I had been wanting to try Cuba Libre for a while, so I was excited to try their Restaurant Week specials. Overall, the service was friendly but somewhat inattentive. The highlights of our meal were the albondigas camaguey (perfect meatballs in a delicious sauce) and the pescado de oriente (Delicious fish. Order sans the fried rice, which was extremely salty and nothing special. I would definitely request a different side). The vaca frita was also tasty. I probably wouldn't order the pulpo con berenjenas (grilled, marinated baby octopus)again. They were fine, but nothing special. The desserts (flan and tres leches) were quite good. Overall, a good meal, but I wasn't blown away.
We went for Restaurant Week - the appetizers were outstanding, the entrees were good but not memorable and the desserts (served small portions of two desserts) were also exceptional. When we go back, we'll make a meal of the appetizers. Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive.
Food was mediocre for the price charged.
I felt like I was transported to a street in Havana... Loved the decor and the food was great too! Good options for vegetarians also...
The atmoshpere and service was great but the prices and food were terrible.
Loved the food, service, and decor! If it's still on the menu, you have to try the pork stuffed squid! I feel like so many city/urban restaurants claim or think they are such a delight to dine at when they are not. Cuba Libre DC is.
Excellent drink menu and high-end rum selections. Interesting food menu. New waiter made some mistakes, but can't fault him for that. Restaurant was extremely loud. Couldn't hear each other, even when yelling. The customers were competing with the too-loud music.
Pedestrian food and indifferent service. Seems geared toward tourists and groups celebrating after work. Nothing here is remotely Cuban in taste or execution.
Great food but air-conditioning wasn't working and it was hotter than ....
The manager apologized but offered nothing to "compensate" us for the EXTREME heat inside. He finally reluctantly offered to comp a round of drinks.
Would go back though as the food and service were good!
Reliably good food. The restaurant's air conditioning leaves a lot to be desired, so don't go when it's super hot outside.
Had a fabulous dinner at Cuba Libre. Drinks, appetizers, soup, entrees were all wonderful. Service was excellent. The restaurant was busy but we were not rushed. Only glitch was the air conditioner stopped working and it was warmer inside than outside. Still had a great time and want to return the next time I am in DC.
The Mojitos were great but we were very dissapointed in the food selection on menu... i love latin food and have visited many Latin countries as well as dined at local Latin eateries in DC. My guests and I were all very dissapointed in the food selection, i ordered the Arroz con Pollo a traditional Latin dish, it was too salty and i couldnt figure out why it came with a whole boiled egg on top. We had a late reservation so opted to stay for the night club, that was a bad idea. Not sure if the AC was broken but the club was very very hot and the floor was soaked, i couldn't figure out if it was from people sweating or from people spilling drinks from bumping into each other because it was so crowded. Not a good ladies night out!
The music was not so great. I expected more salsa but instead of that it was a whole bunch of Bachata which is not my favourite. From the name of the restaurant and from the information in its website I really expected more Cuban music.
I had a really bad experience when I called to get a reservation. Everytime different employee gave a hard time. I didn't cancel my reservation because was my husband birthday and all his friend already had a plan to come to celebrate with us. You should be more flexible with that. They told me that night the restaurant had an event and it wasen't busy. I don't recommend to anyone to celebrate any special occasion. One of the VIP body guards was very mean to one of my friend because the AC wasn't working and he was trying to go to the fan in that section and didn't let him go ( VIP section it was almost empty). That night the restaurant had only 3 fans running. I'm very disapointed with the service.
A bit loud but vibrant. My salad was exceedingly over dressed but the rest of the meal was solidly good.
Food was very good, and the ambience was excellent. Unfortunately we got a server that wasn't very helpful. She took a long time to take our order, forgot our drinks and didn't suggested any deserts presenting the check as soon as we finish the main course. We spoke with the manager and he was very understanding and apologized for the situation. Too bad about the service. Overall you will get the latin flavor of cuban cuisine.
The reviews for this restaurant, as well as, recommendations from friends lead to expectations that were not met. The rib starter was excellent the main courses were completely underwhelming. My wife, however, enjoyed her food and the experience and said she would definitely be returning.
We had a 'difficult' family member and the staff handled him wonderfully while we were all holding our heads in our hands. Definitely a great place for large groups and basically anytime!
Unique dishes, good service, and a good crowd. Looking froward to going back.
The drinks were great, the music fun, and the food beyond expectations. The flavors popped with more spice and creativeness than some of the best Cuban restaurants we have enjoyed in Little Havana in Miami. Can't wait to go back.
Much too noisy; couldn't hear conversation over the background music; food was fair
very loud, music pounding and loud and the food was awful.
The food was awesome! My husband and I came here to celebrate our anniversary and ordered the chef's tasting menu. It was fantastic! The caipirina's were also delicious.
