Cress on Oak Creek at L'Auberge de Sedona Ratings and Reviews
From Jacquelynn: The dinner started off fantastic! We each did the tasting menu without dessert and each ordered different things. The amuse Bouche was phenomenal, the starters (two each) were all incredible - he had the foie gras (first time I’ve ever liked foie gras) and the pork belly (good but my least fav of the 4). My corvina was amazing and my squash soup was good but maybe a bit too filling. His entree was coq au vin, and it was good but not great. I didn’t love the veggies (carrots tasted a bit strange in terms of flavor profile). My filet was just ok. It was more medium rare than medium (as I’d ordered) and the blue cheese sauce was too overpowering. It was incorporated into the potato purée turning it very salty. I was also quite full from the starters so I didn’t eat more than two bites before passing it to my dining companion who finished it. We both agreed it wasn’t the best filet we’d ever had but he liked it better than I did. We opted out of dessert but there was a lovely little chocolate bite to end the meal. Service was great and lead waiter was very informative on food and wine pairings.
From jason: service standards were about as good as you can get; everyone knew their role and operated as a high-performing team. They made us feel truly special. Bravo! Loved the creative “dessert-like” foie gras: all flavors worked perfectly. Great wine selections (recommended from our server). I also enjoyed the pork belly second course. Entrees were good, but not as good as I had hoped, and as compared to the first two courses. Loved the atmosphere in the restaurant. Wall sconces and artwork were cool.
My wife and I dinned here last year and it was just as fabulous this year. Having Joel as our waiter ( the title doesn’t do him justice) brought the experience to a whole new level. I’m having trouble coming up with the words to describe how he enhanced the dinner, Joel was very personable he described the menu beautifully and made wonder wine pairing for our selections. He was very attentive to us but never to the point of intruding in fact he was so wonderful to talk to I wish we had more time to converse. Joel also had a wonder support staff that complemented his table side manners. They all worked together seamlessly, just a fabulous dinner experience.
We love Auberge. Love it. We’ve eaten there a lot over the years. That said, this evening’s three course dinner was a mixed bag. The seared fois gras was spectacularly amazing, but the pork belly was poorly seasoned and undercooked and the venison was not seasoned to any detectable extent and over cooked quite a bit v the medium rare that I had ordered. Serving sizes on the second and third courses were unusually — and ridiculously — small, given the tab.
We’ve eaten at Auberge a lot over the years and this was the first time we’ve seen the kitchen fall down on their three course dinner offering, which usually is — and should always be — their very best effort.
It was a wonderful evening for many other reasons. Service was both impeccable and very friendly. We left her a very strong tip that reflected her commitment and artistry as a server but not the kitchen’s execution. For ambience, Auberge is tops tops tops.
We were really looking forward to dining at Cress on Oak Creek and made a reservation for 7:30 p.m. We arrived early, checked in with the hostess and sat at the bar to have a drink. The bartender was very pleasant and professional. They weren't very busy, therefore, the hostess offered to sit us at the table around 7 p.m. We sat down and met the waiter, who noted he worked with a team and we would be meeting/served by different members of the team. The waiter explained the menu and left us to decide on wine/dinner. We reviewed the food menu and the wine menu. After a few minutes, we had decided to order a bottle of Arizona wine. We waited, and waited and waited for someone to come by and take our drink order, but after about 15 minutes just sitting there, we decided to leave. I don't think we were even served water at that point. We stood up to leave and it was then that the waiter approached us again. I said we were leaving because he was apparently too busy for us and he said that his "recovery would be impeccable". The manager followed us outside and asked us to return, but it was too late. We ended up having a fabulous dinner at Mariposa, which was not by a creek, but none-the- less a beautiful venue.
My wife and I were on vacation in Sedona. I planned to dine at Cress on Oak Creek as their menu showed that the chef desires to show real culinary skills. Our server Kody is amazing, well informed, passionate about the restaurant's cuisine and knows the ingredients in each dish. That's unusual for a server. His descriptions were spot on. The sommelier (Oops I forgot his name) is a world of knowledge about beer, wine and liqueurs. We talked for some time about Port, Madeira and a local kolsch I was drinking. It is rare for me to eat at any restaurant and be able to discuss the character of beer and wine since any discussion takes knowledge, a good pallette and passion. All of these traits are evident with Kody and the sommelier. What a pleasure.
