Cowell & Hubbard Ratings and Reviews
I appreciated the vegan options, so much! It was wonderful to be able to get dessert...as someone who cannot eat dairy I usually have zero options. The vegan ice cream sandwich was so fantastic! Everyone at the table had to taste it, and fussed over how good it was. Our service was great: friendly, well timed, efficient but not rushed.
This was one of our best visits to C&H. Our server, Philip, was a big reason for this. His recommendations (wine, goat cheese gnudi app, beet salad special) were spot on. Cocktails are correctly made and the specials are imaginative. The only negative was a noticeable slow down in service as the restaurant became busy. We waited a long time for coffee, dessert, and the check.
Food was very good, but final prep chef, out on the public side of kitchen was terrible. Wiping his nose with his hand and fingers and using a cell phone and continuing on to garnish or rearrange salad is disgusting. Noticed while waiting for check.Talked to manager. Not good protcol to just say I'll talk to him and give us no good reason to return to this establishment. I worked for Stouffer Restaurant Corp office back in the day. Problem would have never been have been handled this way. Sign of the times? I hope not.
We visited this restaurant following the wonderful "Straight No Chaser" show. When I made reservations we had the vault room, when we checked in at 5, that was not gonna happen, even though I complained. Two of us had the cod that we both thought was quite bland, two enjoyed the salmon, spaghetti squash was good, Playhouse Burger was fine. The escargots I would not order again, it was kind of in a soup. Should have read the description better before ordering it. The bread seems to be all hard crust, with little actual bread.
The potato soup was delicious. This was followed by spectacular salads - the squash and the beet were each amazing! The pomegranate reduction and avocado dabs on the beet salad also containing greens and quinoa made it even more interesting. There was pesto, pine nuts and feta (I think) on the squash salad which in addition to greens had shaved zucchini, yellow squash and butternut squash. We split a quinoa crusted trout. It was a truly wonderful meal.
I have gone to this restaurant many times over the past several years, and have always found it to be a great pick for before the theater in nearby Playhouse Square. Food is very good, service is excellent and friendly and the ambiance just right. I have never had a bad experience there.
Perfect spot for before or after show at Playhouse Theatre. Husband had bone marrow appetizer, mushroom soup & Lamb entree which he thought were all excellent. I had the squash salad, which was delicious, & the salmon entree. Have eaten here several times before a show & take advantage of buying discounted gift certificates from Cleveland Independents, and have always been impressed with our meals.
Our group has not been to Cowell and Hubbard for about a year - we typically like to have dinner before a show. We have stayed away because the menu at that time did not appeal to our diverse group of a vegan and three flexitarians! But the current menu offered much to please all of us! I especially enjoyed the carrot ginger soup and the spring rolls. Our vegan friend gave the spaghetti squash very good reviews. The brussel sprout salad was a meal in itself and very tasty! And the apple cheesecake was very good and easy to share. Our server Casey was very knowledgeable about the menu and made some good suggestions. He was very attentive, prompt, and sensitive to our curtain time. We will be back!
We enjoyed our evening before the musical "On Your Feet". Service was very friendly, couldn't have been more helpful. Food was delicious and reasonable. Loved our window seat, watching the crowd and lights of Playhouse Square. I highly recommend eating at Cowell & Hubbard but was glad we had reservations which were very easy to make on the internet. Thank you also to the many chefs!!!
This place has really good potential, but my husband and I had a subpar meal. His lamb was very tough to chew and had strings of tendon or something running through it. My lamb was not Morrocan spiced as it should have been, but it was very salty. Plus everything was served in a bowl with broth so the rice ended up being one soggy mess. The presentation on top was a large portion of cilantro (with all the hard stems) mixed in with glops of feta cheese that were mashed into the cilantro sort of. I managed to eat some of the lamb but my husband sent his back. Lamb should not be chewy! Prices were good and not too out of this world, but the recipes and presentation need to be tweaked some. Both the dishes needed some help in the overall taste.
Our server was very much in tune to our need to get through dinner and arrive in time for the theater. Cafeteria like seating, plain walls, didn't take much to decorate this place - nothing special. Very very noisy, but luckily we were in one of the previous vaulted rooms, therefore we could carry on a conversation. Will probably not return.
Very disappointed with the quality of the food. Everything was ok, nothing terrible, but I could have gone anywhere for food that was just ok. We ate here about two years back and the food was excellent, I was really excited to go back as I was expecting the food to be as good as I remembered. I can honestly say I probably won't be back as there are so many other great options to chose from in the area.
This is a nice restaurant very close to playhouse square. They make sure you are done in time for your show at the theaters!! The food is all very well prepared and delicious. I had the trout and my wife had the pasta and squash dish. All was very fresh. The Apple walnut ice cream for desert was delicious too! I would recommend this restaurant to everyone!
My wife and I had s very nice evening. However, my steak was cooked to perfection while my wife’s salmon was warm on the outside and cold and pink inside. She ordered it medium well. It was as if it came out of the freezer and was microwaved. She didn’t want to send it back so she just suffered through it.
Our desserts in the other hand were fantastic.
Disappointed in their gluten free options. When I had researched this restaurant, they were given good reviews on gluten free options. When we were there, they had no gluten free pasta, pizza crust, and many of the dinner options contained gluten. Only positive is they served gluten free bread.
my husband and I went for dinner before an outing at Playhouse Square. very nice meal and service. We arrived at 5pm on a Saturday....not too busy....they wanted to sit us next to a lone gentleman...but I asked for a space a lil more private....took us down the hall to a nice room that could sit maybe 30 or so....my husband had the strip steak and I had the beef shoulder. very good meals. When we left, we saw how busy and noisy the main dining area was...very glad we sat back in the more private area where we could relax and enjoy ourselves.