Waiter was very slow and inattentive when most of the tables were still unoccupied. Sitting by the window under the air conditioning vents was so drafty I felt like I was sailing on the Bay. Chorizo omelet was almost tasteless and the grilled shrimp were so tough I had to cut them off the skewer with a knife. On the other hand, my friend has eaten there several times and she really enjoyed her food.
The service was great- our waitress was very attentive. Pretty loud, which is fine if that's what you're looking for. Food was ok, but not great. Not evenly warm and some things seemed to be prepared well ahead of time. E.g. The tasted plantains tasted stale. Prices seemed a little high for the quality of food and atmosphere.
Drinks were very good however. Seems like a good bar/snack place but probably won't be back for dinner.
I do appreciate the fact they were able to take a last minute reservation.
Went for brunch and it was great. Our server was outstanding, and made many good recommendations. Would recommend to others.
First time dining here. We love Cuban food from visits to South Florida so were excited to try Cuba Libre. Our server was excellent but the food was not. Appetizers were palatable but the entrees (lechon, arroz con pollo and the grilled meats for two) were very ordinary and much of the food went uneaten. Desserts (tres leches, banana bread pudding) were awful. The mojitos were highly recommended but were like an over sweetened fruit soda more than the minty, citrusy balanced cocktail they should be. All of this and a $300 tab. Stay away--we won't be going back.
My husband and I went to Cuba Libre for Dinner on Friday. We thought the food was so expensive. My husband ordered food from their special menu which was $39. I ordered Paella de Mariscos for $29 which was very small portion. My dish had everything that described: 2 shrimps, hardly any meat for clams and mussels in the shells, and a small piece of Mahi-Mahi in the middle. It is not worth a $29 dish and have had better at other places and less expensive. In addition, Paella is a dish for 2 people, but not at Cuba Libre.
Had a wonderful lunch, outstanding salad. Looking forward to returning soon.
I like this place. This time the bread was a bit old as the plantains. The rest was great.
Great ambiance. Great drinks. Food was not great.
I've been to Cuba Libre for drinks before, and the drinks were again the star during this dining excursion. The food was enjoyable - loved the seafood soup, and the "pudin" dessert was fantastic - and our waiter was great. He gave us spot on recommendations and was very friendly. However, he wasn't always around, took a while to refill water glasses, and the runners kept trying to deliver us food that wasn't ours - happened three times. There seems to be something of a flaw in the order-delivery system. That said, my friend and I felt relaxed and were not rushed, even though it was a busy Saturday night, and we really enjoyed our experience. I'll definitely go back, although think that the bar/small plates approach may be the one I'll take.
Went there for my birthday and was just not all that impressed. The service was sluggish, and our waited seemed to be annoyed by our presence. The food was fine, but average. Nothing to get excited about. Lastly, note that the Valet is NOT a good experience. It took us 20 minutes to get our car back.
We had a very good meal and our server was very attentive to our show time at Verizon center.
however, when I came to retrieve my car I waited almost 30 minutes.
When I asked the Maitre'd to assist me in getting more prompt servuice he said that hhe restaurant was not responsible for anything to do with the parking; they were an independent contractor. That may be the business arrangement but as a diner at oyor restaut=rabt, I would have expected better service. Not a positive customer experience.
We had visited Cuba Libre last year and thought the food was phenomenal. Drinks were a little watery but the food was excellent. This year, we decided to come back and the food was the exact opposite. We ordered the same dish and I could have made a better steak and piece of chicken myself at home. Everything was bland, dry, and overcooked.
Our entire experience at Cuba Libre was incredible! It was my wife and my anniversary and I had flowers ordered and delivered to the restaurant in advance of our arrival. When we got there, everyone that greeted us told us "happy anniversary" and gave us very special treatment.
The food was outstanding. All portions sizes were PERFECT and everything we ate was bursting with flavor. The prices were very reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food. You have GOT to try the mojitos - they are excellent!
Finally, (last but not least) Anastasia was our server and she was AWESOME! Very friendly, knowledgeable and personable. I have not received better service that I received here.
You've got to try out Cuba Libre!
Great bar, inside look. Appetizers were good, main dishes fiar. Nothing great on the food side.
The food was great and the ambiance was really nice.
Very fine quality food in nice decor without too much noise. Two things that could be improved were that it took a long time to be seated (with reservations) and the service is very slow and somewhat inattentive. Not a cheap meal at over $60 per person with one drink and a pitcher of Sangria for 6.
I absolutely do not recommed this restaurant. We made a reservation through opentable and arrived about 5 minutes early. The restaurant was busy but not full. We waited for 25 minutes at the bar - and were lucky to even be acknowledged by the bartenders. After 25 minutes we reminded the hostess that we were there. She said she couldn't seat us without "clearance from her manager." After we were seated, the service was slow. We never received our bread. When the food finally arrived, one of the orders was wrong. The guy who brought the food argued with us about this and we had to actually take the sandwich apart to prove to him that the order was incorrect. The food was at best mediocre.
