We had a bizarre experience at Cuginos. We went there after the other Italian restaurant we went to first had a 30 minute wait; we could walk right in here, which should have been a tip off. We sat inside and were the only diners inside; their patio was pretty well filled. Our table was missing some pieces of flatware so our waiter/the manager/the host/not sure who took items off of other set tables, which I thought was odd-clearly they weren’t expecting people to sit there. We were given menus but no drink menu. I asked for the drink menu; I didn’t receive it. I asked another person who stopped by our table (another server? It was hard to tell. No discernible uniform among the staff) about drinks and she said “we are out of a lot. All we have is red wine.” This is really strange considering this was a busy weekend in Steamboat. I decide to forgo wine. It takes us awhile for someone else to come over to take our food order. I see the bartender/chef (we saw him both behind the bar and in the open kitchen cooking ) pointing out that we need service to whatever servers catch his eye. We order and get our food in fairly quickly after ordering. Food was ok; nothing special. The chicken in my pasta dish was dry and over cooked. One of the servers (also who sat us down) comes over and says he will buy me a glass of wine and says he is the manager, which really confused us, because nothing about his demeanor suggested manager. I’m so turned off by the whole experience that I decline the wine. We pay, leave a tip that was probably too generous for the service we received and left. The best we can guess is that this place is closing soon and staff is now no-showing there and they are not reordering anything (like white wine) to restock.
The service was terrible--everyone we observed, from the hostess to the bartender to the wait staff was running around disorganized. We ate at Cugino's last year in the summer, and the service was fine, so maybe this is a temporary issue. After waiting 20 minutes for someone to come to our table after being seated, the waitress came to the table and instead of taking our order, said the restaurant was short staffed. I had to display discontent before she went ahead and took our order. We then waited 40 minutes for our food to arrive. We also watched two other tables walk out frustrated while waiting for someone to greet them at the table after being seated. The food itself was good, but we didn't order appetizer or dessert because we were concerned at how long it was going to take to get our food. We thought about walking out as well, but stuck it out. Hopefully, management gets this figured out, because the food is good.
Drinks brought after meal
out of 4 items on the menu
Chicken Marsala was horrible
We had a delicious charcuterie plate at the bar. That was the best part, downhill from there. Then we moved to the dining room where we discovered the restaurant was out of just about everything, including drinks. Get this, an Italian restaurant that is out of lasagna, on the kids menu even! Then it started to rain so we moved inside. One of the waitresses pointed us to a table then cleared that table of the place settings and said she would grab the aetttings from our outside table! What?! Why do that?
Our waitress was Tessa, she was great. When she brought our drinks, she told us they were on the house. That was a nice gesture. We felt bad for her because her management put her and the other staff members at an immediate disadvantage, one where they had to explain that they were out of just about everything on the menu.
We will not be eating there again. We overheard someone saying they “eat here every time they come to Steamboat” so it might have been good at one time, just not our night. First impressions are lasting impressions.
We eat at Cugino’s often. Great food, great value, comfortable restaurant and we love John the owner.
We waited 30 minutes at our table before we received our drinks or complimentary bread. Then we waited another 40min to get our food. The restaurant was only half full. Our waitress also got three of the orders wrong. I did not like the gluten free pasta at all. It tasked like rice noodles.
This restaurant is a block off of main street and has outdoor patio dining. I ordered the caprese ravioli and it was superb!! The best plate of ravioli I have ever had the pleasure of partaking! My husband had the lasange and it too, was very tasty. The portions were perfect and are accompanied by a house salad and bread as well. Will definitely return upon our next visit to Steamboat!
We had a very nice casual dinner on Cugino's patio Sunday evening and loved every minute of it. Our favorite thing about the evening was our waiter, Kody. A super waiter with a great personality, he made our night perfect. The arugula and prociutto pizza was fantastic. We are looking forward to coming to Cugino's every time we are in Steamboat!
Great as always. From the homemade pasta dish, to fresh and vibrant salads, to a delicious pizza for the table to share, Cugino's made it a great evening once again. John and his staff do a fine job.
We made a reservation early in the evening. The food was very good. The service was good. We ate outside to watch the people go by and had a good experience.
We elected to eat outside as the weather was spectacular. There were 3 of us & we ordered a large pizza to share & side salads. We all agreed the pizza was one of the best we had eaten. Our waitress, Rose, was a delight. I would recommend this restaurant for great food & affordable prices!
This place was an absolute nightmare! It was only 1/2 full and they ran out of menus. A party of 5 took over 2 hours. They weren't stocked with the simplest things, white wine, couldn't make the drinks on the cocktail list, didn't have certain foods on the menu. The waitress couldn't handle the pressure and apparently walked out. The food came out too slow, the salads prior to the meal came after the main course. We never got the starter bread. And to top it off, they left off an entree on the ticket, so a friend waiting an additional 15 min. while the rest had their food. Other tables were getting up and walking out bc they weren't getting any attention after being seating for 20 min. Would never recommend or come back. It was that painful.
I want this restaurant to be successful but they continue to struggle with the basics. We were seated with no menus-there seemed to be some confusion at the hostess stand. Not sure why there was confusion- the restaurant had about 8 guests inside and one large group of 12 outside. The place was basically empty.
After sitting for 5 minutes with no wait staff and no menus- we got up and went to another place. In the past the food has been some of the best in town- tasty, good portions and not too expensive. Unfortunately they continue to struggle with the wait staff.
It was a great restaurant! The food was delicious and the service was good.
Our service was awful and the server had no idea what she was talking about or doing, all of the food came out at completely different times, my $20 pasta was cold and left me feeling hungry, and my friends pizza was covered in greese and was soggy. I am very disappointed with my experience here.