My wife and I chose the 3 course tasting menu. Each dish was uniquely garnished, the sauces were very interesting, the preparations were sound. I particularly liked the fois gras appetizer and the venison entree with a rich mole sauce. The sweetbreads were a nice appetizer as well with a crispy exterior and lovely sauce. I made a small comment about the sweetbreads to Kody and he asked if I wanted to try something else. I said yes because I was enjoying the culinary journey and we had time. Kody brought a interesting Morrocan spiced squash soup garnished with crab. I loved it. Sadly, we didn't have room for dessert. I did have room for a local IPA which was very good. Both local beers were noteworthy. My wife and I left very happy and I would return again the next time I'm in Sedona.
We had a wonderful New Years Eve dinner. Even though the restaurant was busy we had excellent service. Although the first course arrived before we had finished our cocktails. The pacing for the rest of the food was fine. The food was delicious and presented in a lovely way.
Our waiter was very helpful and knowledgeable about the food preparation and the wine.
The perfect dining experience for an intimate and laid-back New Year's Eve. My husband and I felt relaxed and comfortable which we don't often do in more high-end restaurants. Delicious menu crafted for the holiday. Everything was creative and presented beautifully. Our waiter was fantastic, helping us navigate the menu and cocktail list - so knowledgeable and great recommendations. Well worth the price tag! We can't wait for our next meal there!
We took our son and fiancee who were visiting from New York City. We live in San Francisco and this was our first visit to Sedona. We wanted food the equal of NY or SF quality and we were not disappointed. All 3 courses were excellent. I love good seared foie gras and theirs was delicious. The beef and the seafood (Soft shell crab with scallops) were great. Wouldn't hesitate to return.
A lovely dining experience to get away from the tourist bustle. The food is unique and of course has a French flair with rich sauces and game dishes. You will not go home hungry. The cocktails are fabulous and the wine list is extraordinary, but it is all outdone by the incredible dishes and the effort put in by the staff. This is a high end restaurant and resort with a price tag to match so be warned. Expect to spend several hours savoring your dinner. If you were wondering, you will look out of place in your shorts, flip flops or flannel shirts and you will enjoy the ambiance with a more civilized attire. We love Cress on Oak Creek and will definitely be going back.
Wonderful night at Cress. Arrived early to enjoy cocktails in the intimate and popular bar. This must be spectacular in the spring/summer when the trees along the river are leafed out. Staff were unfailingly polite, welcoming and professional without any pretension. All of the choices we made on the 3-course menu (passed on dessert) were above expectations with presentation, blending of flavors, and portion size (unlike some prix fixe or chefs tasing menus, we did not leave hungry. Ambiance was pleasant even as the dining room filled but we especially enjoyed a table next to casement windows that opened to the sounds of the creek below. Would strongly consider returning if we visit Sedona in the future.
Excellent in all aspects! We went for Christmas Eve and not aware that we would be limited to their 4 course meal only so the price and no other choice was a bit of a shock since we were not informed that it would only be the one choice. Would have appreciated advance notice of price $135 per person and that we would not have any other choices.
This is the first time at this restaurant and it did not disappoint. While it was too cold to sit outside they had very nice views from the inside tables. We did enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail outside overlooking the River. Jessica the bartender made a wonderful Rim Rock cocktail. Tim our waiter was very helpful and attentive. The food was great we tried the tasting menu which was more than plenty. Will be back in the summer so we can sit right off the River.
Let me start with the positives... the service was outstanding. The patio looked amazing, but unfortunately we were not able to enjoy it due to the weather. Now for the rest... the food was adequate at best. This place was way over priced. $295 for a dinner of two with two drinks per person... not even close to worth it. Go to Elote if you want a fantastic dinner in Sedona.
A mixed bag. Two fish dishes (Mediterranean Sea bass and halibut) were both very good. Fois gras and seeetbreads poor: one stringy the other overcooked and dry as dust, both in a cloyingly sweet preparation. Filet was pedestrian and cold and nowhere near what one might get at a top end steakhouse. Overall the imagination is lacking (especially given the price) and the execution with few exceptions is poor. On the plus side...nice atmosphere and good service.
Loved this place! A bit cold out, so the creek side tables weren’t being serviced, but available to sit at with drinks. Great setting, very relaxing. For dinner, we had a window seat and chose the 4 coarse meal; all items were excellent. French cuisine, so small portions but everything was interesting and delicious! Waiter Steve (I believe) has been there for 17 years and was knowledgeable and personable. Quite pricey, but worth it if you’re willing to spend it. Highly recommend.
We had a wonderful date night at Cress. Each of us loved all four courses. The food was creative and interesting, and delicious! The presentations were spectacular. The service was incomparable. The waiter gave excellent descriptions of the menu, great advice on selections of both food and wine, and made our meal perfect. The setting is also beautiful - we were seated right alongside the creek, listening to the water - it was a lovely evening.
