping break! Do it!
Curling was fun but hot chocolate was $16!!!
Was lured by curling but was met by curling stones on wheels. The "rink" and the stones had seen better days. That being said the food was excellent and the service was quite good. More of a gag than anything else.
Curling was so much fun! Nolan came out to help us learn the game and give us some pointers. Angel and Mimi were so welcoming and made some delicious drinks!
Lots of fun and great for a date night
It was fun! There were only a few people out enjoying the deck area, but the heaters kept us cozy and the service was very attentive.
The reservation made clearly states 5:45pm. I arrive and was told that there was another reservation at 6pm, so if we wanted to proceed that we would only be able to use the table for 15 minutes. When I asked why they would have reservations less than the time slotted for use, they had no answer. Disappointing.