Cugino's is an excellent Italian restaurant with a very good wine list. If you go there in the Summer expect a short staff but the longer wait is worth it for the dining experience. It is a little noisy but not offensively so. We sill be back.
It was off season, and it was our servers first day. In spite of a few hiccups, our meals were excellent and we were treated very well. The owner makes sure everything is just right.
cute place, but dimly lit and menus desperately need to be reprinted. nearly impossible to read! only 1 server for entire restaurant, she did best she could, but we had to ask for bread and waters. caeser salad dressing is house made, but was too tangy and we did not like it. fresh pasta dishes were excellent though! and it was odd that they sat us next to a messy table littered with kid stuff and file folders that no one sat at or even attempted to clear up. summary: order food to go!
Total disaster of an evening. The staff was unable to keep up with all their tables - we were seated 20 minutes after our reservation. It took about an hour to get our main orders ( no appetizers ). The food was forgettable and overpriced. I have made better pasta in any given Wednesday.
Would not recommend.
Not sure why people are so impressed.
Extremely Disappointing. They were out of a number of items. Be prepared to wait. Waited 45 minutes for our dinner salads. Waiter forgot to bring bread. Asked him twice and was told he would bring it out.....never happened. Waited another 30 minutes for our meals. Chicken Marsala was cooked with skin still on and was very salty. Eggplant Florentine was "bready". Worst meal and dining experience that I have ever had in Steamboat in past 10 years.
Dakota was a poor server. Food very avg. multiple menu items not available.
I met a friend who is new to town for lunch at Cuginos, where we had a cozy spot next to the fireplace on a snowy day. Joey, our waiter, was friendly and joking around with us as we made it clear we were settling in for a LONG lunch! My friend had the calzone (enormous and apparently delicious, as she didn't offer me a bite) while I had an excellent Americano Margherita pizza. Prices were very reasonable and the atmosphere was relaxed. I'm planning another lunch date there so I can try the calzones!
Great service & food. Prices were good for amount of food.
Great food, just a little small on the portions for the price.
Service: arrived 6:45, didn't eat until around 8pm. Asked server twice for water without ice; had to get it from the bar myself. House wine was plentiful. Family-style salad was a good idea, but it looked like they'd just dumped it out of a bag that had been sitting around all day - top greens were so wilted it was not edible - set a pile of limp greens on the table hoping someone would notice; hard to believe someone would serve it. Had clam linguine - I spat out one of the clams as it had turned. Woke up at midnight with very bad guts - the whole meal went through me in an hour. Very unpleasant. Will not go back.
Much better than I expected based on some prior reviews. Nice ambiance. Service wasn’t the greatest but they seemed short handed and our server did the best he could. Food overall was excellent. Good selection for kids. We had fried artichokes which were very good. I had chicken involtini and would recommend.
The complimentary tiramisu at the end of the meal is always a treat. The ambiance is normally very nice, but unfortunately at our last visit we were seated next to a party of 15, 8 of whom were boisterous young children left on their own at one end of the table. We felt like we were sitting in a school cafeteria. It was difficult to carry on a conversation. Not so great for a relaxing dinner, but good for families, I guess.
Went here after a day on the slopes in spring of 2018 was very disappointed overall. Made a reservation using open table app fearing it would be busy as many of the restaurants now are in steamboat. Arrived at the appropriate time. Upon arrival , host stated it would be a few minutes. It was at least a 15 minute wait past our reservation which wouldn’t have been an issue if once they finally got a table for the three of us, it was clearly barely a two person table and they just stuck a third chair right in the middle of the already cramped walking aisle thru this small restaurant. We asked for a table where we could
All fit without causing the third person to get up from their chair every time someone had to move in the restaurant and this was viewed with almost animosity by the staff. The manager came out and huffed and puffed at us, who were making a fair request at this point. They “created “ a four person table against a pole in the middle of the restaurant with barely enough room to breathe. I will never go back here.
Portion of lasagna was very small. Salads never showed up, until after meal. Chicken toscano was good. Place was understaffed, making service slow.
The food was delicious, but it was an off night for service. If you’re not in a hurry, great place to take kids.
The food was good. The service was very slow. Took over an hour to get our food. There were 9 of us. Server brought our food out plate by plate instead of all at once. Not worth the price or time.
We had a large party. They were very accommodating. Few little hiccups (appetizer forgotten but comped). Overall great. Food very good. Kid friendly. Staff very helpful. Will definitely be back!
Great pizza/Italian Place. Very nice they take reservations. Good service and ambiance - great place for large groups.
As usual the food was fabulous, it was an early lunch and enjoyed that it wasn’t very crowded at that time. Of course it filled up but it did not impair our service. Great place for lunch and dinner.
We went to Cugino’s last week and had a great dinner! Started with the mussels and calamari, which were delicious. I had the homemade pappardelle with bolognese sauce and my husband had eggplant parmesan - we both really liked our dishes. Girls had pizza which was very good. Waitress was attentive, friendly and knowledgeable. Overall great food and dining’s experience!
Absolutely amazing pizzas. Good wine list. Friendly staff.
My boyfriend and I were in Steamboat for vacation. Our dinner at Cugino’s was our last night there. The server was so great. Friendly and helpful. The focaccia bread he brought out before the meal was AMAZING!!! I’ll be dreaming of that bread for a long time. Our pastas were so tasty and well presented. We left with smiles and full bellies. I would recommend Cugino’s to anyone. If not for living in Florida I’d go there quite often.
It’s nice to have a consistently good Italian restaurant in Steamboat
The service was friendly, but they seemed overwhelmed and forgot a few items of our order. They were also out of servers food items including French fries.
The owner is so nice!
